i always marvel at the footage they find for these documentaries. there’s an absolutely extraordinary piece in the tony blair story, presumably from 1994, of tony blair being interviewed by a panel of three people about his suitability for the position of leader— one of those people being alastair campbell. ‘have you really thought through the effect of the job you’re about to take on, assuming you get it, upon yourself and your family?’ and ‘you’ve decided it’s worth living with, assuming that you can become prime minister?’ asks the man who is about to throw himself so hard into helping his interviewee achieve and then maintain that goal that he will nigh on destroy himself, and his partner will think of it as an extramarital affair
