St. Louis City, MO • Turns OFF Recycling for Dense Urban Area
August 15, 2025
Due to the compact nature of city living, recycling was provided in the back alleyways of STL in big blue bins for decades. Unfortunately, constant mistakes throughout the years have led to the termination of these recycling rights.
$3k sign on bonus but ultimately an unlivable wage (St. Louis 2024), sanitation workers have high turnover rates in this city. No one to fill necessary shifts, a need for overtime on already exhausted individuals, and trash just left to pile up in the street. People started using the recycling bins as overflow - leading to large rates of contamination on an already stressed and ineffective system.
I am assuming that in order to avoid contamination fees, the city then granted individual sanitation truck drivers the authority to spot a nasty, contaminated recycling bin and collect it for the landfill instead. Citizens then saw this behavior and became disengaged from recycling due to thinking their efforts were not being dutifully respected. So why even bother to sort their items?
Now, the city has terminated alleyway recycling bins point blank. The big blue bins will be no more. They’ve increased drop off locations, and have plans for access within 1 mile from every home. But what about those who can’t or don’t want to do that?
There is now a gap in the refuse market of St. Louis City.
I would like to one day be able to fill that gap. How does one even start to go about a thing like that?
I’m not even mad at Cara Spencer, although I can see why if people are. I support being outraged at this situation. However, this is not a good recycling system and must be rejected and replaced. A new one must grow in its place. We will see if Cara ends up supporting such an endeavor if a good enough one can be presented to STL. Here’s to hoping for good things to come.

Alley Spring, MO
Alley Spring pumps out 81 million gallons of spring fed water into the Jacks Fork river every single day. caves bro, this area got caves. and minerals. caves and minerals.
It is located in the southeast region in the state of Missouri, USA. Jacks Fork is one of two rivers protected by the Ozark National Scenic Riverways.
The Ozark National Scenic Riverways (ONSR) protects both the Current and Jacks Fork rivers. It just so happens to be the first federally protected riverway system in the United States, established in 1964.
Thank god.
The ONSR is managed by the National Park Service. The photo below refers to it as "the nation's first river based national park."
