An audience member stopped World Science Festival host Jim Holt from speaking over physics professor Veronika Hubeny

From Marilee Talkington’s post:
So, after thinking about this over night, I’ve decided to share something that happened at the WORLD SCIENCE FESTIVAL yesterday afternoon in NYC that changed me. Or rather made me step into who I am in a larger way.
As some on my feed have seen, I was live-feeding the beginning of the panel discussion on FB. That panel was made up of some of the greatest and most famous minds in the world in Inflationary Cosmology, String Theory, Cosmology and Physics based Philosophy. The panel was made up of 5 men and 1 woman. And the moderator was a science writer and journalist for The New Yorker.
In the first hour of the panel discussion you can see clearly, if watching the video, that Veronika Hubeny, the only woman on the panel is barely given any opportunity to speak. And the Moderator, Jim Holt even acknowledges this.
In the last 20-30 minutes of the 90 minute discussion Jim Holt finally pushes the conversation to Hubeny’s field of expertise, string theory, and this is what ensued:
He asked her to describe her two theories of string theory that seem to contradict one another.
And THEN, without letting her answer, proceeded to answer for her and describe HER theories in detail without letting her speak for herself.
We could clearly see that she was trying to speak up. But he continued to talk over her and dominate the space for several minutes.
I should say that this panel was taking place in a large auditorium as it is an extremely high-profile and always sold-out event. And the panel discussion was being live-streamed across the world and they say that millions of people watch these videos after they are made public. (Which they already are).
So at this point, after seeing very clearly that she was not going to be given space to speak and in fact having her own theories described to the audience by the moderator, I am in full outrage. My body is actually beginning to shake. The sexism is beyond blatant. It is happening on stage and NO ONE, not a single other physicist or panelist is stepping in to say anything about it. And I can hear other audience members around me, both men and women becoming more and more agitated with what is happening. Jim Holt, even at one point, asks Veronica a question and she laughs because he has been answering his own questions about her work…and he makes fun of her for ‘giggling’.
So at some point while he is Still talking about Her theories, I just can’t handle it any longer.
With my hands shaking,
I finally say from my seat in the 2nd row of the audience, as clearly, directly and loudly as possible;
“Let. Her. Speak. Please!”
The moderator stops.
They all stop.
The auditorium drops into silence.
You could hear a pin drop.
And then the audience explodes with applause and screams.
Jim Holt eventually sat back, only after saying I was heckling him And he let her speak. And of course, she was brilliant.
———————–
So, the panel discussion ends.
My hands are still shaking. I’m still upset by the incredible sexism that has been demonstrated this afternoon. But I also realize that I just spoke up in an auditorium full of people that are listening to people that are considered gods in the international science world. I was just overwhelmed by it all
We get up to leave.
And then it happens.
Person after person come up to me. Both men and women.
The first woman, right behind me, reaches over and embraces me and says, “Oh my god. what you said was the most important thing that was said all day. Thank you. Thank you.”
And then people start filing out of their aisles and wind their way over to me:
“Was that you? Thank you so much for speaking up. Thank you.”
“Was that you? Oh god, what he was doing was horrific. Thank you. I wanted to do something but didn’t know how”
“Was that you? I wish I had the courage to say something, thank you! Thank you so much”
“Was that you? You said what everyone here was thinking. Look I had even been writing in my notebook what you eventually said (shows me his notebook with ‘let her speak’ written over and over.) But you said it. You said it. Thank you.”
“Was that you? Thank you! I felt so powerless to do anything.”
And on.
So we were all thinking this.
—- So I walked out. And my friend who was sitting about 8 rows behind me, came up to me with a huge grin and said “That was you, wasn’t it? Of course it was. YES!!!!! I will be telling this story for years.”
And the whole time, my hands are still shaking. And I’m felling light-headed. And I just want to scream out into the lobby “WHY IS THIS SEXISM STILL HAPPENING? WHY, does someone like me, with No status in that room, have to be so extraordinarily bold and speak up? And why was it so frightening to do so?”
And I’m thinking. “God, please god let this be an opening for those that were here today and the tens of thousands that watched the live-streaming of the panel yesterday and the hundreds of thousands that will watch the video this year- to speak up when we see this happening. And please let me not be afraid to do this again …and again …and again” Because it was scary.
Please keep giving me courage.

