Personne n'aime le jour comme l'aveugle
the other day one of my students asked me if i was 'into musicals'. anyway here's a crop of a wip i've had sitting open in photoshop for a year and a half.
Stanley Kassa as Enjolras from the French production of Les Mis at the Théâtre du Châtelet.
An autobio comic for a Les Mis zine I’m making that collects some LM comics and art I’ve made.
Imagine you invite your roommate to hang out with you and your lefty anarchist friends and everyone’s having a great time until roommate starts talking how cool Bill Clinton was and how awesome the American military industrial complex is and how great it is that the American military is present in every country and now you’re the guy who brought the neoliberal to the anarchist meeting and also this guy has never once paid you rent.
Similar thing happened to my good pal Courfeyrac Les Misérables
I think enjolras is a Creature
reject modernity (enjolras actors in any way acknowledging enjoltaire) embrace tradition (“I remember thinking of talking to Aaron about the subject as we started filming, and as I was about to talk to him he was interrupted by someone else, and then suddenly I understood. That was the perfect example of what the dynamic between us should be. And I realised that actually NOT talking to Aaron about it at all was the perfect way to create that subtextual thing between Grantaire and Enjolras. And actually, I didn’t talk to anyone about it. Not even Tom. I just kept it a secret and thought that if people can read into it, great, and if people don’t notice it, that’s also fine because it’s not the main focus of the student plot. I still don’t know to this day if Aaron even knows about the whole E/R relationship, but it doesn’t matter, because I don’t think Enjolras should.”)
Do you guys think Éponine stood outside the Rue Plumet and watching Cosette and Valjean come home each day from their morning walks and wonder what it was like to have someone who cares enough to listen to your every word even when you had nothing important to say? Do you think Cosette saw that young boy outside the gates and wonder what is would be like if she could wander around Paris as she pleased? Do you think they both felt guilty for wanting something they could never have?
All fun and games til u actually gotta draw the vest thing

~Lost In Translation~
ok 'bring him home' is my third favourite song, but we all know how it really went down...
i am proud to announce that i have reached the SEWER DIGRESSION in my inaugural unabridged reading of les mis! in honour of this momentous acheivement, i am reblogging this old masterpiece.
something very self indulgent bc i havent done digital art since november
Actual quote was like, "He should have been dancing at the Chaumière, as young people have a moral obligation to do."
One more late contribution to Barricade Week. I think M. Gillenormand is one of my favorite characters from the book. He is not a very good guardian, but everything he does is so funny. I had to pause at the end of this chapter to draw this.
Les Mis where everything is the same but in every scene Javert's hat gets bigger
today i am thinking about the eight bullets that kill enjolras, and how i always see people saying they represent his eight friends to die at the barricade, but when i first read his death what came to my mind was the eight men to escape the barricade alive: valjean, marius, javert, and the five men who are given the national guard uniforms. i think of those eight bullets being meant for those eight men, and enjolras taking them all. he did not change the world in the way he meant, but he changed the world for eight men, and that has to be enough.
