In turn, a moderator of the server reacted angrily. Likely completing the template for an argument she had had a thousand times long before I had joined. But a specific thing she said stood out to me, and I still think about it today.

It's almost an automatically incorrect thing. It's hard to express such an explicit contradiction. You hear it and you think "oh, that person is wrong."

But at the same time, I think you can understand the impulse, right?

I think it's part of the broader tendency to place oneself above history. To believe that one's understanding of the world grants oneself immunity to being a part of it. To seek to transcend the forces of the world, rather than consciously understanding oneself as part of them.
