DM Poll

Calling all my DMs out there!

I recently had a player kill his character (twice in a row) out of pigheadedness during my Curse of Strahd campaign and I have a BUNCH of stuff lined up for the character so I REALLY don’t want him to be gone gone.

But I can’t just resurrect him as I did it once and he died immediately so if I do it again death loses all meaning in the game.

Should I:

1. Let him re-roll and use his character as an NPC zombie - I like it but I still lose all the emotional resonance and connections his character built up

2. Pop his soul in a random NPC and have him rediscover the memories of his past self - which I really really like for the drama but would mean he’s under-levelled for a bit

3. Bring him back ‘alive’ but working for Strahd/The Dark Powers now - which is cool but negates the redemption arc his character was on. This is a player that ALWAYS turns to the dark side and I was looking forward (as was he) to him actually being motivated to play a good character.

4. YOUR SUGGESTION

I would either zombie or ghost him. I prefer the idea of making him a ghost, who the party can see, but none of the NPC’s Kayla and less they have some sort of second sight.

Make him some sort of special ghost class that gains a different ghostly powers as he levels up… At level one he can only nudge some things and be visible and hear about by his party, but if he levels up maybe he can possess objects and then people and then make himself manifest as himself and then eventually his other forms…

Basically make him a living minor illusion-mage hand spell. He still a piece of the party end of the storyline, and whatever grapes or goals he used to have he can still force the party to accomplish on his behalf.

3 is also a good option, especially since then it’s another quest line to try and break free from his new masters control. But I think a combination of one and two would be dramatic and rewarding, but also punishing for his pig headedness

I really like the ghost angle but I feel like that would be boring for him to play long term and might create a disconnect with the other players? It’s a neat idea and I think it would work really awesome short term though. I’d love to use this for a player that Strahd was bored with when the die. Thanks!

That character is dead now, recycle your ideas for their next character or somebody else’s character.

Having the character revive in any way sets a bad precedent for your characters, death doesn’t mean anything any more, and if another character dies and doesn’t get to have their character revived in the same way they’ll be upset that their character doesn’t get revived too.

Unless they can somehow fork out the gold for a true ressurection spell, that character should remain dead.

That’s my take on it anyways.
