Do you have any advice on how to know if you have DID?
(Whoops, sorry, just saw this was in my drafts and never actually posted!)
I can do my best to share some things that clued me into the fact I had DID! Of course, I’m not a mental health professional–I’m just sharing my personal experiences and things I’ve heard from other systems too.
Dissociative experiences:
Amnesia is a big one! Missing gaps in time, like not remembering a chunk of childhood, how you got to a certain place, or anything from a day earlier this week. Those are all amnesia episodes. It’s required to have at least one episode of this for a DID diagnosis.
Feeling out of it a lot of the time–classic dissociation! DID is a dissociative disorder, meaning that you’ll probably feel like you have out of body experiences, like you’re not really “driving” the body, or like you’re walking in a dream.
Noticing alters:
I had been talking with my alters for a long time before I knew I had a system, they just didn’t describe themselves as alters. Not everyone talks with theirs at all, though!
Here’s what they might appear as:
Spirit guides, even deities if that would make sense for your faith or beliefs. It’s easier for you to hear them when they already fit into something you believe. (Not all spirit guides are alters, I do believe we can hear spirits legitimately if we’re intuitive!)
Imaginary friends that you’ve retained beyond childhood.
Hallucinations, like flashbacks. Our abuser introject alter often appeared like a vivid flashback, but it was a new scene of abuse rather than something that happened in the past (i.e. him creating a mental traumatic experience).
Thoughts that don’t seem like your own.
An “inner child” that exists beyond just inner child meditations or conscious times when you try to dive into your own identity as a child. More like a child that’s within you that seems independent in personality to you.
Clues others might give you:
People can say a lot of things. Here’s some of the things I heard before my diagnosis that now make a lot of sense!
“You went by a different name earlier”
“You don’t remember kissing me the other day?”
“Yeah, it was like you were possessed by someone else. He was cool though!”
“It seems like you’re always looking for your identity, like you don’t really know who you are.”
“Didn’t you like that food the other day? Why don’t you like it now?”
Noticing switching:
Part of DID is alters switching in and out of the body/fronting, and it can feel very strange! It’s not always very obvious either, since alters can be co-conscious with you.
Memories cutting off: Like remembering part of something stressful, then it suddenly just ends mid memory. This has always been indicative of a switch for us!
Feeling like you’re watching yourself do things: Sometimes it can still feel vaguely like you’re in control, but then when you actually intend to do something it doesn’t really happen. Like you’re suddenly watching yourself act things out, rather than making the choice to act them out.
Feeling possessed: Descriptions of spirit possession can feel very similar to switching! Just, obviously, that’s not what DID is (and it can be very harmful to say that alters or systems can form from spirits).
Experiencing unusual emotions that don’t seem like your own. Even if an alter isn’t totally up front, you might suddenly feel a strange emotion. Like “I” would suddenly feel furious at my abuser and suddenly just get up and go for a really fast run, despite being a really passive person and not at all a fan of running.
Feeling like a different gender or age suddenly. Alters can have different ages (like I used to suddenly feel like a child, which I now know was co-consciousness with our child alter) and different genders.
Suddenly wanting to dress or style yourself differently, or having different food, music, etc tastes that are uncharacteristic for you. I used to joke about having a strange “punk side” before recognizing Bael was an alter in my system.
I really hope these help clue you in to common DID experiences! Of course, a trained professional will be best helping you figure this out. :)

how we (finally) built an inner world
hi it’s georgie halcyonminor!!! this is gonna be a long post but hopefully it might be helpful to other systems?
so i (probably) have osdd1b and a thing that i/we have struggled with for years has been developing an inner world/headspace. like we’ve felt really fake for a long time because of not having one and it’s made us feel pretty bad at times… anyways yesterday with the help of our partner we did a successful visualization/trance exercise that let us actually create and visit one! and i wanted to share the technique we did for any other systems who might have a hard time with this. i can’t promise it’ll work for you but it worked for us and it’s fairly exciting to us! this is designed for people with some ability to visualize but some of what i mention may still be useful for folks with aphantasia
i’ll get into more abt visualization in another post i think BUT first i just wanna describe what we did. we started with a meeting room that multiple parts can meet in at once, but we’re gonna try and make individual rooms for parts later..
an issue we had for a while is that trying to just imagine a room w/ a couch in it always produced kind of a shitty windowless room with an ugly couch and like. who wants to hang out there!!!
one other note: we are incredibly fortunate to have a partner system that we live with irl who is knowledgeable about dissociation, trauma, visualization/hypnosis, and particulars of our life/system and that we trust immensely. so they were able to help with us and i think that this is much much easier with someone guiding the meditation - it could probably be done remotely via discord or whatever as well, though
so here’s what we did:
picked a room aesthetic that appeals enough to us in general to be a pleasant meeting space. if you have trouble communicating and/or wildly varying tastes this may be difficult but it can be changed and modified as needed. having actual pictures of a room similar to what you want helps a lot - ours is loosely based off the interiors from the love witch (2016)
wrote a short but semi-detailed description of what the room looks like. here’s ours:
“Imagine a room with purple walls and a thick red carpet and faux-Victorian furniture (like the Love Witch). The curtains on the windows are red velvet and glass lamps hang from the ceilings and sit on tables, although the curtains are not drawn; enough natural light flows in that the room is airy and comfortable. Along the walls are bookshelves and tables with various knickknacks and small objects. There is a large, plush velvet couch in the center of the room which can comfortably fit multiple people, and which seems capable of expanding as necessary to fit more. In front of it sits a coffee table. There are also chairs around the table and throughout the room in which people can sit without having to be on the couch.”
then:
gave the description to our partner and got into a comfy position - our partner knows a lot about hypnosis scripts and was able to improvise a relaxation exercise to get us into a trance/visualization state (it was the descending stairs exercise, if you’ve ever done that one) - you can also write a script for this is improvisation won’t work for you
we just kinda went at it after that. we visualize different details of the room at different times - first the wallpaper, then the feel and color of the curtains, individual objects on shelves, etc. we had a mirror in the room which was neat because i (georgie) got to see myself in-headspace
idk if this helps anyone but the main this we wanna stress are:
writing stuff down in detail is REALLY helpful. remember that a headspace in many cases is something you build, not that appears out of the aether for you. writing and describing and making notes on it isnt cheating!
pinterest boards/aesthetic blogs are also useful for finding images to go off of
even if you have limited visualization ability you can still write descriptions of a headspace, find pictures that look like what you want, and if you are inclined towards visual arts you can try drawing stuff too

They think I have late stage Addison’s disease.
I have more testing I have to do.
I’m without words. This is terrifying.

This is what it’s doing to my body as we speak..
This is what i get all over my body when I get flare ups from stress. It’s extremely painful and leaves open sores, which is dangerous because I have a compromised immune system
My body is shutting down, and I’m fighting my hardest to get a diagnosis to TREAT whatever this is AS SOON AS POSSIBLE because the symptoms are getting more severe by every flare up I have..
I’ve had to have 3 emergency catheters so far because my bladder keeps completely shutting down..
