As excited as I am for a new PL game, I’m disappointing that they didn’t just make Flora the protagonist, since she’s already technically Layton’s daughter. Don’t get me wrong, I’m already in love with Katrielle (or however you spell it), but the fact that they invented a totally new character rather than use Flora, who a) had arguably less development than any other main character and thus is ripe with possibilities, and b) already fills the role as “Layton’s child/protege” kinda confuses me.

Let’s think about this from a writing/story perspective. Flora is sheltered and naive, and she’s most comfortable around Layton and Luke, the two people she trusts the most. She wants to tag along on adventures, but Layton is very protective of her. Now, from what I understand, the plot of Lady Layton has something to do with the Professor going missing. 

Now, I’m no writer, and I’m just speaking from what logically makes sense to me, but just imagine Flora in this situation. With Layton missing and Luke out of the picture, Flora has a whole adventure to herself, but also has to rely on herself. She would be able to discover her own talents, travel and discover new things, improve her self confidence, mature as a person, etc. This is quite possibly the best set of circumstances to develop her character, in my opinion.

idk, it’s been a while since I played the original trilogy, so maybe I’m making a big deal out of nothing. I guess it just baffles me that they keep creating Layton’s children from a mystery mother when they already have characters that could grow up and go on their own adventures.
