Music in Spanish- Recs list part 1

Okay, I grew up in Mexico (a lot of these are going to be from there, if you want more variety feel free to add artists from other nationalities in the notes), so I’m going to put in my best effort to recommend stuff that isn’t too common or that you haven’t heard about yet.

Buckle up, I’m about to divide the recs in at least 3 posts. The artist comes first, I mention their accent, and then a song by the artist previously mentioned (the link will be to the version of the song with lyrics, so you can better understand it).

hi! i am trying to learn spanish on my own, specifically mexican spanish, and i am have trouble finding beginner level reading material. I was wondering if theres any like kids/beginner level books you'd recommend

I have the best resource. Unlike other countries, the Mexican government makes its own books that are sent to every public school in the country (yes, the government makes the books, it doesn't pay to publishing houses to make them, history books may or may not be full of lies). One of the good things is they're made specifically for the Mexican people, which means Mexican Spanish and Mexican culture.

In Mexico we have six grades of elementary school and each grade has an anthology book of stories. Tho I think some stories are translations and some are by Mexican authors. But the best part is these books are available online, since the 1960 generation of books until the 2014 generation. I'm going to send you the ones my siblings and I used when we were in school and the most recent ones available, but you can go around the site and find the ones you like better. You can find there the Spanish books that are used to learn grammar, that might be useful too.

Ser — to be

Ser is an irregular verb. We will be focusing on it in its present tense.

First we have to understand that in Spanish, there are six ways to conjugate every verb.

The basic pronouns in Spanish are as follows:

It should be noted that usted and ustedes are the formal versions of the English pronoun “you.”

This would be the conjugation for the verb “ser” in Spanish:

When do we use the verb “ser”?

identificación: to identify people or objects (“Yo soy Ana,” “Es una computadora”)

ocupación: to say your profession (“Tú eres medico”)

orígen: to say where you are from (“Ella es de Argentina”)

posesión: to say something belongs to someone (“Los libros son de los niños”)

personalidad: to say your personality traits (“Nosotros somos interesante”)

Time

¿Qué hora es? — What time is it?

To answer this question, use this formula: “Son las [horas] y [minutos].”

Son las tres y veinte. (3:20)

Son las once y cuatro. (11:04)

When it is 1 o'clock, however, it becomes “es la una” instead of “son las una”

In English we say “and a quarter” or “and a half” if it is X:15 or X:30, respectively. This would be the Spanish equivalent:

La Media — Half-an-hour/30 minutes

El Cuarto — Quarter/15 minutes

If it is almost the end of an hour, you can use this formula instead: “Son las [horas] menos [minutos].”

Son las cuatro menos diez. (3:50)

Son las siete menos tres. (6:57)

If the time is exact (“sharp”) you would add “en punto” to the end.

Son las tres en punto. (3:00)

To specify the time of day, you would add any of these to the end:

de la mañana — in the morning

de la tarde — in the afternoon/evening

de la noche — at night

Son las ocho y catorce de la mañana. (8:14 AM)

Son las tres y nueve de la tarde. (3:09 PM)

Son las diez menos cinco de la noche. (9:55 PM)

Similar to the 1 o'clock rule, noon and midnight are also treated differently.

El Mediodía — Noon/Midday

La Medianoche — Midnight

You would drop the article (la/las) and just write the time as:

Es mediodía. (12:00PM)

Es medianoche en punto (12:00AM)
