This informal survey aims to gather statistics on the length and completion status readers on AO3 prefer for fanfic. The survey is not aff
I put together a relatively short survey (about two dozen questions, mostly multiple choice, all optional) to get some data on what fic lengths and completion statuses readers on AO3 prefer or avoid. If I get enough answers to have a good sample size, it should give us some insight into how people search and read on the archive.
If you find this interesting, feel free to share it with AO3 users elsewhere or post it to other platforms. I'd like to get a good crossection of readers that isn't biased by platform, if at all possible.
The survey is just for fun/curiosity, and isn't associated with any university, company, or other entity. It's just me asking you this stuff here :)
I'm not putting a deadline on this, I'll just let it run until I've got some good numbers, but whenever I do have enough I'll post the results here. You can track this post to watch for that update.
i've recently noticed a significant uptick in fics on ao3 tagged with 'not made with AI' or 'fuck AI' or similar and i gotta say it is giving me a sour taste in my mouth
like yes obviously fuck AI obviously do not profane the act of creation by asking a water guzzling hallucinatory robot trained on countless stolen artworks to do the thinking for you
but if we are tagging for 'not made with AI' then i very much worry that there is going to be a flip in perspective somewhere on the future that anything not tagged this way is made with AI... a sort of normalization of "well everyone uses it, unless you call out that you don't, we'll just assume that you did" and i gotta be real that is not a timeline i want any part of
Even in a post-capitalist, post-consumerist world, you still need to produce goods, as a result of this, you need factories because it is more effective to have a few people making a lot of clothes in a factory than every woman being forced to sit down and spin wool all day.
The issue with factories is poor wages, unsafe working conditions and environmental impact, all of which can be fixed through things like regulatory bodies and unions, the issue is not the fact that goods are no longer all made at home
So many political posts I hate boil down to "I don't want to organize and work with people I hate and fight for small, incremental victories, I just want to start a revolution where everyone magically becomes an automaton who acts exactly the way I think they should act"
Like damn man, I want that too. Unfortunately I live in reality though so we're stuck with the first thing.
"Modern movements are too fractured, too aimless, with too much infighting and corruption among the leadership. What we need is a revolution, which famously never have any issues with those things" okay then. Good luck I guess
This whole line of thinking comes down to "the current systems and leadership are bad. What we need is a fresh start with only people who are good, and then all the systems will be good". Which is simply not how anything has ever worked!
"We don't have enough people, funding, and power to bring about changes through elections! We have to do an armed revolution instead which thankfully doesn't require people, funding, or power to pull off."
I fucking hate it here
For those of you with android devices, you can use the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) standalone app control program to get rid of all the bloatware, data mining, and AI crap - no coding needed!
save
There are also Android-based alternatives like GrapheneOS and LineageOS, which are pretty easy to install. These are unfortunately available for a more limited range of devices (Graphene is ironically Pixel only, while Lineage supports more), but it's very worth checking out whether one of them might work for your phone.
GrapheneOS is a security and privacy focused mobile OS with Android app compatibility.
LineageOS Android Distribution
Typing this from Graphene now, in fact. But, both of those take the Android Open Source Project, without all the bloatware--and largely de-Google the whole thing. They give you much more control over privacy and what the apps you choose to install can do and access on your phone.
I know Graphene sandboxes everything, including the optionally installed Google Play Services which a lot of apps unfortunately require to run. (Lineage uses an alternative to Play Services instead.) So, you can install what would normally be unacceptably intrusive apps and just lock them away from pulling any funny shit with your data, or phoning home. Including the couple of Google things I do still keep around.
I also prefer running much more transparent, privacy-respecting open source apps where possible. Besides the transparency, I'd rather avoid the shitty tech corps entirely where I can. There are pretty good alternatives available for a lot of the usual suspects.
