HAPPY HALLOWEEN! Jack Skellington in The Nightmare Before Christmas dir. Henry Selick | 1993
okay not sure how to approach this gently but say that, hypothetically, you own some essential oil sprays purchased from a huge department store chain. and there is a recall because they contain deadly disease causing bacteria that has confirmed deaths and has infected and killed who knows how many people because of how rare and difficult to diagnose it is in the united states:
do not throw out the bottles. do not dump the product in the toilet. do not allow the deadly bacteria into the soil, water supply, or landfills. it is an extreme biohazard. do not throw it out. do not throw it out. do not open the bottles.
put on gloves, double bag it tightly in resealable bags, put it in a cardboard box, and give it back to any of the chain's stores. disinfect everything in the room where it was used while wearing gloves. wash sheets and blankets on hot. consider using bleach.
Customers will also receive a $20 Walmart Gift Card upon return. Consistent with CDC recommendations, consumers should immediately stop usi

these products are being recalled for burkholderia pseudomallei contamination, which causes melioidosis. it can infect pets.
without early treatment, melioidosis caused by the bacteria in these products has a higher than 40% mortality rate. it can easily kill you and will hurt the entire time even if you survive. treatment takes several months and involves intensive intravenous (IV) antibiotics and potentially surgery. there is a high rate of recurrence, long term injury, and disability even with survival. this is not a condition with simple diagnostics or treatment, this is not a painless condition, this is not a condition that is easily survived, and survival involves spending weeks to months in a hospital. in the best case scenario, with immediate diagnosis and treatment, mortality rate is 10%. it can cause growths on organs, septic shock, sudden paralysis, solidification of the lungs, pneumonia, sepsis, joint infection, bone infection, and so much more.
melioidosis can also remain latent for decades after bacteria exposure.
the bacteria can survive for months to years indoors, in water, in the soil, and more.
the bacteria infects people through inhalation, cuts in the skin, and ingestion. since this is an air spray, that is very bad. this is a bacteria so deadly that it and related bacteria have been used in war. do not fuck around with this

pretty shitty how baseline human activities like singing, dancing and making art got turned into skillsĀ instead of being seen as behaviors
so now itās likeĀ āthe point of doing them is to get good at themā and notĀ āthis is a thing humans do, the way birds sing and bees make hivesā.
I know Iāve posted this before, but it bears repeating.
This is a thing humans do; you donāt have to be good at it to enjoy it.

Walmart is recalling nearly 4,000 bottles from a line of aromatherapy spray products linked with a bacterial disease outbreak. A bottle of āBetter Homes & Gardens Lavender & Chamomile Essential Oil Infused Aromatherapy Room Spray with Gemstonesā tested positive for B. pseudomallei, a rare and sometimes deadly bacteria that causes melioidosis.

holy shit theyāre offering a damn bounty on the bottles. $20 for each one turned in. On a $4 product. That means itās BAD bad.
OH THIS IS VERY BAD
Two people have already died (one a child). This illness can be very difficult to diagnose, so if you get it thereās a good chance you wonāt get the proper medical treatment, which is both precise and intense (a 2 to 8 week hospital stay with medication pumped into your blood every few hours begins the process, which can last 6 months)
The illness itself is super bad. Anorexia can be a symptom of this disease. The bacteria does different things depending on where it is in your body, and it can spread and go after all your systems at once: skin, gut, heart and lungs, brain and nervous system.. giving you a rash, ulcers, pneumonia, seizures, and more
Sometimes it makes you sick a few days after you are exposed. Sometimes it makes you sick years after you were exposed. Maybe it just gives you a headache disorder. Maybe it kills you within 48 hours. It can live sustainably in soil and water and infect whole regions of the landscape permanently.Ā
This is sort of a nightmare bacteria weāre still learning about. Currently we think death rates are low, but there is more and more data indicating it causes far more deaths than is currently understood because of how often it goes un-diagnosed.
We need to get all 4 thousand of these bottles back, not just thrown away where the bacteria can spread to the environment.

āI think poetry is all about slowing down ā writing it, reading it, making use of language in a way that stills and distills, letting language make use of you in a way that lets you make contact with what youāre looking at. Contact is always the point. Wonderment, in a way, is always the point. What I like about wonderment as a driving force is that you can feel it amid chaos and horror and bewilderment: it isnāt the same as optimism, and it doesnāt necessarily beautify. It does clarify, though; it sharpens the edges of things, shows us where they touch each other. The poems I love most ā and not just poems, but maybe especially poems, because poetry is a slow medium, built with a substantive smallness that invites and permits real focus ā usually feel like a sudden taking-in-of-air amid the dizziness of Everything Else as it ricochets around. Maybe that breath is a gasp, maybe a crying out, maybe a steadying sigh, maybe a burst of laughter. In any case, the intent is absolutely to inhale and register yourself breathing and feel the blood running around in your body.ā
