I think ao3 is literally the only site where no censorship means no censorship. you can post the most vile things on there — things that will get taken down on any other platforms — and ao3 will protect you, your works, and your rights to create whatever you want, however you want.

and no, this isn’t me saying “write that messed up, disgusting thing” because while, yes, write it if it’s what you want (I myself enjoy writing dark fics, something I believe would be considered “vile” to a lot of people), this is me saying in a world of censorship and capitalism, ao3 really is a treasure.

It's hard to have conversations about representation in fandom (and specifically the lack of female main characters) without resorting to going I personally would like to be able to find more stories about women but it is also extremely frustrating how hard it is to find stories about female characters, even in fics that they are tagged in.

If I look at the top 100 kudosed Marvel fics tagged with Natasha Romanov (the 4th most tagged Marvel character and top tagged female character), generously, one of those fics may be about her--but in reality it's probably more about Peter Parker, I just can't tell without reading it. It takes 171 fics to find one that seems to be definitively (sort of) about Natasha Romanov, and it's a Boku no Hero Academia fic with Natasha being reborn as Bakugou Katsuki. It takes another 141 fics after that to find a second fic that is actually about her, and it's a Harry Potter crossover. The next fic about her, 110 fics later, is another Harry Potter crossover.

In all, looking through the top-kudosed Marvel fics tagged with Natasha Romanov, it took 893 fics to find one that wasn't a crossover that actually centers her. Not her as an outside POV about male character, but actually focusing on her.

I have no idea how many more it would take before I would find the next one.

In so many fandoms (and it's worse in popular fandoms just due to the sheer number of fics), it is really hard to find fics that actually center female characters, even when looking at fics that those female characters are tagged in.

I want to be able to read about female characters! I want there to be enough fics about major female characters in major media that I don't have to spend half an hour scrolling through (in this case) 45 pages of fics to find one that is actually about them.

It's so frustrating.

There are 151,521 Marvel fics tagged with Natasha Romanov, and there are 694 Marvel fics tagged with Natasha Romanov-centric. I don't take this ratio to mean a ton--it's not a universally-enough used tag to get any great meaning from its use.

Looking at the top 20 most-kudosed Marvel fics tagged with Natasha Romanov-centric, we have a Natasha is reborn in Game of Thrones fic, at least one Natasha-bashing fic, four fics that are also Tony Stark-centric, and a Jason Todd-centric fic.

So even in fics ostensibly about her, at least a quarter of the 20 I'm looking at also center male characters.

I hate how reading or writing about female characters is treated as a chore, or "eating your vegetables" or something that someone would only do because someone like me is pestering them into doing it.

I hate that seeing fics with no major female charaters is normal, that female characters in fanfiction are often given less agency and less interest and less narrative weight than they are in the original media. I hate that people cite the misogyny of original media to excuse writing things that exclude or erase or demonize female characters that actually appear and do interesting things in the original media, as though their choice to scrub femaleness off of media is the fault of the original media.

I hate that when I do write fics focusing on female characters, I inevitably get readers popping up out of the woodwork to try to recenter on male characters.

I hate that the solution to wanting to read about female characters seems to be to spend all of your time hunting for the dregs, or to switch fandoms, and switch fandoms again, and switch fandoms again, or to leave fandom altogether.

I try to talk about this in terms of the importance of representation, in terms of data, in terms of those less emotional things, but sometimes I am just so frustrated.

realizing their social battery is drained, but they still crave time with the other and want them around

or that they should be tired/drained, but aren't, not while the other is around

catching themselves scanning rooms for the other upon entering

and the small moment of relief when they're there

the small feeling of victory when they get the other to smile

unconsciously adopting their mannerisms—a particular phrase, habit, etc

listening to music and thinking of them, then having their brain catch up and question why that is
