The surprise

Virgil knew something was wrong the moment Roman stopped talking. That alone was suspicious. But Roman also kept glancing at him, smiling to himself, adjusting things that didn’t need adjusting. It was unnerving. »Why are you smiling like that?« Virgil asked, eyeing him from across the room. »That’s your I have a plan smile. I don’t like it.« Roman clasped his hands behind his back, rocking on his heels. »I’m offended. This is my I have prepared something lovely and you will appreciate it smile.« »Those two expressions look identical,« Virgil said flatly. »It makes me feel like I’m about to be murdered.« »If I were going to murder you, I’d make it dramatic,« Roman replied and gestured grandly toward the barstool. »Now. Please be seated.« Virgil stared at it. »Why.« »Because,« Roman said, already herding him forward, »you look fantastic on elevated surfaces.« »That is the worst reason you could’ve given.« Nevertheless, Virgil sat. The barstool creaked under him as he folded his arms, posture defensive by habit. Roman hovered nearby like an excited stagehand. »Okay,« Roman said. »Close your eyes.« Virgil snorted. »Absolutely not.« Roman placed a hand over his heart. »Virge, honestly, do you think so little of me?« »Yes.« »Rude.« Roman leaned closer, voice dropping into something conspiratorial. »Just trust me. No funny business. Scout’s honor.« »You were never a scout.« »Still an honor,« Roman said quickly. »Eyes closed.«

Chapter 13

“Mmkay.” Virgil consulted what felt like an ever-growing list. “We placed the order for your super supplies with the school bookstore. I can have your other textbooks delivered.” He held up the pile of shopping bags strung on his arm. “We got you some more clothes so you’ll have a proper wardrobe.” He scrolled further down the list. “I think the next thing is probably gonna be toys?”

Roman looked taken aback. “Seriously?” He sounded even more skeptical than he looked, like he was certain this was some kind of mistake on Virgil’s part.

“Sure, buddy. What kinds of toys do you like?”

Roman hesitated. “Uh, I kind of like everything, I think?” He pondered for a moment. “I like making stuff. Like, crafts, and stuff.”

Virgil added a new item to the list—art supplies—and nodded. “How about some Legos?” he suggested.

This was clearly an excellent idea on his part; Roman absolutely lit up, his feet lifting ever-so-slightly off the ground in reflexive flight. All he said, though, with the intensity of the sun itself, was, “Yes.”

Virgil stifled a chuckle. “Perfect. Lego store, next stop.”

Summary: Logan just wanted a coffee. Why is there a giant snake in the living room?

Logan just wanted a coffee. He'd been working since breakfast and finally conceded that he needed a break. And a boost in caffeine.

Only to be stopped by Patton at the top of the stairs.

"What is going on?" Logan asks, trying to see past Patton who is holding him back by his shoulders.

"Well… I'm not actually sure," Patton says, glancing over his shoulder himself and worriedly down the stairs. "I was in the living room with Roman and Remus — they were arguing, you know, like they do — when suddenly there was a loud hiss and then this big, yellow snake appeared, grabbed Remus and threw Roman across the room! I managed to run up the stairs and Roman joined me not long after, but Remus is still trapped!"

Logan raises a brow and again tries to look past Patton. He does indeed catch a glimpse of something yellow moving past the stairs but nothing more.
