Internalized oppression and the Goodbye Despair Cast
But before that, a warning! This contains HEAVY SPOILERS for SDR2 and is thus going under the cut. Read if you have already played danganronpa 2 or don't care about spoilers
So, I see a lot of the cast as very neurodivergent or at least are in some way "not normal" in a way that could be considered inconvenient, especially with the idea that Class 77 and Hajime are all "The Dropouts" and the "Problem kids" and I think the way they treat Nagito in particular can be seen as deeply ingrained ableism.
Nagito, in my rewrite, is Autistic and had Schizotypal Personality Disorder. He is mostly untreated in the game proper because, unlike at Hope's Peak proper, he can't get access to the medication he, in particular, needs. All the drug store on the island has is stuff that could be over the counter and, like... hygiene stuff. Not the meds he'd need for his psychological symptoms and he hasn't been officially diagnosed in the period of time he was taken from.
And yes, Nagito is potentially dangerous and can be frustrating to deal with but the way they treat him is a huge reason I say this. They treat him terribly and like a constant threat and Nagito idolizes them so much that he lets them. Because they have unresolved ableism themselves and they kinda let it show with Nagito because he's one of the "bad" mentally ill people. In fact, they also treat Mikan in a pretty ableist way, though differently.
They treat her like something fragile, a doll, the cute, clumsy awkward girl who is useful. Gundham, one of the most autistic-seeming character in this cast, calls Mikan a "slow-witted woman". That's pretty fucked up! That's a pretty fucked up thing to say about someone! Especially a mentally ill person!
And Japan, from my research, has a pretty deep history of ableism and Japanese society is focused on pulling your weight, not being a burden, and keeping the harmony. And the GD cast is a very good example of what that does to young people.
They are ALL victims of the flaws of Japanese society, even under this fictional lense. They are ALL victims of the world around them. Ableism, sexism, racism, abuse, general cruelty and societal pressures... they all have experience in this. The female characters are especially victims of one or more of these issues.
And when you are pushed and abused and treated poorly, you are bound to snap eventually, even if you need one last push to do so. Junko was that push.
All of the remnants of despair, all of Hope's Peak honestly but especially them, were doomed from the start. Doomed by the world they lived in.
Ibuki was loud and unique and was thus ostracized for it, Peko was trafficked as a baby and forced to become a tool, Fuyuhiko was literally born into the mafia, Akane lived impoverished and in a dangerous area while forced to sell her body, Mikan was bullied and abused and people only valued her for what she could do for them, Nagito was mentally and physically ill while being treated like a menace and having no friends or family, Sonia was a princess and was forced to keep a smile on her face and wasn't allowed to feel despair or any negative emotions for the sake of her country, Gundham was an (In my eyes) autistic kid who's sensory issues caused him to be outcasted and pushed away, plus whatever went on with his father, Kazuichi was abused and had his trust taken advantage of and changed himself to be cooler, Teruteru's mother was sick and he had no way to help her plus his siblings probably aren't the best influence on him, Nekomaru was sick all his life and was separated from his peers because of it, Hiyoko was abused and betrayed and nearly killed and neglected to the point of being unable to do basic tasks, Mahiru lived with a deadbeat dad and a mom who was constantly out because of her job, the Imposter has no name, has no home, has no family to call their own, their only means of living were imitating other people and Hajime was crushed by academic pressure and the need to be talented to be worth anything at all...
Is it any surprise that they were vulnerable to Junko's toxic influence? Is it any surprise that they were perfectly willing to tear down the world around them? The world was not kind to them so why should they be kind to the world? And yet they all had good in them, they weren't irredeemable. They did horrible things and they have major flaws but they decided to get better. They chose to divert from the path of despair and they chose to not continue to perpetuate the harm that continued to hurt them.
And DR3 failed their story with that brainwashing thing... the Chiaki thing... the EVERYTHING! They failed the characters that were made because of crunch time. The powerful story it could have been was betrayed by DR3.
The story of the Remnants of despair and I believe Danganronpa as a whole is one of hurt people lashing out at the world around them and each other. Victims lashing out and hurting each other. And the Remnants chose to get better, they chose to put in the work to build back the world they brought down little by little together. It won't be easy but it's the future they chose to make for themselves, their past doesn't define them after all. Only how they choose to move forward. They chose the hopeful, difficult path when it was so easy to stomp on every living thing that breathed and pull them into the depth of despair.