Hello! So not to be rude, but I would prefer that TERFs didn't interact with my posts. It makes me uncomfortable as I am trans myself^^Again, no disrespect to you, but please don't interact with my posts in the future
Don’t post them on a public platform then
Pardon? I don't think I deserve you being inconsiderate in return for my patience. If someone says not to interact, don't interact. Simple.
You know what I do when I have something I want to write down and don’t want people not interacting with it? I put it in my journal; I don’t post it on social media for everyone to see and interact with. You can’t tell me what to not interact with on a public platform.
I fucking wrote that prayer, I don't give a single fuck if you want to reblog it. You don't support my people's EXISTENCE on this planet, I have a right to tell you not to interact with my content.
Me stating reality doesn’t erase your existence, stop being so dramatic. You don’t have a right to tell me to not interact with shit; you posted it online for anyone to see and interact with. Deal with it or put it in a journal
This is the kind of behavior that disillusioned me with TERF ideology; the complete lack of compassion for other human beings.

“If a girl is lucky enough to receive any sex education, she will be taught the biological basics. She’ll learn that men have penises and testicles and produce sperm and women have vaginas and uterii and produce ova. She’ll learn that when a man and a woman have sex, the man inserts his penis into the woman’s vagina until he ejaculates. She’ll learn that the semen in the ejaculate will render her vulnerable to pregnancy so she will have to protect herself by using a hormonal or a barrier contraceptive. Hormonal contraception is preferable because barrier methods such as condoms, while safer for women, apparently reduce sensation for men which is obviously a no-no. It’s much better that a woman take a pill every day for her entire reproductive lifespan, or get a painful injection every 12 weeks, or have a copper rod inserted into her uterus, or a silicone rod implanted into her arm. She probably won’t learn that 3 out of 4 women never orgasm from vaginal intercourse. She almost definitely won’t learn how women do achieve orgasm. She’ll learn her place as a receptacle.”

Lore’s gaze fixed on the quiver strapped to the goddess’s back-the one held in place with a strap not of worn leather, but of braided human hair. All different colors and textures, all sticky with blood and flecks of scalp”

BRO!!! I KIND OF LOVE THIS DONT COME FOR ME!!! I LOVE SCARY GRUESOME ARTEMIS!!
Every woman starts off as an anti-feminist.
Every woman.
Every woman starts off believing in misogynist things.
Every woman prioritizes males.
Every woman serves male interests and believes in gender roles.
Every woman.
Until she actively learns not to.
It’s an active conscious process.
And most women never break through.
So everyone you know who doesn’t have the normative view, once did.
They transcended it.
And they already know everything you can possibly say about the topic,
because they once believed in the same things.

I might as well do a hint of my thoughts here before I go and set things square on Oprah 🤔😜🤷🏼♀️ !!!!!

Okay, so, I’m here today to answer all of your guys’ questions. And the first main question that you guys have been asking me is, “What am I going to do now that the conversatorship’s over with?” Very good question.
Well, let’s see, I’ve been in the conservatorship for 13 years. It’s a really long time to be in a situation you don’t want to be in. So, I’m just grateful honestly for each day and being able to have the keys to my car, and being able to be independent like a woman… owning an ATM card and seeing cash for the first time, being able to buy candles. It’s the little things for us women, but it makes a huge difference. And I’m grateful for that, you know? It’s nice; it’s really nice.
But I am not here to be a victim. I lived with victims my whole life as a child. That’s why I got out of my house, and I worked for 20 years, and worked my ass off! I’m here to be an advocate for people with real disabilites and real illnesses. I’m a very strong woman, so I can only imagine what the system has done to those people. So, hopefully, my little story… hopefully, my story can make an impact and make some changes in the corrupt system.
And the #FreeBritney movement: you guys rock! Honestly, my voice was muted and threatened for so long and I wasn’t able to speak up or say anything. And because of you guys and awareness, and kind of knowing what was going on, and delivering that news to the public for so long… you gave awareness to all of them. Because of it, I think you guys honestly saved my life in a way, 100%.
And I know there’s a lot of jokes about the #FreeBritney movement. “We’re not free; we’re expensive!” Okay, birdies, I’m expensive too!
But, anyways, with that said, let’s move forward. God bless you all. Everyone have a good year, a good Christmas, and rock on!

