one genre of fanfiction that seems to have mostly disappeared since i became an adult is shenanigans-type fics. like not exactly crack but just "the gang goes to 7-11" type, extremely low-stakes plot stories. the beach episodes of fanfiction. i just feel like i don't see those around so much anymore. whered they go. i miss them :(

The importance of his doctorate in molecular biology aside, the way in which Ryland Grace approaches an alien life form with curiosity, compassion and kindness is indicative of his lived experience as a teacher in a middle school.

It is one thing to be able to teach effectively, and another to manage a variety of different individuals needs while maintaining engagement. Every skill that Grace uses in his meeting of Rocky, and building a relationship with him, whether he remembers or not, are skills a good educator and mentor uses.

To not assume ill intent. To approach first with curiosity. To explain difficult concepts in a palatable way without condescension or malice. To empathize with one's situation and acknowledge how it may shape one's responses. To exercise patience. To adapt and shift gears in the face of uncertainty. To remain calm in the height of stress and remain a leader.

Grace as a scientist yes, but as a teacher, maintaining an openness to not only work with Rocky, but to also embrace his differences and utilize his strengths to find creative solutions that benefit both of them.

History is fraught with disputes and wars driven by ignorance and sustained by fear of unique cultures and experiences that are different to our own. It is practically in our DNA to reject or fear that of which is different to us, and so it is not weak to trust or to be kind. It is harder to be these things, because the opposing forces come so effortlessly.

Grace's inclination toward 'flight' instead of 'fight' is not an indicator of weakness. It is preservation. It is learned behavior. To take a step back, recalibrate and approach again. You do not win students over by being a fearless dictator. You win them over by treating them like people, and acknowledging where you yourself have room for growth. Ryland Grace is a coward for many reasons that define his narrative, but being trusting and kind are not among them.

Humanity owes its salvation to Ryland Grace the middle school teacher.

Bradley is asexual, and he's open about it, though mostly it's just him reiterating that "he's not interested" whenever his fellow aviators make comments.

Jake has known Beadley for over ten years, and despite Not Knowing The Lingo, he's gotten the message: Bradley Bradshaw does not have sex. Further clarification after a drunk night out: he is repulsed even by the thought of it.

He takes that to mean he doesn't have relationships, because to Jake, they come together.

He learns the difference eventually, but continues to keep Bradley firmly in the NAH category, because Jake fucking loves sex and he's just not interested in being in a relationship without it.

Except... Jake realises he and Bradley are compatible in ways he's never been with anyone else. They talk for hours, once, about everything and anything, a quarter sniping and bantering, a quarter the most delving psychological shit, and half utter nonsense that's still the most invested he's been in a conversation.

Bradley loves cooking but hates cleaning, Jake doesn't know shit about the kitchen but keeps everything spotless.

Bradley gets invited to the Seresin house alongside the Daggers and somehow his nieces and nephews don't even remember anyone else — they're all just obsessed with Bradley.

The worst thing is, everyone starts to see they're perfect for each other, too. Javy starts making comments and Nat starts making Shovel Talk Is Coming eyes at him and Admiral Kazansky Nods at him once and Mav seems to hate him more than ever.

There is no Big Moment, at the end of the day. Bradley doesn't nearly die during a mission, forcing Jake to realise how much he needs him. It's just all of them hanging out as a group, Bradley doing the UGLIEST honk laugh at a joke Jake has made that no one else finds funny, and Jake realises he wants a relationship with Bradley more than he wants a relationship with sex. That he has his right hand, and his left, and his goddamn foot if that's what it takes, but at some point in his life intimacy has become talking for hours and someone who always laughs at your jokes rather than sex.

And because Jake has no impulse control and no shame, he asks Bradley out then and there, in front of God and every asshole who will never let him live it down.

Grace hunches in and says, "Guess I was bullied a lot growing up, haha-" Carl cuts in. "So was I." Grace: "What? Really?" Carl pops Skittles in his mouth as he replies, "I grew up fat and black, I got my fair share of shit. Sure, it got to me, but I came around to the idea that those teenage dipshits were wrong about me. What's your excuse, man?"

Grace says uncomfortably, "I never- Uh. I, well-" Carl looks very unimpressed and says, "See? You're doing it again. Say what you mean to say." Grace slumps. "I guess I never thought about it that way." Carl: "Yeah. I know. That's why I said it. Get out of your own damn way."

We see the first panel in color: Grace floating outside the Hail Mary, surrounded by the red glow of Astrophage, as Carl says, "And once you do that? Hoo, man. You'll be unstoppable."

Back to black and white, Grace smiles emotionally and says, "Thanks, Carl." Carl stands up to leave and points at his paper. "Remember, Stratt wants that report by end of day." Grace hunches again and scowls, "Thank you, Carl." End ID]

what i love about the top gun movies is that the plot is very much Contained. you have all these characters and you only know a few key facts about them (at best) and then Nothing Else.
