I love Bigfoot. master of Specifically Kumite!
A friend of mine used to post thirst traps on main until someone described one such photo as being their "asexual awakening" and I think about this every day
one time in college i was in a creative writing class and this guy was holding up the critique with what i can only describe as like cinemasins dinging another student's writing. and at some point the professor said "the plot is the fork and the prose is the meal. you are critiquing the taste of the fork"
Judith Butler, philosopher: ‘If you sacrifice a minority like trans people, you are operating within a fascist logic’
Time to feed unprofessional managers what they’ve been dishing out for far too long.
Couple things here, for when you do this to people:
1. if you get the “answer my call” text, NEVER ANSWER THE CALL.
They are calling you because they want to have the conversation verbally, and be able to lie later about what they said or didn’t say. Force them to continue via text or email- force them to continue the conversation in writing or not at all.
2. “Lack of 2 weeks notice is unprofessional!” or the other version, “Not providing notice is illegal!”
No it isn’t. Neither is true.
And in the US, all states except Montana are “at will” employment (though you may hear an employer refer to it as “right to work” to make it sound better, it’s the same thing). Sure, at-will employment means they can fire you without cause, BUT! It also means that you are not legally required to give a reason for quitting, or to give notice of any kind.
Is it polite to give notice when you can? Sure. Do bosses expect it? Absolutely. But that does not make you legally required to provide it.
3. The only thing I would change in the worker’s interaction here was their response when initially asked to come in.
Employee: “Hey Mark. Sorry I’m unable to cover the shift tonight because I’m studying for my exam tomorrow.”
Don’t give a reason for your lack of availability. It may be tempting to. You may feel rude if you don’t.
DON’T DO IT.
You do not owe your boss any information about what you do off the clock, and any reason you give will only ever be used against you.
Boss: “Hey I need you to cover Jasper’s shift tonight.”
Employee: “Sorry, I’m not available.”
And leave it at that.
Do not elaborate.
Do not offer additional information.
When you boss asks you to elaborate, because they will, be polite but firm. “With respect, that’s personal. I’m sorry, but I’m unavailable to cover this shift/work late/come in early/etc.”
Be a broken record- you’re unavailable. That’s the only information they need to know, and it’s the only information they have a LEGAL RIGHT to know.
Please stop giving your bosses information they don’t need to know and don’t get to have, because they’re only going to try and use it to fuck you over later.
My job is HR. The above is completely accurate.
Every state split in half by population – the densest half and least dense half
Me when i definitely know what halves are
Oh you’re part of the densest half
the paris catacombs are 1000x more fucked up than i imagined
did you know the cops once found a fully functioning movie theater with a well-stocked bar inside the catacombs and they when they tried to go back later to formally investigate it was completely emptied out save for a note that read "don't search for us"
Underground french cinema
my little bro is part of the catacombs community and yeah, it's basically a fully autonomous society! enough that when my bro goes in on a friday night, they don't come out until monday for work- sometimes longer if they took days off.
some of the rooms have fully stocked pantries with cooking equipment, some have movies like the one described above, some have books you're allowed to just take but people always put back- every day people bring things from the outside. artists often set up galleries there. there are rooms with mattresses and hammocks set up for people to sleep. one of the room is just a place where people leave shoes for the fun of it.
this is Known, it's not a secret by any means. the catacombs are as big as paris itself, and people live there just as people live above. it's wonderful when you think about it.
A little update! My little bro is now my little sister. Please don't misgender her :)
Okay, I finished the main images that have been plaguing my brain, so help yourself to: Gondor-Rohan Weddin Day, AU Edition
BROTHER HONOR GUARD
Also details because we all know I love symbolism: Eowyn's carrying Theoden's sword, and she has a Gondorian medal of honor and seabird-wing necklace, while Faramir has a Rohanian crest.
After all the tragedy and trauma, you know--you know--Boromir and Eomer would spend all day being stupid giddy and trying to start shit to cover up for it.
With help from Merry and Pippin
Get him, Eowyn
Who's that in the crowd eyeballing the Third Marshal of the Riddermark?
Final shot for everyone who's obsessed with Boromir's awesome hugs
Okay I have to stop for now or I'm gonna miss a plane, byeee
5 simple exercises to awaken dormant muscles
{source}
I appreciate this video a lot--people don't realize how important it is to start slow if you're trying to come back from a completely sedentary lifestyle, and they get really hurt as a result. Straining your muscles too much, too suddenly can land you in the E.R. and the wrong joint injury can permanently affect your mobility, so please start with absolute basics and easy stretches!
