actually I think you should be normal about ordinary citizens of authoritarian countries and yes that applies even to that country you're thinking of right now
slavery!!!
hate when a motherfucker says he has dark humor and then it turns out he just means he knows racial slurs

Talking about how censorship is a fascist stuff : few years ago, Swiss painter Miriam Cahn was called out for showing a "cp painting" at Palais de Tokyo (Paris). The accusations were from French far-right associations and movements, the same people pretending to "protect the kids" while they protect predators - especially if they are white males, from nuclear families and members of the Christian church.
Actually, Cahn's painting was about rape as a weapon of war. According to her, the victims weren't kids, they were adultes weakened by hunger and war. However - and it's my opinion as an Art student - the message would have been no less relevant if the victims were kids, because they are also part of the victims, and if we should bé shocked by these kind of content to realize that, so be it.
As much as I hate these kind of content, censorship is the last thing we need, even for some random dark content we see on the internet. Censors don't want your security, censors don't want children's well-being either, they don't care about the victims. They want to silence us.
thank you for sharing
the way i've argued with academics & library workers for a full decade of my adult life that "free speech" does not exist & playing along with reactionaries as if they actually hold any principles beyond supremacy is not going to protect the rights of marginalized people. like people got so up their ass about antifascist organizing & were like "we have to protect fascist speech so that way our speech is protected too."
fascists will never protect you so jot that down
do people not realize how much of a hazard it would be to classify speech as "dangerous or fascist" and then censor it? like this is a very common tactic in ACTUAL fascistic regimes and as soon as the implementation happens, it would get abused and stretched beyond belief. you do have a point though.
A 75 yo man proudly came into the cafe wearing an Ultra Maga hat. I excused my barista from the register to handle the transaction.
"The hat is customizable," he said, struggling with the velcro patch on the front. "If I need it, I have an ICE one too. I pick based off the business i walk into."
"Customizable is an important hat descriptor," I said. "what can I get you?"
"You wouldn't believe how offended people get these days," he said. "And I'm supposed to do something about it if you're offended? You chose to be offended!"
"We all have hundreds of thousands of decisions everyday," I said. I thickened my accent. "That's what my stepdad always said. But I can make one easier - we have a delicious Ethiopian roast available."
"Like if I told you you have a bull ring," he said, "because bulls have rings in their noses. Is that offensive?"
I laughed. "I've heard that before."
"It's a joke, but people get offended. Maybe you're offended."
I looked at him. I smiled. "You aren't trying to offend me though, right?"
Of course he was. I was being friendly and the friendlier I was, the faster he switched topics. He was saying anything inflammatory he could think of to see if I'd take the bait. After about 20 minutes of my redirecting and deescalating, he settled into a more normal interaction. He took up too much of my time showing me a product I'd feigned mild interest in to get him to stop talking about getting accused of inappropriate behavior at work. When we finally disengaged, he spent 10 minutes trying to catch my eye again. When he failed, he left.
There's this new breed of customer who insists on trying to incite political conversation through their clothing and, when that doesnt work, their snide little comments. If I owned my own business, maybe I would have given the guy the fight he wanted. But I work for a corporation and I love paying my bills so I deescalated.
Anyone wearing that type of shit and preying on workers for their own spank bank material is a brainless fucking sheep.
top 10 things that never happened
The Retirement Trap
We've built a culture around this fantasy of a thing called "retirement". In an attempt to actualize it, we are actively sacrificing the blood of the young to sustain life support for the old far past their ability to enjoy most of life's merits. This scheme only works when there is a burgeoning population base. When it has sucked enough life force out of the new generations, the pyramid base itself will naturally shrink. The whole thing will become top-heavy, teeter, and then fall like a jenga tower, collapsing from its own weight, crushing the young base in the collapse' wake. This wasn't how life was meant to be lived. Humanity will pay the price. Much of the developed world is now trapped in this death spiral of sacrificing the next generations to stave off death and its unwelcome effects. Perhaps a fully automated society can stave this off, as new generations are no longer needed to perform most essential tasks to keep a society running. However, human jobs no longer being essential comes with its own can of worms. The existential crisis hits a fever pitch.
Social security will fall in most countries in the near future and we are NOT ready for it
the weapons of mass destruction were actually great but do my kids really need to know about boobies
a person has to have really messed up ideas about childhood development if they think there is an age that a child can be where human breasts are inappropriate for them to see but the fucking A-Bomb is A-Okay

yes, everyone deserves autonomy, which means the farmer's autonomy to choose who he gives his grain to, and if he chooses to give away his grain. food is not a human right. letting a farmer choose what to do with the thing he poured his life into is.
having dpdr is so weird because the large majority of people don't know what it is and it's hard to explain: how i'm seeing eye floaties and tv static all the time, how i kinda don't know anything about myself, my thoughts are disconnected and floating so i hit walls in though because i have to remember what i was thinking about, how i know what happened but don't remember it happening, how i'm losing my memory, how i feel like my mind is a hostage of an ignorant body that won't listen, etc..... :(
"People are not property!" - *loud cheering*
"This includes prisoners! They are not suddenly property of the state when they're convicted!" - *a little less cheering*
"And that includes children who are not their parents' property!" - *almost no cheering*
"What? I thought we said people aren't property?"
well saying children are their parents property isn't reasonable, since from that follows children can consent and a whole myriad of problems
I cannot for the life of me find the OG post, if anyone knows what these accounts are called now I will cry (positive)
please find them
why is it that being a post-leftist means everyone that hears about my political position automatically assumes i'm a communist and then when i say i'm not they go on to say that then i'm a capitalist, and then they claim i can't not be all these things and they basically just don't let you explain and end up just thinking they have a superior political position or smth? also they will just throw straw man jokes around about what you believe.... i should reconsider the people i talk to, because i don't think this is normal behavior tbh, anyways :)
garlic bread is the most universally loved food, that is not generic enough for it to be obvious everyone loves it, but also is specific enough so that it's surprising that all of us love it
i've been reading invisible cities by italo calvino and him naming the cities like women and framing a city as a narrative made up of it's citizens memories, that no matter how small, contribute to the larger story that is a city, has made me understand the dynamic of me and my city as a romantic relationship, and i am all for it :)
