ISSA LAST NAME REVEAL???????????
Trevor Noah interviewing Judith “Badass” Heumann
x
I’m glad so many people have discovered Judith “Judy” Heumann through this silly little gif set. I am sorry to say she has died at the age of 75. She was known as the mother of disability rights. In 1970 she sued the Board of Education to become a licensed teacher and she won. In 1977 she was one of the organizers of the 504 Sit-in, a 24 day protest for disability rights. You can learn more about her story from her book Being Heumann, the picture book Fighting for YES! or the documentary Crip Camp.
Judy Heumann believed in the inherent value of each disabled individual and would never back down on what she thought was right. Her friends and fellow activists remember her as a strong leader.

May her memory be for a blessing.
Whenever people complain about how dating bi men is hard bc they got twice as many hoes like yall not the ones suffering. He is the one suffering. Do u know how much of a distraction it is to have hoes coming at you in all shapes and genders and orientations all the pronouns and things ???? Like sit back and think about it. All that bussy titty ass pussy balls cum and squirting closing in on you from every angle it will lead a young man astray if he’s not careful. I thank god every day I just got men to be crazy about bc if I had to pay attention to the seductions of women too I’d be no call no show jobless out on the street begging n sucking dick for a mcchicken a lot of people don’t understand the bisexual to hobosexual pipeline is real and we need to raise awareness. I care do you? Show some compassion

almost empty journal that shane started once as a mindfulness practice but then got too scared to continue because it was churning up some stuff he’d rather not think about
i would love to hear more of your thoughts on why ilya’s message to shane in the plane scene should have been a suicide note in TLG if you’re in the mood to share!
i kind of have a conspiracy theory that it was originally meant to have been, actually! this part i have no proof for. i can make an argument that attempts to prove it would be better from a literary perspective th!
when i say it should have been, i mean that i think TLG would be a much stronger and tighter narrative if it was. the central plot up to that point is that ilya is suffering from an increasingly severe depression and that shane, under the enormous structural pressures he faces and the stress of being separated from the man he loves so much of the time (not that TLG has any compassion for shane's struggles), is unable to see that and support ilya the way he needs, and this is putting significant strain on their relationship
this is a very interesting story! and imo the natural climax of this story is for those existing pressures to reach a breaking point, which forces the characters to either reframe their relationship in order to support one another or for the relationship to shatter
for that breaking point to be a suicide attempt is narratively foregrounded by the fact that ilya's mother died by suicide and by the intent focus on ilya's depression as an increasingly defining experience of his character (and if he were a real person the number of risk factors for an attempt would be staggering: major life changes, social isolation, major depression, loss of a parent to suicide, knowledge of the means used in a completed suicide, hell even ottawa's colder weather is a risk factor).
a suicide attempt would both prompt and convey character development in a huge number of interesting directions: making space for ilya to grapple with the breadth of his feelings about mother's death. handing shane this enormous burden of guilt that he has to untangle. probably some fears of being manipulative on ilya's part, especially if the decision is ultimately that they come out. shane having to actually ask himself what he'll do if he can't have hockey and ilya, who he is outside of hockey, and who he wants to be
it also creates ongoing stakes for the rest of the narrative! if the climax of tlg is a suicide attempt, there continue to be life or death stakes for them to resolve this
finally, it would set up what is the ultimate resolution of any good romance novel: they would both die for each other, and more importantly they both want to live for each other, no matter what the plane crash, meanwhile, is... not part of a well-constructed narrative. i was once told by a writing instructor that no plot should ever rely on happenstance: a good plot is driven by the actions of the characters. "plane mechanical failure" is pretty much the ultimate in deus ex machina to propel the plot forward. it has no thematic relevance and does not resonate with the characters' interior journeys (although it moves them forward within the plot). the stakes evaporate as soon as the plane is on the ground. it feels so deeply forced.
also, what ilya writes to shane has a suicide-notey flavor about it, for lack of better words. i'm thinking especially of the fact that he thanks shane for the good memories they shared, and the reassuring tone--like he wants to make sure shane isn't left feeling guilty. there's also a... composed nature to it that doesn't make sense for a rapidly composed instagram message while a plane is crashing. it also reads like it's been through multiple versions (and okay yes from a doyleist perspective obviously it has but i think it's actually notably more thoughtfully written than like 90% of the book, as though it were very carefully created by a character who had time to make sure these last words were right)
in general, there is a much darker and much more interesting novel simmering under the surface of TLG, and if i were gonna plot diagram the outline of that novel the climax would be "ilya attempts suicide". when i look at the plot outline of the actual TLG, what goes there is "a plane almost crashes but it turns out everything's fine"--which fulfills exactly the same narrative place of putting ilya in a near-death scenario and having him send this note to shane, propelling shane's proposal--but is imo a way weaker choice on the grounds of being less character-driven, less thematically relevant, and more random

i am still not being understood. “oh hayden sucks and it’s nice when fic has him confront that and try harder” no. that’s also not it. what i am saying is he lacks the self awareness to see that he sucks because nobody in his life ever has or ever will call him on it. he’s not out here realizing that he’s been a bad friend to shane and he’s not out here wondering about jackie’s inner world and he’s not out here reflecting on the gender roles he is teaching his children.
you know how sometimes you meet men and it’s very apparent that they have never once ever asked themself why someone else is doing what they are doing? like they’ve never attempted to imagine anyone else’s headspace and it’s never even occurred to them to imagine this. the interiority and lives and motivations of others are completely absent from their experience of the world. it is not so much an intentional failure as a complete and total lack, something never taught or developed. it has never occurred to them that other people are people.
you have met this man. he is your friend’s boyfriend and you sat there in her living room asking him questions about xbox games or the economy because she loves this man and so you want to know him and love him too as an extension of loving her. and he provides one word answers because for all you are trying to know him as an extension of your love for your friend, he does not feel the same way about you or about her. he is uninterested in knowing people. it has never occurred to him that there are people to know. it has never occurred to him that there is a precious web of human connection he is missing. you are furniture. he does not ask you a single question.
that’s hayden pike.