I have thoughts about THH, UDG and V3 too along with how I'd do DR3's despair arc because my rewrite has me in a chokehold tbh. Let me know if that sounds interesting to you!
...Also, this didn't fit anywhere but in my reimagining of danganronpa Chiaki is based on a reserve course student (Aki Nanami) who just so happens to have an interest in video games but she didn't stand out enough to be in the main course mixed with Alter Ego since Aki was Chihiro's cousin but I'm saving that whole story for AO3 LOL

A.K.A Based on that old Hiyoko Saionji death scenario and some edits I saw about it. An AU.
this will be my only tadc take on here because I'm already a little tired of debating in other places and reading a lot of extremely strange comments from everywhere and being fed up with negativity
long essay warning
I can say for sure that a lot of people in this fandom, well, excuse me, literally just didn't understand what the tadc was about
This is not a story about liminal office corridors not about every-episode digital existential crisis, not about C&A and their workings and history not about why and under what conditions tadc cast scanned their brains but about people who are trapped in some completely incomprehensible and alien world. About people who have absolutely nothing in this place except the complete strangers around them, with whom, whether they want it or not, they will have to live and sit in the same boat for god knows how long
This is a series about people's relationships, about their problems, about how they deal with them or try to ignore them until it's too late
I really think that this topic was showed great to us. Yes, you can complain that there is too much Jax, that something was thrown out of the screen, but all the main problems and characters were shown to us quite clearly we understand what they are like and we empathize with them (well maybe someone doesn't lol) And as for me, tadc did great job telling us about these interactions during all these 9 episodes, albeit with some flaws, plot holes and nuances ofc
It really seems to me that there is too much fierce hatred and just unjustified negativity around the finale Hate sells best on the Internet, and hating something is much easier than loving it. And it makes me incredibly sad to see that this hate spreads to those things that I genuinely like
And before you write anything I'm not trying to put your point of view in question and somehow win you over to my side, and all this is written without a single negative to those who just dont like ending and yeah that's it and its also okay to dissagree with me and my words that all the characters are well-written for 9 episodes show
Makoto Naegi is hopelessly average. Average hobbies, average fashion tastes, less-than-average height and physicality, he's definitely does NOT fit in with all these talented people. Still, he was just going go to Hope's Peak and he was going to graduate like it was a normal school, blending into the background and not drawing attention to himself...
Aaaand then he was forced to be the protagonist in a murder mystery story.
Darn.

Summary:
writers, you can and should be proud of your fic even if you personally are not satisfied with it. because even if you think it's "not good", you can be proud of the fact that you wrote it and it's something you created. you can be proud of the fact it's not ai.
repeat after me, it's something you put your soul and dedication in — and that's something ai could never achieve.
I feel like fandom could use a refresher on "canon" vs "word of god".
Word of god: Statements made by the creators about the source material and their intentions regarding it. Can sometimes directly contradict canon due to the author changing their mind or having made a mistake. Word of god is external to the source material.
Canon: The words, images, and sounds that make up the piece of fiction in question. The actual contents of the source material. Canon is internal to the source material.
"Word of god" is essentially the author's own "headcanons" in a way. They are ideas about, and intentions for, the source material that are not included in the canon itself.
Both canon and word of god can be judiciously discarded for any reason in fandom, but it's important not to mix the two of them up.
Proshipper is a term created for people who DON'T CARE ABOUT SHIPS, and that does NOT necessarily mean that they like "problematic" ships. A proshipper can have the same opinion as an Anti, can find a ship disgusting but, guess what, THEY WON'T TELL THAT PERSON TO K!LL THEMSELVES BECAUSE OF A FICTITIOUS COUPLE!
If you don't like a ship, block the tag of that ship and any blog/artist that talks about or supports that ship you hate. And if you really find a problematic ship that can affect reality, report the post and block it immediately.
Nobody, did you hear? NOBODY deserves to be threatened, have their data leaked, or receive cookies with nails in them because of fictional couples.
Fiction doesn't affect reality, it only affects it when it's done with real people or when the act is encouraged in real life OK? Thanks.
