unsolved crimes; namely, the zodiac, was playing in her ears. if it wasn’t loud music, it was podcasts. it was undoubtedly morbid curiosity, but amelia couldn’t help it. she enjoyed mysteries, but more than that was the need to understand what had happened. so focused on the show, she didn’t put together someone outside the headphones was speaking until a moment later. pausing the podcast, she tugged an earbud out. “– sorry, did you say something?”
the place inside your head; naomi knew most people loved it and to be quite honest? well, it was her favorite place to be too and though she didn’t want to interrupt the teen from whatever was going on in her headphones? she didn’t blame amelia for keeping to herself more often than not, though they were a family or whatever people called it nowadays, she got it. that her life had been hard, that she sometimes needed the PEACE AND QUIET. “oh uh, nah. i mean, not really... just asked if you were going deaf, those things are loud as hell.”
SAM.
“in what universe does sammy suit me over sam?” she mused, shaking her head. it’s a nickname she doesn’t get very often, likely hasn’t since her nieces and nephew were little and it had been adorable coming from them. “don’t be too jealous, it comes at the cost of having to have phone calls with my mother and cleaning up famous people’s messes.” though she must admit, she always enjoyed the latter. other people’s messes were her speciality. “how’s all the settling in going?” sam asks idly as she starts heading down the street.
“i like it, sam makes you sound like some old dude about to play bridge with all his old folks home friends. sammy on the other hand? you could be a lively tomboy playing baseball at the field in the nineties. ” wow, and the truth is out noami, good for you. giving the woman a sheepish smile the brunette playfully rolled her eyes. she wasn’t stupid and though she was sure every job came with it’s challenges, she figured that sam didn’t quite mind all the celeb gossip she learned first. who would? as she follows after her friend, the woman gives a quick shrug. “oh please, you can’t fool me, we all know you love it. settling in is fine. i guess, boxes are unpacked, all that good shit. still sucks here though.”

wes laughed, “well, maybe if you’re doing THAT bad, they should try and take over for you for a day.” he teased, “only five bucks? shit. i don’t know if that’s worth it. though, i could buy myself a milkshake for that.” a small subtle chuckle escaped his lips.
“That’s like the last thing I want, I mean, sure they’re annoying but I don’t want them to ruin the kids.” The thought though? It made her smile and it was hardly the worst thing that she’d ever heard. “Hmm, you could and who wants to pass up milkshake money? Not anyone sane that I know.”
xreachfortheskylarx:
“People are the actual worst. Like why ruin someone’s time off, when you know how hard it is to deal with one kid let alone a swarm of them.” She may not have any problem with kids, or offering to help watch them - but even she could understand how hard it must be to deal with so many, and she wasn’t anywhere close to being a parent yet. What caught her off guard was the next part. “I don’t mean to be rude but… If you don’t like it here, can’t you move? I would, but… For some reason people won’t let you move away at sixteen.”
“Honestly! Like I don’t mind a check-in or anything but there’s not any reason to email me fifty times in the middle of the summer well I’m spending time with my own kids.” Not that some kid cared at all about what she had to say, but she was here and easy to talk to so she couldn’t complain. At the question though, Naomi found herself cringing slightly. Can’t you just move? If only life were that simple, but alas, life was not. “I don’t think my husband would like me to up and leave in the middle of the night, plus when you love someone you gotta make sacrifices, least that’s what they told me when I got married.” A joke that would probably go over the teens head. “Ah, yeah. Tried that many a time, doesn’t exactly work. Usually, people come looking for you. Sorry kid.”
shanebarnes:
“Who’s gonna care that you’re pulling me out of school if I actually have something else that’s viable lined up?” Shane asked, her tone being more curious than frustrated, which surprised even her. At the mention of homeschooling, she sighed. It was an option, sure. It just wouldn’t get her out into the real world as quickly, which she didn’t love. But if it came down to it, she knew she’d rather take that than spend two more years in an actual high school. “Yeah, it’s what I really want. I mean, I know it’s not exactly traditional or whatever, but most of my life hasn’t been, and I still turned out okay. I’m sure the whole GED thing won’t be much different.”
