Hubris - Short Story Series: Ch.2 - Land of the Dead
Chapter Two: Land of the Dead
As the creature spoke, my mind raced to comprehend the situation. The underworld? Was this some sort of dream or hallucination? But the cool, slick marble beneath my fingers felt all too real. "I must be dreaming," I muttered to myself, trying to rationalize the situation. The creature chuckled, a sound that sent shivers down my spine. "Oh, you are not dreaming, mortal. You have been brought here for a purpose." I took a step back, my heart pounding in my chest. "Brought here? By whom? For what purpose?"
The creature's eyes seemed to glow in the dim light of the chamber. "You have been chosen by the gods to undertake a quest. A quest that will determine the fate of both the mortal realm and the underworld." I shook my head, unable to fully comprehend what was happening. "I don't understand. Why me? What could I possibly do? “The creature raised a hand, and a shimmering portal appeared before us. "Step through this portal, and all will be revealed." I hesitated, fear and curiosity warring within me. Finally, curiosity won out, and I stepped through the portal.
On the other side, I found myself standing on a vast, ethereal plane. Before me stood a figure unlike anything I had ever seen. She was radiant, her skin glowing with a soft, golden light. Her eyes were pools of wisdom, and her presence filled me with a sense of peace. "Greetings, mortal," she said, her voice like a gentle breeze. "I am Ishtar, goddess of love and war. What's your name, mortal? Speak?!” I gulped with hesitation before I stuttered, “I'm... My name is Ember Sorenson.” As I uttered my name, the air around me seemed to shimmer with a warm, golden light. Ishtar's eyes widened, and a soft smile played at the corners of her lips.
"Ember Sorenson," she repeated, her voice now a melodic blend of curiosity and intrigue. "A fitting name for one with a spirit as fiery as yours. Tell me, Ember Sorenson, what brings you to seek an audience with a goddess?" Caught off guard by the revelation about my fiery spirit, I stammered, “I, uh… I wasn’t seeking an audience exactly. I was... well, I was brought here.” Ishtar’s smile remained, but a knowing glint entered her eyes. “Brought here, you say? By whom and for what purpose?” My encounter with the chilling creature in the underworld flashed before my eyes. I recounted the experience, the creature’s words about a quest and the fate of two realms hanging in the balance. As I spoke, Ishtar’s expression turned thoughtful, the amusement fading. “The creature spoke of a quest, you say,” she murmured, stroking her chin. “This is most unusual. Quests of such magnitude are rarely bestowed upon mortals.”
A flicker of hope ignited within me. Perhaps the goddess wouldn’t send me back to face whatever dangers awaited. “Then you don’t believe the creature?” I sighed with an exalted breath. Continuing my speech I stammered “S…So there’s no quest, no threat to me back at home?” Ishtar’s gaze held mine and she chuckled “There is always a threat, Ember. The balance is a delicate one. But the nature of this quest in particular is a mysterious one. Perhaps me and that creature need to have a word.” Intrigued, I leaned forward. “What does this mean? Do you know of the creature?” She shook her head. “The denizens of the underworld are not ones I often commune with, but their motives can be… what’s a good word for it… Ah! I know, um, shrouded by shadow and deceit.”
A tremor of fear ran down my spine. If even a goddess could not guarantee the creature’s honesty, what was I seriously getting myself into? The weight of the creature’s words still resonated within my soul. Could I truly ignore the potential destruction of both worlds? Taking a deep breath, I slowly met Ishtar’s gaze. “So what do you ask of me, Ishtar? If the creature is lying, why am I really here?” Ishtar let out a hearty laugh. “Perhaps, Ember, the truth lies not in why you are here, but in what you possess that makes you the chosen one.”
