say what you will about the world ending and 2020 being hell. since quarantines started, the air is filled with laughter and talk. i hear kids playing in backyards with their family. i hear people talking happily on the phone with loved ones. everyone has their doors open to the porches at our apartment. you smell cooking, see the lights of backyard firepits, hear children delighted to spend time with parents that are never home. i love the videos of people playing music with their neighbors, playing bingo from their balconies, pranking their family members, and streaming with their friends. i love that my mom and dad keep stealing access to netflix because they are home from work and finally have a chance to watch movies together. my neighbors wave at me when i take the dog out while they laugh with each other over a beer. i know more than anything its a commentary on capitalism but it’s still great to see people being people. its good to know there are still humans and that they are being relentlessly, beautifully human, regardless of what happens.

I’m reluctant to reblog this post, because I do not want to give OP even more stress than they are already experiencing, but fuck, if I can break the pattern of endless hate messages and create some positive ones, that might help. So here goes:

OP’s post was written by a poor, working class, disabled, immunocompromised person who has to work outside and is struggling with medical bills. It did not come from a place of privilege.

OP’s post was a heartwarming, lovely little anecdote written at the start of this whole thing when numbers of deaths were low and it was written simply about the joy of life when most of capitalism grinds to a halt and the sense of community people find in difficult times.

Which is such a widespread experience among people who have been working multiple jobs and long commutes for decades and suddenly find that that is gone. There is no class privilege in that, it is often experienced most profoundly by those most exploited.

There is a lesson in that: capitalism doesn’t just rob us of most of our day, it robs us of the sound of children laughing on our streets and doors open on the porch and neighbors who know each others names. Capitalism robs us of the things that make life beautiful and worth living.

And finding joy in that life worth living is especially important when people are dying. What the fuck is the point of fighting to stay alive if not joy and community?

But Tumblr took OPs lovely little post and decided that to ruin their life for it. They are currently no longer active on Tumblr because of an endless inflow of angry notes, horrible anons, ridiculous assumptions about their supposed ‘privilege’ and just all the vile that social media can throw at them.

Which is disgusting. This is part of why I hate Tumblr and what it does to people. It’s as bad as twitter sometimes. You can take a wonderful little post about humanity at its best and show yourself as humanity as its worst. Fuck that shit.

A fish trying not to get eaten wouldn’t slow down when the “predator” slows down. It also wouldn’t constantly swim in a circle near the edge of the tank; It’d try hiding. Also a fish in a tank in a a public place that is constantly filled with people is not likely to see people as predators.