“The actual government, getting everything in order for the GED and stuff takes time, so you can’t just stop showing up to school and i don’t wanna get fined, I used to skip school all the time and my mom had a NICE fine to pay a couple months into the school year. ” Naomi replied as she set her cup on the table, short nails tapping there for a minute as she thought about it. How bad would it really be for Shane to take her GED? Even as someone who really was intrigued by typical education standards, Naomi believed that as long as you learned what you needed to. “You’ll really put work into it? Not just a few days of shitty studying and then wasting money on the exams for you to fail? You’ll try your best?” She knew that she probably shouldn’t say yes right away, she’d need to talk to her husband, but what was the big deal?
JIM.
jim stifles a chuckle at her robots comment, rubbing at his forehead. “i swear some people think teachers are. we want the best for our kids, but damn.” he adds, giving her a nod at her choice of alcohol. flagging down the bartender once making eye contact, he watches them head to their end of the bar. “vodka cran for the lady and any light beer for myself.” after he orders, james turns his head back to naomi. “what got you into teaching, anyway?”
“honestly, like at least wait to see if i’m a shit teacher or not before you hit up my email at all hours of the day. that’s what i do as a parent.” her eyes roll teasingly before she gave a quick smile to the bartender who seemed to give her a dirty look in return. how nice. her shoulders shrug at his question, gaze falling to him as he seems to question her job choice. “i dunno, i was a dick growing up, causing trouble for as long as i could remember and i had those few teachers who never gave up on me... when i cleaned up my act i realized i wanted to be one of those, you know? what about you, what do you do?”
lcvemehateme:
“oh, thank goodness. i really didn’t want to ruin anyone’s day this early.. or at all.” eleanor sighed softly, shaking her head, “oh, no it’s fine… i’ll just order a new one. don’t worry about it… i’m just glad it wasn’t hot coffee. i don’t need to be scalded today.”
“it’s just a bit of a spill if you seriously ruined someone’s day they might be the issue,” shoulders shrugged before she gave the young blonde a smile. “if you’re sure, but I don’t really mind. that’s lucky though, wouldn’t wanna make a trip to the ER, hey?”
fallenpatels:
pari let out a noise of agreement. “sometimes i feel like i am PART DOG. i can sleep for days on end, especially weekends.” she admitted. “wow, you started pretty young. was it what you always wanted to do?” pari was impressed, before holding out her hand for the girl. “it’s really nice to meet you, naomi. i can’t offer much, but if you ever want a wine, and a cool down, or someone to show you around the neighbourhood, let me know.”
laughter fell from the other womans lips, smile perching on her on her features at the others words. “guess you might as well make the most of it. wish i could sleep like that, seems like the kids always need something though.” not that she minded really, after all she couldn’t deny that she loved having children. “since i was like seventeen-ish, yeah. before THAT i wanted to be a professional drinker but my kidney’s decided that wasn’t gonna pan out.” nose crinkled teasingly before she shook the others hand with a grin. “It’s super nice to meet you too! that’s sweet, can’t say I’d ever turn down some wine.”
i have all my replies in drafts but i’m feeling super nauseous so i’ll be on tomorrow. xx.
xreachfortheskylarx:
“Ew, people do that? Can’t you… Temporarily block them until term starts? Or say your emails got hacked so you tragically didn’t receive any emails, or you totally would have worried about their kid needing everything green for like ever.”
“Since the teacher lists went up, I swear that hour I was getting emails. I mean, I signed up for this, it’s just super annoying. I’m not exactly excited to be here, and if I have to be? I’d like to have some time alone with my family.”
shanebarnes.
The second Shane could tell that she was considering it, her eyes lit up. “Okay, but see, it really isn’t late, ‘cause GED prep courses pretty much just let you enroll whenever you want, and then you do ‘em at your own pace or whatever. And I doubt the whole school thing will be an issue, since all I really have to do is just, like… not show up, probably. Then I could spend a couple weeks studying for all the tests, take ‘em, and bam. I’m essentially a high school graduate, and I don’t have to waste another two years of my life,” Shane insisted, wrapping up her pitch by shooting her mom the most sweet and innocent smile she could manage.