It’s reading things like this that makes me uncomfortable watching nudity on TV shows and film. When young actresses or actors go nude, are they actually okay with it or is it a situation of feeling compelled to do it. Emilia Clarke only revealed how uncomfortable she was after GOT and her character became massive and she didn’t have to hide it anymore.
The film and TV industry is so predatory with folks like Noel Clarke abusing their power over young actresses/actors just entering the industry, that hopefully more and more people like Kaya coming forward with their experiences can help change how things work and this encourages more people to out similar predators in the industry.
wow millennials are glued to their i-phones and laptops so much they cant even be bothered robbing in person anymore!!! maybe these trust fund babies should stop phishing credit cards while sitting on their butts and go out there and put some elbow grease into their thievery!
I know exactly what happened. Because it happened to me.
I trained for years to be a con artist. I told my friends and family that I wanted to be a magician, but that was just a cover for why I was constantly practicing sleight of hand.
In junior high and high school, I would shop lift a bunch of candy on my way to school, sell it to kids at the morning break, and use that money to run a crooked poker game at lunch.
Finally, when I was 19 or 20, I felt I was ready, and I picked my first pocket. I was on the bus, bumped a guy as I passed down the aisle, got his wallet, super clean.
In the wallet was several hundred dollars. A huge first score, I had been hoping for a couple twenties. I sat there looking at the, like, 400 bucks, thinking.
That was my rent at the time. We were both on the bus. It was likely his rent too. Lord knows the only reason to carry that much cash on the bus is you’re on your way to pay a bill. We were both on the bus, you know? That’s not someone I was comfortable stealing from.
I tapped him on the shoulder and told him “hey i think you dropped this” and gave it back to him with all the money still in it. It was the first and last time I ever picked a pocket.
Picking a rich person’s pocket is a loosing game. They probably have credit cards and not cash, those credit cards probably have the best anti-theft measures their bank can provide, and you probably can’t get close enough to those people to pick their pockets unless you’re already rich yourself.
The people who’s pockets you can reliably pick are the people around you. The people who are also on the bus, who are in this same shitty situation with you.
As wealth inequality becomes more drastic picking pockets has very clearly become “stealing from other poor people” and it’s not satisfying. I want to steal from Google and Apple and Fox and Facebook and General Mills and Hershey and Tesla. Not the person next to me.
Wow. This post went from funny to a life lesson in a way I wasn’t expecting, amd I’m not sorey at all.
See, unlike the capitalist elite, common criminals have a sense of morality and empathy.
Anti war activist Harvey Milk. That Harvey Milk. Cool cool cool cool cool
Fun fact. Harvey milk was dishonorably discharged from the military for being gay. Years after his death, the military sought to make amends and change the status of his discharge, however, Harvey Milk’s family refused. They preferred that Harvey’s dishonorable discharge stay on record indefinitely so no one would forget the military’s history of discrimination.
Tips on shaving your head
I’ve covered here why it’s a good idea to shave your head, and now on for some practical tips.
Make sure that you’re in a place where you feel safe being naked for a few minutes; there’s going to be hair everywhere and the easiest way to avoid finding them for days is to be naked and have a vacuum cleaner or a brush at the ready to gather your hair.
I usually give myself buzzcuts in the bathroom. I first make sure that I have everything ready (hair clippers, shampoo, vacuum cleaner) before I start, and that the floor is dry (wet floor = mess of sticky hair). If you can, pre-heat the room beforehand so you’re not shivering. If you’re shaving your head for the first time, it can take a while, so remember to have a glass of water on the side in case you get thirsty.
When it comes to cutting lengths, here are a few pointers:
Take what I’m saying with a grain of salt if your hair is super curly and thick, as I have moderately curly and very fine hair;
Anything under 3mm is going to catch fibers (from your pillow cases, from your beanies, …);
1mm is fun;
3 to 5mm is heaven to rub your hand in and is short enough that you can’t grab your hair;
Anything above 7mm feels already too long to me but if you have curly hair, it might work nicely for you;
There are two ways to proceed if you want to shave your head for the semi-long term (i.e. more than just once): you can either go super short all at once and adapt the length between shaves and your cutting lengths as you go; or you can start small (says more than 10mm, or 9mm) and gradually lower the cutting length as you maintain your buzzcut. I used to give myself a 5mm shave every week; now I go for 3mm weekly; but sometimes I will do a 1mm shave just for the fun of it, or I will let a few weeks go by and not shave in the interval. Just remember that you can always cut shorter, but you can never put back what was shaved! Also your hair regrow fast when it comes to buzzcut, so no need to worry too much.
When it comes to the cutting itself, I usually start with the back of my head, going up, on one side then on the other, and I finish with the top of my head. Often, you have a spot or a line on your head where the hair implantation is a bit weird and messy : attack this part of your hair from all sides and don’t be afraid to pass multiple times.
To tell if you’re done, you can look at your head in the mirror, or you can rub your head (vigorously at first to get rid of the hair and then skimming the top of your hair with your palm to tell if you have a regular surface), or you can listen to the sound of the clippers (with use, you’ll be able to tell when the clippers are cutting hair or not: you’re done when you’re not cutting any hair anymore).
Be careful around you ears; do this in the very end, without the comb guide, and try not to nick your ears!
Once you’re over with the cutting, clean up the hair but don’t go roaming around your place, jump into the shower. You can usually rinse the guide and the blades with water; if you do so, remember to let them air dry after you’ve toweled them.
Make sure you have a beanie for windy, rainy or cold days. If you have a sensitive or damaged scalp, consider oiling your head (I use olive oil) and wrapping it in a scarf for the night. Your hair won’t be oily (because they are so short) and your skin will feel less itchy.
Good luck with yout haircut!
