The Last Light AU
"What if Mikey Disappeared?"
(from the Rise of TMNT Movie) The story starts off where the family starts to grieve after Leo's heroic sacrifice after fighting off Kraang Prime... . . . .
The world was still, yet the silence was deafening.
Casey Jr., having fought through the wreckage of what remained after their battle with the Kraang, stumbled over jagged debris. He dropped his hockey stick the moment he saw it—Leo's katana, lying among the rubble.
His heart sank to the pit of his stomach. Trembling, Casey Jr. picked up the blade, the cool steel reflecting his tear-streaked face. He fell to his knees, unable to accept what this meant. His friend, the leader he had followed through thick and thin, was gone. Leo was dead. His mind raced as the weight of it all finally settled in. He clutched the katana to his chest, a hollow ache spreading through him. The devastation reflected in his eyes was too much to bear, yet he couldn't bring himself to let go of the weapon—this gave him flashbacks of his who also sacrificed himself for Casey Jr. to reach the portal. Elsewhere, at the construction site, April was kneeling beside Splinter, holding him as he wept for his lost son. Her own tears fell silently as she tried to stay strong, but it was impossible. The grief was crushing. She turned, her eyes red and swollen, as Sister Kraang loomed over them, her grotesque form sneering down at the broken family. She laughed, a cruel and sadistic sound, savoring their suffering. April's fists tightened, the helplessness overwhelming her as she faced the reality that Leo wasn’t coming back.
But across the city, on the desolate battlefield, Mikey was not ready to accept it.
Amidst the chaos, Mikey knelt on the ground, staring at the empty space where his brother should have been. His hands shook, and tears flowed freely down his face. His heart refused to believe the truth, refused to believe that Leo was gone. His older brother—the one who always protected them, who always found a way out—couldn't be gone. Not Leo.
Surrounded by Donnie and Raph, both unconscious, their bodies broken and battered, Mikey clenched his fists. He was the only one left standing. His chest heaved as he began to sob. His tears fell onto the dirt below, but his heart held on to a sliver of hope. He couldn’t let go. Not yet. He had to do something.
Mikey raised his hand, trembling but determined. "I... I'm not giving up on him!" he choked out, his voice breaking.
He gritted his teeth, channeling every ounce of his willpower into creating the portal. His mystic energy surged, and for a moment, a golden light engulfed him, cutting through the darkness. The effort was immense, and Mikey’s body trembled, each pulse of pain a reminder of his limits. His face twisted in agony as he cried out, the intensity nearly overwhelming him. But he wouldn't stop—not until Leo was back.
Mikey’s scream ripped through the air, raw with agony but unwavering in resolve. His body begged for mercy, yet his spirit burned brighter. Every wave of pain became fuel—proof that he would not break.
Suddenly, a portal began to open, tearing through reality in a horizontal arc, glowing with the same golden energy that radiated from Mikey's form. Cracks of light began to spread across his arms as he held the portal steady, but he could feel his Mystic Energy draining fast. His strength was leaving him, and the cracks crept higher, spreading toward his face. He gasped, glancing back at his unconscious brothers. He couldn’t fail them—not after everything. His breath was ragged, and his vision blurred as his body cried out in pain. But Mikey pushed forward. He had to. In the Prison Dimension, Leo lay on the cold floor, weak and barely conscious. The world around him was dark, oppressive. He could feel the weight of defeat pressing down on him. But then, from the corner of his eye, he saw it—a soft, glowing light cutting through the shadows behind him.
Before he could register what was happening, the portal yanked him through. The sensation was overwhelming—he was falling, spinning through space, before crashing down to the ground of their world. Leo landed hard, his vision still hazy as he fought to stay conscious. As his eyes fluttered open, he saw a blurry figure before him—Mikey, glowing bright orange and gold, his hands still stretched out from the effort of creating the portal.
Mikey collapsed to his knees, tears streaming down his face as he looked at his brother. His entire body trembled as he gasped for air, his Mystic energy spent, and the golden cracks on his skin began to grow wider. He could feel himself fading, slipping away, but he didn't care.
He’d saved Leo. That was all that mattered.
Leo, dazed and barely able to process the chaos around him, looked up to his brother. Mikey stood there, tears streaming down his face, yet a fragile smile managed to break through the pain as he reached out to help Leo up. But before Leo could grasp his hand, something unimaginable happened.
The golden cracks on Mikey’s body spread, pulsing and expanding, until his entire form began to shimmer, flickering like a dying flame. His body trembled, pieces of him dissolving into the very energy that had brought Leo back.
Leo’s breath caught in his throat, his heart sinking as he whispered, barely believing what he was seeing. “Mikey...?” His voice was a fragile whisper, a desperate plea, but the sight before him was too much to grasp.
He tried to reach for his brother, but it was too late.
Mikey’s form flickered once more, and just before the light engulfed him entirely, he whispered something, his voice soft and full of love, but it was too quiet for Leo to hear. With one final shimmer, Mikey was gone.
Leo's hand reached out, trembling, toward the empty space where his brother had just been, his mind struggling to comprehend the impossible. The world felt frozen, as if time itself had stopped, leaving only the crushing weight of loss. His heart pounded in his chest, and a cold numbness spread through him, but that was nothing compared to the raw ache that ripped through him when the truth finally hit.
Mikey was gone.
A broken sob tore from Leo's throat as he collapsed to his knees, his voice trembling, desperate. "Mikey... No... No...!" The words felt foreign, too heavy to say, but they escaped anyway, a plea for something that could never come back. His world was shattered, and the emptiness that remained swallowed him whole. He screamed, his voice breaking as he pounded the ground with his fists, grief and rage consuming him. His body shook with sobs as he called out his brother’s name, but the only response was the cold wind and the silence of the battlefield. Donnie and Raph still lay unconscious, unable to help or share in the grief. Leo was alone with the crushing weight of his brother’s sacrifice, and the reality that he was gone forever. The light was gone.
