ok, so this is the big phantom thing i was doing!!! i made this as a gift for @soignante

it is my favorite scene from her modern AU Phantom fic “Kintsugi”, amazing brown skin Christine surprises Erik, performing one of his original compositions, and while i was reading i was like “omg, i can’t even…”. I love this, i love this fic, it is my favorite fic ever, i just had to make this, and i had a lot of fun. i hope the phandom enjoy this, and that you will read it.

So I hear you want Leroux compliant fics?

Well, well, well.

Okay, to start, check out this community on FFN, Purely Leroux, theres a decent collection there, but the most recent one is from 2009 or so, and a lot of good ones have been posted since. So start there. Check out the Community section for Phantom of the Opera, there’s a lot of good compilations of similar fic in all different themes, you’ll definitely find something you like.

Then read everything by Quiet2885 and Kryss LaBryn, they write almost entirely Leroux compliant. My particular favorites are Gifts and Wrappings and Sherry (this one is a strong M though, read the warnings). Quiet writes a lot of longer fics, but most are modern.

Now you specifically asked for long to moderate length. Not honestly all that many of those but a couple good ones are:

If you tell me what you like I can dig up some more, I’ve read everything Leroux because I’ve been reading POTO fanfic since 2004, and I used to be such a Leroux snob I wouldn’t even read fics where Christine was brunette. (don’t you judge me, I’m much better now)

Can we talk about the fact that Raoul didn’t believe Christine about the Phantom until Christine started singing about how “his voice filled her spirit with a strange sweet sound” and “in that night there was music in her mind, and through music her soul began to soar, and she heard as she’d never heard before” and “his pleading eyes” and then suddenly right at that moment Raoul decides to lock it down (even though it was an absolutely horrible time for a proposal and he did not appear to have gotten a ring ready at the time), AND is like “the Phantom is totally real and I’m gonna beat the shit out of that motherfuckin bastard”… So for anyone who things Christine didn’t have a thing for the Phantom, her own fiancé might disagree with you there…

It’s funny, but in all the versions I’ve seen this far, Raoul always seems to think that Christine hides a deeper love for the Phantom.

-In the book, he tells her numerous times that she loves him, but that she is in denial.

-In the 1990s miniseries, Phillipe (Raoul, whose name was change for that of his brother for this particular adaptation), is really uncomfortable/mad/sad when Christine and Erik perform “Faust” together

-2004 Raoul is about to cry during PoNR

Conclusion: either Raoul was able to see right through Christine, to a point where even she herself did not dare to look (“the place where the sins hide”, just to paraphrase her own words), or he was just really insecure that an ugly basement weirdo would win her heart first.

I tucked the ID away, cursing angrily in the next moment when we got caught in the middle of a bottlenecked construction site. By then, the flow of traffic was almost nonexistent. All movement had essentially stopped; had I been more focused, I wouldn’t have taken the usual route home.

"No." She gasped, in response to this. There was another long moment of nothing but the silence, only it was punctuated by the occasional echo of dripping water somewhere in the distance. "I will not let you go until you swear on your life that you will not return."

"I won’t return, as long as you do not harm Christine Daae." He seemed to be satisfied with that.

She looked up to see him holding out a hand, as if waiting for something.

It’s from a rough draft of chapter 2 and will likely change by the time I upload it. I don’t have enough polished work to post yet.

I can’t believe I’m about to unleash something from a rough draft on the world, as it goes against my writerly instincts of “YOU WILL NEVER SEE ANYTHING FROM MY ROUGH DRAFTS! NEVER, I TELL YOU!” *sighs and poses against the wall dramatically*
