FIRST OF ALL: What OP said.

SECOND OF ALL: I really hate how he flies! Compared to his stiff movements on the ground, he flies completely loosely and whimsical; barely even trying to focus on not fucking crashing and adjusting to his prosthetic; honestly doesn’t even look like he needs his prosthetic with this design choice and how he moves in this scene! The whole point of his tail fin besides balance and steering is to also keep him stable in flight but here his whole tail is swinging around behind him, like realistically his tail would hit against one of those seastacks if not himself! The whole point of the movie was to help him fly again, not turn him into a joyride! Like op pointed out, Hiccup isn’t even all that phased by this. Like hello you’re human! You dropped your cheat sheet! You shouldn’t be happy going through this either. You too should be focused or panicking before locking in trying to prevent you and your friend from dying! Just the whole atmosphere, the tension, the pacing: it’s all ruined. It makes it seem like Hiccup just knows exactly what position to shift the fin to where as in the original it was all spontaneous with Toothless, making it out of the stony death trap by sheer luck all by putting trust and confidence in each other.

How the f*ck did they screw up this badly?! Everything about this looks so wrong and unnatural! Like, with some of the previous clips, there were maybe a few good attributes. But this?! There is nothing good about this! I get that it's not the full clip, and it cuts to the end, but still! That doesn't excuse how bad this looks!

And when you watch the OG in comparison, the LA becomes almost painful.

Ripped: Epilogue

Last year, the day after Thanksgiving on vacation in London, I went on a Jack the Ripper tour, thinking it would be a fun, goofy adventure, but instead it planted the seeds for the first time I ever made plot work on purpose. This has been so much fun and I’m so grateful for how involved so many of you lovely people has been, it has made something that I took on with a lot of personal rigor doable.

“You were short on rent. Again,” Snotlout leans against the doorframe of Hiccup and Astrid’s shared bedroom, arms crossed, and Astrid rolls her eyes, pausing halfway through trying to tie Hiccup’s tie to answer him.

“No, I’m not, I told you I’m not paying for half of your NFL package.”

“You watch it too!” He insists and she pats Hiccup on the chest, wordlessly assuring him that she’ll be back focused on his nervous expression soon.

“That’s because you sit on the remote,” she reminds him, “I’m not paying for it.”

Over the last 9.5 months, I have looked forward to, and loved, each and every chapter of this story and been so happy that @tysonrunningfox decided to share it with the world. From the choice of Astrid as protagonist, to the exceptional world building, the mysteries at the heart of the action, and the on-point characterization, this story has been such an absolute pleasure to read! It is so well-written and addresses some of the most important aspects of what it means to be an adult, without ever feeling like it was trying to be edgy or dark, instead drawing forth intense (positive and negative) emotions, that, from my perspective, felt well-earned. Also, as a shameless Hiccstrid shipper, this was such a lovely portrayal of their relationship!

I am admittedly going to miss getting new updates (which often seemed to happen right around my bed time and resulted in audible gasps of excitement and the internal struggle over whether I should read it right away or wait until I’d finished the following day’s tasks.) and seeing so much love for it posted on my dashboard, but even more than the sadness of finishing a well-loved story is the happiness of having a well-loved story be concluded so well and the knowledge that said story can be returned to in the future. This is definitely a story that I will be rereading for years to come.

@tysonrunningfox, I hope you feel so happy and proud of what you accomplished, and thank you for what you have given this fandom!

I am so utterly blown away by this response, thank you so much. I particularly want to thank you for saying that Ripped has a theme of dealing with adulthood because that was actually a major goal of mine. I kind of referred to Ripped, at least to myself, as millennial friends with serial killers, I definitely wanted it to feel like people were in their mid-twenties and doing their best with no real knowledge on how to do that.

Like, I love How to Train Your Dragon 2 and 3, but there really is something about the first film that neither of its sequels quite captures.

There’s really nothing like the original, in any set of films.

With HTTYD, I think a lot of it is the entire film’s ambiance of quiet, wordless introversion that is never quite replicated in either sequels or the TV show.

I like how limited it is. Just this one kid and his little island. It’s really focused on intimate conflicts, between Hiccup and himself, his friends, and his family rather than Big External Battles (even though there are sick big battles). The story is told in a really rich but subdued way that let’s you experience the details of the conflicts instead of just telling them to you. A lot of the significant scenes have little to no words. Because it’s so limited you can really worm your way into this kid’s life and feel like you’re a part of all of it, which makes it matter more than something broader and shallower in my book.

“We’ve told you like ten times,” Hiccup leans his head on his hand, swirling the glass of the clear alcohol he doesn’t really trust and wishing he were somewhere else.

“Since when have you denied an excuse to tell some long-winded story?” Snotlout rolls his eyes and Astrid nods, quietly agreeing even though her eyes are worried.
