I think people forget that Stratt amnesticized Grace with the goal that Ilyukina and Yao would be there to help him, y’know NOT DIE, and then THEY DIED before he woke up.

So like she gets the recordings and realizes Yao and Ilyukina are dead before he wakes up so he’s got no pilot, no engineer, and no memories.

And then you also have to remember that the EXISTENCE of these recordings and the fact they were accompanied by the Taumoeba means that an amnesticized Grace somehow managed to save earth without a pilot or engineer and shoddy memory that only vaguely gives him enough to work with as he works.

Like what the fuck man.

I really enjoy the implication that the scientists on Earth in charge of dealing with the Taumoeba allowed Stratt to keep one entire jar of it just… sitting next to her while she watched Grace’s video logs. Her Emotional Support Taumoeba.

I mean, maybe she developed heart problems or something! Maybe she legitimately NEEDS a little jar of alien microbes (with a Post-It of drawn-on glasses and a stupid science pun, to make it tragically clear what the jar is a stand-in for) to keep next to her, in case something in the video logs is distressing enough to cause a medical episode!

The other Taumoeba farms are off in a warehouse under 5 layers of armed guards (with the most vicious and determined security measure being, by FAR, the innermost layer of scientists who are 10000% willing to shank a bitch with their smuggled-in pocketknives and syringes and scalpels if some idiot who wants to sabotage Project Hail Mary in the final stretch actually makes it past all the soldiers with guns). But Stratt gets her own pet container of Taumoeba. As a treat.