“scientists don’t want you know” is a phrase that always cracks me up because if you actually meet a scientist they will be shaking and crying like an overstimulated chihuahua with the need to let you know
If your language lost, it should die with dignity, not be put on artificial life-support because ‘reasons’
#Sorry but I have no sympathy for that fight#let the dead languages be dead#grumping#controversial opinions#because people always get annoyed with me when I say this#but Gaelic (for example) shouldn’t still exist
———–
Gaelic hasnt been lost. It’s never died or been brought back. There’s an unbroken line of native speakers going back to the beginning of the language. That doesn’t seem like a ‘lost’ language to me. Furthermore I’m not sure what ‘artificial life-support’ means in this context. Gaelic is given funding for schools because there’s still native speakers of the language. It’s no more artificial than money being given to schools for English language lessons.
If anything is ‘artificial’ its the imposition of a foreign language (English) into a Gaelic majority zone and native speakers having to fight for decades to be able to be taught in their own language. Native speakers being forced to learn English to exist within their own regions because a central government would not allow services to be given in a people’s own language.
But then the clock only goes back so far with people who wish that minority languages would just die. There’s nothing artificial about shooting someone but suddenly it becomes an ‘artificial’ act to maybe phone an ambulance?
“There’s nothing artificial about shooting someone but suddenly it becomes an ‘artificial’ act to maybe phone an ambulance?” — THIS RIGHT HERE
Also just gonna point out here:
In the UK, the languages Gaelige, Gaelic, Cymraeg and Kernewek (that’s Irish, Scottish, Welsh and Cornish respectively) didn’t just “die out.” There was a concerted effort by the English to kill them off.
For example, in Wales, if a child was heard speaking Welsh in a classroom, they’d be given a “Welsh Not”, a wooden plaque engraved with “WN” to hang around their neck. They’d pass it onto the next child heard speaking Welsh, and whoever had the Welsh Not at the end of the day was punished - usually with a beating.
Kernewek was revived after a long hard struggle by the Cornish folk, and is now being taught again, but a lot about it has been lost because everyone who grew up speaking it has died.
And languages are never revived “just because.” The language of a place can offer so much insight into its history, so if you’re content to let a language die then you’re content to let history die.
People talk about “dead” languages as if they dwindle away gradually, naturally coming to an end and evolving into something else, but that’s rarely the case. Languages like Cymraeg and Gaelige and especially Kernewek didn’t have the chance to die with dignity, they were literally beaten out of my parents and grandparents.
Is it any wonder every other country hate the English? We invade their country, steal their history, claim pieces of their history as ours or flat out re-write it, and kill every part of their culture that we can.
It’s a miracle that any of the Celtic languages survived, so even if you don’t see the point in keeping them alive, the actual natives of each country we’ve fucked over are clinging onto what heritage they have left through the only thing they can: their language.
That’s really funny to me because in my high school breton class (the celtic language of Britanny, France), I remember going to a local retirement home to translate a classmate’s deceased grandma’s recipe because breton has been so destroyed by the french government in the last century that some of the words she wrote weren’t in any published dictionaries. So the only way for this kid to get the recipe his grandma used to bake for him growing up was to go to the last generation of people who spoke breton.
I also remember a guy whose tiktok was dedicated to showing indian recipes that were slowly being lost because of english and other dominant languages drowning out the language of the culture that made them.
And I remember in my breton class learning about AAVE through US rap, and about how shaming the use of a language or dialect as wrong and/or stupider is also about shaming a culture out of existence; and then I learned about how killing breton was as much about closing schools and forcing administration to be done in french as it was about shaming people who spoke it. There is a well known 1900s school poster with a rule on it that goes “no spitting on the floor and no speaking breton”, and the punishment for either was a whack on the tips of the fingers with a wooden ruler. Breton was called the language of pigs and geese. There’s still insulting words existing in french language that were about bretons, like plouc (a rural and stupid person) or baragouiner (to speak unintelligibly). And then I remember learning about the colonisation of Africa by France and the methods that were used to smother the languages there too.
A language dying is a normal part of life: it usually evolves into something else, like latin giving us a bunch of languages, and historians can reverse engineer it through those languages. A language being killed means nothing of the sort gets left behind. It means meeting an 80yo grandma with alzheimer who cries to a 14yo me because she’s ashamed of remembering a word in her “dirty” mother tongue but not in french. It means learning about the almost century where a language that still has alive native speakers has stagnated so badly that in the early 2010s it still didn’t have a word for computer. It’s learning about how historians were touring retirements homes in hopes that someone there could help them translate documents dating WWI, because the main form of language conservation for breton in the 20th century was oral transmission.
Language is about more than just words. It’s stories, tales, songs, music, dances, food, traditions, history, community and identity. It frames the way you relate to the world and the way you think. It shapes a culture and remembers it the way it was, not just the way onlookers saw it. Its decline is as important as its evolution, and it cannot be boiled down to “but english is more useful anyway”.