AlternativeTo lets you find apps and software for Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, iPad, Android, Android Tablets, Web Apps, Online, Windows Tab

to anyone in the areas impacted by the wildfire smoke, my #1 biggest piece of advice as someone whos been dealing with wildfire smoke in the NW united states for years, is build yourself a Corsi-Rosenthal Cube
they perform as well as expensive HEPA air cleaners, and are comparatively VERY inexpensive. all you need is a box fan, 4 air filters, a piece of cardboard, and some duct tape!!!!
i think it took us maybe a half hour to put ours together, if that, and we replace the filters every 3 months. it's really made a HUGE difference, both when the air quality is bad, but also with our allergies
Saw these easy to read instructions on Twitter. Stay safe 💚
Great time to start pricing this out by the way, fire season starts… on the summer solstice this year, that’s fun. Signs point to it being a doozy.
nothing in the world is mundane someone spent years of their life studying and thinking about culverts and building upon the countless work of others and our historical collected knowledge of fluid dynamics and construction materials just so that your shit doesn't get flooded all the time and you dont even think about it! have you ever considered the culvert really? and its like. fucking everything is like this
in regard to my last reblog, i think people do not understand just how much gets outsourced when you're rich. im a domestic worker who has worked in the homes of the wealthy for about 10 years now, and i can tell you: they dont do chores. they dont cook. they dont mow their lawn. they dont walk their dogs.
the "middle-classification" of professional athletes is something thats really bothered me in hockey rpf for a while and now its in heated rivalry too. let me give you some examples of how outsourced their domestic lives are. they have:
professional chefs who come to their house and meal prep all their meals (except maybe breakfast) for the entire week. they leave instruction on how to heat them back up. shane and ilya would also have meals at the arena prepped by professional chefs and dietitians who formulate their diets based on their needs and preference
household managers who handle basically everything lmao: they hire other domestic workers, they put out holiday decorations, they do all daily chores like dishes/sweeping/cleaning the kitchen/etc, they organize the house, they do all the family's laundry (including changing sheets 2-3 times a week), they go through the pantry and get rid of expired foods.... like everything that needs to done around the house, the HM will do
a dog walker who takes the dog out several times a day (2-4 times typically) for 30 min to 1 hour long walks
housekeepers who come once a week or once every other week to deep clean the entire place
nannies, sometimes one sometimes two depending on how often the parents want to/are able to be in charge of sole childcare without help (they also have night nannies or night nurses during postpartum so they dont have to get up all the time, and postpartum doulas)
landscapers who take care of all outdoor plant needs
im probably forgetting some, but the perk of being rich is that you dont have to do anything around your house. this is all like.... extremely normal for rich people!
now single guys like ilya or shane might not have a house manager come every single day, but they definitely have one. ilya might like walking his dog, but only when its convenient for him. otherwise the dog walker is there at 8:00, 3:00 and 7:00 to take her out.
i think there could be some really fascinating things to do in fic about guys who are soo private but also there are people in and out of their house all the time. people who are financially "beneath" them and people who rely on staying on ilya and shane's good sides for their financial security. and what that means for shane and ilya's characterization! but that would mean people have to engage with professional athletes being rich and snobby and idk if people are ready for that yet
This is all very correct and I do also like to think about how Shane and Ilya would need to hide their secret relationship from their housekeepers. From here you can cook up a scenario where Ilya’s housekeeper has known about his secret relationship the whole time, but that feels like well-trod territory.
I like to imagine that Shane was insanely ruthless and paranoid about NDAs. Actually, probably all rich people make their housekeepers sign an NDA? So maybe that’s not that weird. But he’s doing it for everyone who steps foot inside that house. (Except his teammates. He thought about it, but ultimately decided it would be too suspicious.) The plumber. The person who does absolutely nothing but walk his pre-prepared meals to the refrigerator and leave. The landscapers who actually never come inside the house. He tried to give one to the postman but apparently that’s illegal. Makes his dentist sign one even though they’re already covered by whatever is the Canadian version of HIPPA. Attorney/client privilege is a thing, sure, but the first person who signed the NDA is the lawyer who wrote the generic NDA template. You know, just in case.
Eventually the rumor that gets around about Shane is that he makes you sign an NDA after so much as exchanging a handshake and no one really knows why but assumes it’s because of something really bad.
Meanwhile, perhaps Ilya hires an Instagram influencer private chef who does and films all of his meal prep at Ilya's house. (Shout out to justahumblecook, one of my favorite vibes watches, sorry your clients are white boomers who make you cook the same six things over and over again.)
Also, as an aside, the single most unrealistic thing that happens in The Long Game is that Hayden needs Shane to babysit because that family would have a nanny. Oh, it’s the nanny’s day off? I don’t know, dude, they are wealthy and they have four kids and Hayden travels like nine months a year, I think they have seven-day-a-week nanny coverage.
I think what may be so jarring about the big universe reset (other than the tragedy for our main characters ofc) is that it was presented as good and necessary so that humans could have free will outside the influence of God's plans. But I can't think of ANYTHING in the show up until that scene which supported the idea that they didn't already HAVE free will??
