Ok so Iāve been playing for 18 years and iām a string teacher. Can i just say how IMPORTANT it is for young kids to see a BLACK, MALE-PRESENTING PERSON playing, nae, SHREDDING on a violin? Iāve know maybe 5 black people who played stringed instruments throughout my schooling and teaching (predumably because iām an upper middle class white woman). In districts where the population is predominantly black, funding is always low, so the instruments are crappy. Kids quit, or the program is dismantled. Iāve seen very few professional string players who are black.
Obviously there are black string players. We just donāt see them because they ādonāt look likeā string players.
This person is the real deal. They were clearly classically trained, and seems to have some fiddle training as well. How cool is that?

What do you do when you can feel yourself getting bad again?
I reach out to my support network, starting with my wife, and I tell them that I feel like Iām about to go into crisis. Usually, thatās enough to help me stabilize and get through it.
If that doesnāt work right away (and sometimes it doesnāt), Iāll make an appointment to see my therapist or doctor, depending on how the Depression and/or Anxiety are expressing themselves.
If it doesnāt feel like crisis, but it does just feel ⦠bad ⦠I do my best to go through some steps, like a checklist:
Have I taken a shower today?
Have I eaten enough today?
Did I just have coffee today?
Whenās the last time I took a walk, even if itās just up the block?
Have I reminded myself that Depression Lies, and made efforts to make a separation between my mental illness and *me*?
I go through these steps, remind myself that Iāve gotten through the bad times in the past, and then I start doing my best to get toĀ āyesā on those questions. Usually, that helps.
But remember that mental illness isnāt weakness, itās sickness, and sometimes we canāt get well on our own. THAT IS OKAY! That is when we reach out to a professional who can help us get through it.

Anxiety attacks can take different forms, such as:
Unpredictable bouts of rage or irritability
Nit-pickiness (obsessive behavior, which may be a part of OCD), and even a hypersensitivity to disarray, chaos, or any sort of change
Fast-talking, stuttering, stumbling over words
Not talking at all
Sitting rigid, staring into space, almost seemingĀ āzoned outā
Understanding the way our or otherās anxiety works can help to decrease the stigma and help to calm a person faster and get them out of that state. These are just a few, but it gives an idea of the range in which attacks can come.
