I know it technically isn’t cannon, but Martin is definitely Nygmobblepot’s child, and nothing can tell me otherwise.

I love that instead of just saying “Come on. Uncle Penguin sent me to get you, let’s go” he’s says “let’s go get ice cream” and you know, probably actually does get the boy ice cream. It just reinforces my theory that the Riddler initially manifested when Ed was a child as the one to endure being abused by his father, because if that’s so, it makes it one of the Riddler’s major personality traits to hate abuse and want to protect kids from that, and to hurt the people in the position if power to do such a thing to a child.

So Oswald probably told Ed “and I swear we are not doing anything until Martin is safe, don’t even try to argue- where are you going?”

“I’m gonna go slaughter anyone who gets in my way of the boy! Buncha dead son of a bitches, I’ll tell you that, Oswald!!”

Oswald: oh god I’m on love all over again

And after he was sure Martin was okay, he went the extra mile to make him feel happy and safe with something as simple/domestic as ice cream even though he probably didn’t have the time, just to make sure the boy didn’t view him as threat the same as those other men (seeing as he did just witness Riddler blow them to smithereens)

Just. Ed is such an amazingly complex character. I love him so much

And then later, once Gotham is safe(er), (5x12 is a lie) and reconnected to the outside world, Oswald and Ed have Martin brought back to the city. At this point, he’s nearly 12, but he still remembers all that they did for him, and he happily returns. The reunion is loverly, although Oswald is a bit peeved at the amount of attention Martin is giving Edward the Second (the dog). 

Oswald teaches him how to kill silently, and how to cover your tracks, and how to make people work for you without them releasing it. And every night, he tells Martin that he is a brave, smart beautiful little boy, and that one day he will grow into a great man.

Ed (the human) teaches him how to make origami penguins, and how to make a perfect cup of tea, and how to destroy a body with only the contents of a kitchen cupboard. And every day, he’ll answer every question asked, and impart the oddest little bits of knowledge (did you know that the human skull is made up of 29 different bones…)

But the Riddler is the one that comforts him from the worst nightmares, the one that reminds Martin that he’ll never have to leave again, and that if anyone ever tries to hurt him or take him away, then. Well. That didn’t work out very well last time, now did it?

But in the end, they’re a family. Ruling Gotham City together.

And sometimes, they all go get ice cream.