It wasn’t like naomi thought that you needed high-school to become successful. she knew that you could make a name for yourself without that, but she’d always wanted her children to do things the normal way. with a sigh, the older woman gave her daughter a slight smile. she really wanted to do this, the brunette could tell but quite honestly? she wasn’t sure. “we can get in a lot of trouble for just pulling you out of school, babe. there are a lot of meetings we’d need to go to and stuff with the school, i don’t see why you can’t just do homeschool or something. it’d be no big deal, but if this is what you really want? i’lll talk to dad, alright? we’ll think about it, at least.”
SAM.
“god, no one has called me sammy since i was like, five.” she shook her head, huffing in slight amusement even as her nose crinkled in distaste of an age old nickname. she smirks though as naomi does as suggested, head tilting to the side. “fine by me. you know i don’t know what a budget is.” the perks of never having to worry about money, even if it did mean having to speak to her parents from time to time.
“it’s kinda cute, still suits you.” she hummed gently, pocketing her phone because honestly? what does she have to lose? what she wants is a break and she gets it by shutting her phone off. “ wish we all could live like that, i’d literally pay like ten dollars to have a little more cash.” sure, the townsends weren’t uncomfortable by any means, they were happy and comfortable that was what mattered, but extra wouldn’t hurt. “lead the way to coffee, pal.”
jim.
“teachers don’t deserve breaks ; it’s not like you’re human or anything.” jim continues sarcastically, rolling his eyes at the fact that there are people out in the world that expect teachers to be at their every beck and call. “what do you like? i’ll shout. but the next one’s on you, right? i do shout for shout.”
“we’re robots, didn’t you know? we got back to school and recharge there every night, we only get to act human for the first few weeks of summer.” laughter falls from her lips and the brunette nods her head, he buys her a drink, she’ll buy him one. it’s only fair, right? “Vodka-cran is fine with me. but RIGHT. you’ve got it, dude.”
fallenpatels:
pari couldn’t HELP the laugh that escaped her at the mention of the girl wanting to be a dog. “a dog is a GOOD LIFE GOAL.” she tried to support the woman’s past decision. she laughed yet again, knowing all too well how over-zealous some parents could get. “have you been a teacher for long?” pari asked, raising an eyebrow to the girl. “sorry, i just don’t know if i’ve seen you much before. i’m pari.” she introduced.
“still kinda wish I wanted to be one, I mean all they do is sleep. how’s that not the DREAM for everyone?” laughter fall from her own lips and Arabella nodded her head before sighing. god, she really hated ashcroft and it was like she just remembered. these parents would probably find her at the grocery store or something if she didn’t answer these emails. “since i was twenty-two. so like fourteen years, i guess? we’re new around here, i’m naomi.”
shanebarnes.
“Mm, good. Bring me back some McFlurries after your shifts. I prefer the M&M kind,” Shane informed her. “I appreciate this whole glass half full vibe you’re going for right now, I really do. But I still have two whole years left. Being halfway done is a hell of a lot different than being almost done.” The younger girl paused again. As much as she really, really was not in the mood to bring this up right now, she knew this was her opening. So, reluctantly, she took it. “And it’d be one thing if I was actually getting something out of these last two years there, but I won’t be. I’m not going to college once this is all over. So it’d almost be a better use of my time to get, like… a GED or something.”
“You got it, bet I could get them half price and everything,” the older woman grinned at the other before cocking her head to the side. She felt incredibly bad for Shane quite honestly, the fact that she’d been held back, she was bright and funny and sweet. If only that counted for something, right? She wished that it did but here they were. Reaching forward Naomi placed a hand on the teens own and gave a slight squeeze. “You’re getting there though,” this was what she always did, was always overly positive about shit like this, so maybe just maybe there was a piece of her still in there. Brow furrowed, hands instead coming to rest on the tabletop as she thought about it. A GED, maybe they could think about it. “Oh, honey, I don’t know... School starts in a few weeks, it’s a little late.”
