this post is great bc I usually work in an office, which, to a casual observer, is just a quiet room where lots of people sit in silence and work, right? wrong, because at the office, in that “quiet” room, I have to deal with:
the distant chatter of people in the hallways or across the room
the hushed chatter of people near me as they have conversations
people standing directly behind my chair if they have to discuss something with a neighbour
people standing up and doing stretching exercises regularly in my peripheral vision
air conditioning switching on and off, causing changes in temperature and making humming noises
people wearing perfume or body spray
people eating and drinking at their desks near me
people taking their lunch break in the room and talking
people gathering their bags to get up and leave for their lunch break or to go home at the end of the day
and all of these things are absolutely excruciating! I’ve had to leave the room multiple times just to sit in the bathroom and cry because of how overstimulated I am!
I’ve been working from home for the past year because of covid and I cannot express how much more relaxed I feel and how much easier it is to get my work done without the constant sensory overload. I just cannot function well in an environment like that with so many little things going on in the background
