I've been real emotional thinking about this anniversary. Sometimes you can't appreciate the SCOPE of something until you're through it.
The Simon Snow Trilogy followed my two most popular books (from a sales perspective). But THESE three books, and THESE readers, and THIS experience ... It was all completely different.
I'm going to try to share some memories and artifacts all week. But one thing that I've been thinking a lot about is -- Simon Snow readers are special because they have a great sense of humor.
Like, the whole experience of these books for me was really FUN. Even during some truly UN-fun years. Sure, some people were jerks. And some people didn't get it. But, by and large, Simon Snow readers tell the best jokes and laugh at the best jokes. As I was assembling memories for this video, the memes were as important as the art.
Sometimes I'll cross paths with another book fandom, and I'll be struck by how serious and literal and ... weird ... everyone is being.
Thank you for mostly not being weird! Thank you for being funny!
I think funny people are smart people. People who can see absurdity and nuance. Whose brains are nimble enough to really rotate and shake an idea.
You guys were so smart and funny, it allowed me to make the books smarter and funnier and weirder (in a good way!).
After Carry On, I felt like I could really push the characters and push the concept and take narrative risks. I always knew you would get it.

Singlehandedly the worst thing about homestuck becoming a Media Property™ is that it's too big to get away with the blatant disregard for intellectual property it used to be able to when it was just a scrappy experimental webcomic.
idk to me the fact that so many things about it were "stolen" from somewhere else (e.g. the og alternian alphabet being literally just the daedric alphabet from Elder Scrolls flipped 180 degrees) and reused as part of this like massive multimedia pop culture collage was an important part of building its unique identity and atmosphere, and it's something that's conspicuously absent from pretty much every subsequent piece of homestuck media.
Even if the animated adaptation is good it's gonna be mired by the fact that it's not gonna have shit like this unless some exec considers it worth paying to license a bunch of different things from a bunch of other execs.
i was gonna say “wow, they’re really pushing the came back wrong trope because buffy keeps repeating the exact phrase” until i googled and realise the phrase “came back wrong” literally originates from buffy. this show is like the modern shakespeare
in 2004 a thread started on buffistas.org to discuss tropes used in Buffy and other Whedonverse shows. At the time there were no formal names for most tropes so users assigned them names based on the scenes they were discussing. This thread inspired one of the site members to start the website TVTropes.org
Most of the listings on TVtropes were named after scenes and quotes from Buffy the Vampire Slayer
The cheers ringed on his ears as he held the pose for the first song in the show. Lights shining, yet not blinding, showed him the excited faces of the people that likely waited for hours in line to get to the first rows.
Introduction time. His turn. As he waved and spoke his stage name into the mic, he noticed the subtle change of demeanor of the public right away. A little less cheerful. The clapping becoming polite. Some lighticks going down.
It is what he expected. The group had been active for four years, and he just joined for the last album. A replacement for another member, who retired under the guise of a knee injury, though Zen had heard rumors of a dating scandal underneath. He was grateful to V and Rika, who managed to get him a contract with a somewhat famous company. He trained every day, pushing himself to the brink, until they finally gave him this opportunity.

The fan was somewhat crushed in the corner of the first row. They had the lightsick with his name carved on it, the same one that was taken down for not getting enough sales.
They were dressed in pink, his assigned color.
As the other members took their turn to speak, his gaze kept drifting to them, as subtly as he could (he did not need to risk having his own dating scandal so early in his career). It was as if they noticed his gaze every time, showing their radiant smile and waving the stick. During the show, he made an effort to look at that corner often, cheering them on, encouraging them to sing, he even winked at them once.
He was aware thar he had more fans out there. Even Jaehee said that she would come to that show, though she didn't get a good location. But the passion reflected in that fan was something that he had not experienced in person until then. And for the rest of the show, he felt on cloud nine.
He was not sure if he would follow this path for long. He belonged in a stage, that was for sure. He loved to sing, dance, and perform. But somehow he felt like being part an idol group was not his true path.
He had been thinking a lot about musical theater lately, after one of his coworkers starred in one... it was an idea to consider.
He wondered if you would support him then too.
You visited him on his dreams that night. It started out as the concert, but the images quickly changed into some sort of intimacy. He saw himself opening up to you, talking on ghe phone with you often, embracing you... and for some reason, he can swear that there was a bomb too. He woke up with a gasp.
Zen was aware that sometimes his dream could be psychic, though most people didn't believe him. Though he knew that this time, it probably wasn't. He was just infatuated with an enthusiastic fan. If he repeated himself that enough, maybe the warmth on his chest would go away.
His thoughts were interrupted when Seven pointed out that there was another person in the chatroom. His heart beated a bit faster when he saw a picture of his lightsick as their icon.
Perhaps fate can work in mysterious ways, after all.