The whole first season was about humans (and an angel and a demon) choosing not to play along with "God's ineffable plan" by stopping the apocalypse, exerting their free will. Yeah there's a wink in there that maybe that was her plan all along, but her absence & silence played a big role in the story that suggested she's been leaving it up to the humans for a while now and just observing (if she's still there at all). And then heaven and hell were at loose ends, sort of settled on continuing to follow the same old script because that's what they've always done. But that also seemed like a choice, not fate.
If the series up until then had been about humans struggling to fight fate/God's plan for them and then always ultimately succumbing to it, never really being their own people because they were trudging along the path laid out for them from the start, basically puppets… Sure that might be an appropriate solution. But it wasn't? All the humans needed was for heaven and hell to stop meddling and trying to end the world.
Which our protagonists agreed with. Right up until God gave them a choice and they decided to end the world. What? Yeah sure there's a new world now, but it's not like there's a complete absence of God's influence in that one either. Or else how would "Anthony Crowley" and "Asa Fell" have come to exist?
I've said it before and I'll say it again. We need a "This is absolutely NOT mature content" feedback button on posts. You can report a post as missing a community label. We should also be able to report posts as having a comminity label when they dont fucking need one.
shane hollander would hate being a gay icon actually
mmmmm yeah. just another element of tokenization to stack on top. now he's gotta be Palatable Gay. now he's gotta be Corporate Gay. now he's gotta be sexless, above all blame & reproach. pulling double model minority duty. he's gotta work even harder to ignore it every time he gets a "pretty boy" or a "twinkle toes" on the ice or in the locker room because it's said in a different tone of voice, now. they really mean it, now, in an ugly way that makes him feel kind of sick if he thinks about it too hard. overnight he becomes hockey's token twink and he's gotta live every day knowing that the whole hockey internet sphere thinks (knows) he's a bottom. that everybody thinks (knows) he's less of a man. in some ways he's not even really a man at all anymore in the eyes of the public. special edition Pride Tape, by Shane Hollander. every june billboards up everywhere with some bullshit tagline like I'm true to myself, in #mycalvins. featuring Shane Hollander. is reebok an ally? is rolex his friend? does anything he's doing matter at all to queer youth? or are they just saying that to try and make him feel better? is he making a difference? should he actually be trying to make a difference? was it worth it? will it ever get easier? is it ever going to be worth it? is it too late to take it back? is it too late to hide again, to be perfect again, to give perfect polite press-ready answers in perfect polite fucking french and keep this for himself, just this one fucking thing, all to himself? because every day it skins him raw. every day he exhausts himself by worrying about optics. Gatorade's Pride Month campaign featuring Shane Hollander and the ad is just another faceless man pouring Gatorade into Shane's mouth because that's what he does now. it's all tongue-in-cheek now. i'm gay, remember? don't forget. every four weeks a mic'ed up scandal where another player calls him a slur and it goes mega viral and shane has to keep his head down and say "yeah i didn't really think about it much at the time it's all good" and pretend it doesn't kill him to know just how personal and how deep their hatred is. but he can't get mad. he can't throw gloves. he can't get violent. he can't get revenge. because he's a good boy, he's shane fucking hollander and he never fights. he just shows up and plays his hockey and smiles for the cameras and nothing ever gets to him and nothing ever throws him off his game. a million jokes about stick handling. a million jokes about stooping at center ice for face off. a million jokes about spitting and stretching and simply just sitting there on the bench doing nothing at all. it's never forgotten. it's never switched off. and he never asked for any of this at all. all he did was fall in love. and now it's a job. now it's a duty. now it's a marketing shtick. now it's a mantle around his shoulders and a millstone around his neck and it exhausts him. it's always been exhausting to just be himself but now it's even worse. and he never wanted to make a difference anyway, he just wanted to play hockey. homoerotic Speedo commercials playing on big screens at malls. starring Shane Hollander. and every night he goes home to his husband and he hates himself for feeling like maybe it wasn't worth it. if he could've kept this thing for himself, maybe he would've. but he knows it would've killed him, would've made him miserable for the rest of his life, to hide and to lie. and he knows this was always one game he was never going to win. NHL's pride night exclusive rink-side interview. starring Shane Hollander. what's it like being out? what's it like being an openly gay player? it's awesome. it's great. he doesn't really think about it too much. he's just here to play hockey.
