Male and female cecaelias are generally quite feared due to the strength and length of their tentacles. However, this type of merpeople prefer to be left alone and keep to their own kind.

One can see the faint glow in the stained glass windows at night. Some can see these tiny creatures in the spirals of the water. Others see the winged beings in the circular holes in the hedges. But the elderly lady who owns the greenhouse can see the fae at all times. She never lost the magical sight for her mind remained opened, and her heart stayed as pure as a child.

The Breath Law

A merfolk's kiss grants a mortal the ability to breathe underwater. If a mermaid or merman gifts a human the ability to breathe underwater, then that person is bound to the sea forever. If they return to land, they will always hear the ocean calling. Refusing the call leads to wasting sickness.

Because of this, many believe a human will eventually grow a tail and become a mermaid afterward. This would allow the person to continuously be submerged underwater to inhale the salty water. However, some believe the person becomes a water nymph. Others say this process is how water witches are born. Yet, it's highly possible an individual only gains additional abilities (speed, strength, stamina, flexibility, night vision, pollution filtering, and cold immunity) to help them swim, but they don't become a specific creature.

Water Type: Saltwater

Region: Temperate and tropical waters worldwide. Coastal areas, bays, and open ocean environments. Indian Ocean, Atlantic Ocean/Coast, and Pacific Ocean/Coast, as well as gulf of Mexico. Enclosed seas like the Mediterranean and Black Sea.

Bonded Animal: Bottlenose Dolphin

Description: The tropical merfolk tend to have dorsal fins, but are attracted to pastel colored things. Much like bottlenose dolphins, they have distinct, individual personalities. Some are bold and curious, often investigating things. These merpeople usually act as central leader figures in their social groups, helping spread new information or survival techniques. Meanwhile, others are shy and cautious. Generally, all bottlenose dolphin merfolk are playful, social, and intelligent as their animal. They form deep, decades-long friendships and stable social networks. In addition, they're capable of using problem-solving skills with tools.

Greek Mythology: The Underworld —Aesthetic

Land of the Dead

The Underworld a hidden subterranean realm where souls go after death. It's ruled by the god Hades and his queen, Persephone. There are three regions in this land. First is the Asphodel Meadows. The gloomy plain is where ordinary souls wander with no specific memory or purpose. Elysium is a sunny paradise reserved for heroes, the virtuous, and the pure. Lastly, Tartarus is a deep, dark abyss used as a maximum-security prison for Titans and wicked mortals. The realms geography is also bounded by five distinct rivers. This includes: the Styx (hatred and oaths), Acheron (woe), Cocytus (tears), Phlegethon (fire), and Lethe (forgetfulness).

Sea Goddess —Aesthetic

Goddess of the Sea

The Sea Goddess rules over countless seas across the globe. In addition, she's higher in divinity and power to the general Water Goddess, who resides over all forms of refreshwater. Unfortunately, the Sea Goddess' rank is beneath the Ocean Goddess. This is because she's the middle sister in the trio. The second goddess lives in a gloworm cavern with a massive air pocket for her to explore the rocky formations.

Ethereal Meanings

Spiritual Angel Veil: Being born with an amniotic membrane or perceiving a barrier to the divine. Someone who can see and interact with the supernatural. These include: angels, demons, spirits, ghosts, etc.

Angel Protection: Gaining an angel's presence is seen as an opening of spiritual sight or an invitation for divine safety, rather than a barrier being broken.

Theological Veil: This veil evokes heavenly or spiritual connection. Such as the tearing of temple veil in Christian theology or the ethereal.

Spiritual Thinness: In broader ethereal thought, a "torn veil" can mean a thinning boundary between the physical world and the spiritual realm.

Water Type: Freshwater (mixed salt/freshwater, brackish water near the coast).

Region: Central America, specifically the Atlantic/Gulf of Mexico drainage basins of Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala. Secluded swamps, marshes, slow-moving rivers, and lagoons.

Bonded Animal: Morelet’s Crocodile

Description: Crocodile Merfolk are fierce-looking and strong creatures. Their tales contain the tough scales of crocodiles and their fins match their bonded animal's color. Both also have sharp teeth and webbed hands. These merpeople are also shy, timid, and reclusive like their crocodiles. Individual temperaments can vary from relatively calm to fiercely defensive or aggressive toward others.

Greek Mythology: Persephone —Aesthetic

Persephone's Character & Personality

Persephone is the Goddess of Spring. Her father is Zeus, the God of the Sky and Lightning as the King of Gods on Mount Olympus. Persephone's mother is Demeter, the Goddess of Harvests and Agriculture. Her parents are siblings. Persephone is the eldest child out of five maternal half-siblings. Meanwhile, she's one of fifteen paternal known children out of over a hundred half-siblings. Lastly, one of Persephone's uncles is Hades. She started out as a pure maiden, never had been touched by males. Persephone was a carefree and innocent girl who was highly protected by her mother. As she adapted to life later on, she maintained her gentle and joyful traits while on Earth. Persephone's associated symbols include: General flowers, grain, seeds, fruit, and the Earth's greenery growth. Sacred flora are Crocuses, Violets, and Lilies.

