A common strand of thought in human cultures is vitalism, the idea that there is some special irreducible biological “something” that is the root source of life. For centuries in Western thought the vital forces were manifested in the four humours; in the East you had concepts like qi or prana. By the nineteenth century budding physiologists argued over which tissue contained the elan vital, but as a holdover from the humour theory blood remained popular, and featured prominently in racist theories of human diversity. Today, we have DNA as the biological essence of humanity.

DNA isn’t a terrible cultural choice for the biologic seat of the soul. After all, it does encode the basic instructions for your body, and (indirectly through the brain) your mind. At the end of the day, though, it’s just a molecule containing information – recipes if you will – on how to make proteins. From the (admittedly reductionist) biological point of view, it does not contain magical properties, or set in stone the course of your life. It contributes to what makes you you, but does not define you. It does not have a soul. In popular culture, however, DNA is a powerful or even terrifying force. Mutants gain wildly disparate superpowers. Getting bitten by a radioactive spider alters an unassuming young man into a spider-human hybrid. Clones inherit not just physical characteristics, but the complete memories of their genetic donors. “Unstable” genetics can cause characters to devolve or change shape at will.

Almost Human picks up on the zeitgeist that DNA is special. The society presented in the series has valorized DNA as both a marker of identity and the “thing” that makes humans unique and noteworthy. It separates the humans from non-humans, and the elites from ordinary people. In one unusual case (clones), having the unacceptable DNA apparently renders a person a lesser grade of human. The show also has a tendency to attribute mystical powers to DNA, as a sign of its “specialness.”

I'm in love with this panel. Maybe it's because chromes are one of the most interesting topic of discussions in relation to AH. I like your question "who definies what those boxes are" because it's something I have often asked myself too. But I like even more your final note: 

In other words, the chrome population would suffer from a severe lack of genetic diversity, and may be closer to clones of each other than they are similar to the wild-type population

I had never taken into consideration this conclusion but, OMG, it is absolutely true. This is something I would like to see discussed more even in a virtual second season. 

I'm wondering... should we try creating, as a group, that "symbolic" checklist? To see what we consider elements that the future could take into consideration when creating the "perfect" human being?