Greek Mythology: Hades —Aesthetic

King Hades' Character & Personality

Hades is the Greek God of the Dead and King of the Underworld. He's the grandson of the Earth named Gaia, and the Sky, Uranus; who were mother and son before marrying. Their children were Hades' parents: the Titan Leader, Cronus, and Rhea, the Titaness of fertility. The siblings were the parents of the original six Olympian gods, with Hades being the fourth born-child. He's the younger brother of Hestia, Demeter, and Hera. But Hades is the older brother of Poseidon and Zeus. Lastly, his niece and wife is Persephone. Historically, Hades is mythologically grim, stoic, and unyielding. Not much is known about him since he's feared by mortals. He's usually stern and pitiless towards others, yet devoted to his queen. More than anything, Hades is fundamentally fair and manages his vast, gloomy domain with strict responsibility. This makes him less chaotic and philandering than his brothers. As such, Hades is notoriously reclusive and focused on his duties. His associated symbols include: A Scepter, a Bident, the Helm of Darkness, Cerberus, the Cornucopia, and the Earth's mineral wealth. Sacred plants are the cypress tree and narcissus flowers.

Greek Mythology: Hades & Persephone —Aesthetic

Hades & Persephone's Union

In the foundational text, the Homeric Hymn to Demeter (c. 650 BCE), the marriage is an arranged abduction. Hades asked his brother, Zeus, if he could marry his daughter, Persephone. Zeus agrees to the arranged marriage, unbeknownst to the chosen bride, and tells Hades to keep this discreet as to not upset Demeter, Persephone's mother. This is because the Goddess of Agriculture would have denied their union. Hades then kidnaps his niece, and marries her, keeping her in the Underworld. When Demeter lost her child, she deprived humans of harvests, causing world famine. Meanwhile, Persephone was terrified and unwilling in the union; leading to what is known as, "The R*pe of Persephone."

After a year, Zeus had no choice but to send Hermes to retrieve Persephone between humans crying to the gods for food and the other greek deities complaining about the lack of sacrifices from people. When the Guide of Souls found her, he described her as Hades' "shy mate, strongly reluctant" because she deeply missed her mother and wanted to leave. Hermes then requested Persephone be freed. Hades begrudgingly agreed, but not before forcing Persephone to eat the seed of a pomegranate, or tricking her into taking it by sneaking it into her pocket. Having his bride eat or take the food of the Underworld linked her to the realm forever. Hades did this believing she wouldn't return to his side otherwise, even if he thought Persephone was only to return to the Human World for a short time to comfort her mother.

Once Persephone was reunited with her mother, Demeter immediately knew something was wrong. She could sense her child was now bound to the Underworld and must return to it. However, after making a fuss, a compromise was reached. Persephone would then be allowed to return to the Mortal Realm for half a year, then live in the Underworld for the other half. Regardless, whenever mother and daughter were together, spring and summer would return to earth. While apart, autumn and winter would consume the world due to the grieving mother. This is how the four seasons came about.

Pearl Mermaid Empress —Aesthetic

Pearl Merfolk

Water Type: Saltwater & Freshwater.

Region: All over the world, from the shallows to the deep and the tropics to the Arctic. Clams and mussels can be in fresh or saltwater, but oysters are only in salt or brackish habitats.

Bonded Animal(s): Species of Bivalves (Oysters, Mussels, Clams, Scallops, etc.)

Description: Pearl Merfolk are technically bonded to bivalves, but rather than have the appearance and personalities of the animal, these merpeople are only bonded to them due to their ability to detect the pearls that grew inside these shelled-creatures. Pearl Merfolk tails can come in a variety of colors, just like all the pearls they collect. These mythical beings pride themselves of decoring their bodies with the pearls they harvest.

Monarchy: Since pearls can be found globally, Pearl Merpeople have an Empress Mermaid known as the Mother of Pearls. She has a white, glossy, and nearly translucent fin. Due to this, there's not an inch of her that isn't covered in pearls to hide her almost transparent tail. The Empress' job is to manage the smaller kingdoms under her, which house the pearl farms providing income for her people. Pearls are these merfolk's only tradable resource to other Merpeople Clans as they're incapable of hunting or forging for themselves.

Siren Song Motel —Aesthetic

Beach Motel

As the name suggests, the Siren Song Motel is themed after fish sirens and mermaids. Bedspreads, lamps, and other décor are inspired by these beautiful creatures. This motel isn't far from a white, sandy beach. However, if guests don't feel like making the trip down to the shoreline, they can opt to relax by the pool instead.

Tarpon Mermaid —Aesthetic

Tarpon Merfolk

Water Type: Primarily Saltwater, but Freshwater Adaptable.

Region: Tropical and subtropical waters throughout the Atlantic Ocean. Primary habitat spans from Virginia to the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, Brazil, and along the West African coast. They're highly adaptable and move between shallow bays, estuaries, open marine waters, and freshwater rivers.

Bonded Animal: Tarpon Fish

Description: These merfolk are famous for their naturally shining, silver scales. Like their bonded animal, Tarpon merpeople have great stamina. They're also feisty, playful, and highly athletic. The acrobatic creatures are known for spectacular mid-air jumps and stubborn, marathon-like fights. Despite their imposing size, the merfolk are skittish, yet intelligent beings as mature fish are wary of boats.

Harp Seal Mermaid —Aesthetic

Water Type: Saltwater

Region: Arctic & North Atlantic Oceans.

Bonded Animal: Harp Seal

Description: Harp Seal Mermaids are a type of Polar Merfolk. Their fins will change color depending on the life stage of their bonded animal. Harp Seal Mermaids are white while their seal is a baby. Their fin is gray with scattered black scales to mirror the black spots on a teenager seal's body. Finally, the merfolk's tail will become lighter, with a unique dark patch on their back, which resembles a harp; for the adult seal. In rare cases, the merperson can form a flipper like a harp seal instead of a fin if their bond is strong enough with a particular seal. Like their bonded animal, their personalities can range from timid and shy to boisterous and playful. They're naturally cautious around strangers but can be quite bold when safe or with their herd.
