Sigyn's Rustic Rosemary Bread

One night before bed I was having a chat with Loki and I asked them "what plant would you associate with Sigyn?" I haven't worked a whole lot with her and since there isn't a whole lot of text on her I wanted to get an idea of what Loki thought she would like. Their reply was instant and clear- Rosemary.

With rosemary's magical and scientific properties of protection, healing, memory, and love, it makes a perfect match for Sigyn.

I have been getting back into making my own bread so I decided that I would make a Rosemary Bread for her and this bitch is lazy, so it had to be simple.

This recipe is an edit of one of my favorites,This one, and it's basically fool proof. This dense rustic bread is super simple with no yeast and it comes together in like 30 min. I love it so much I'm never buying bread again.

Recipe

Ingredients

2 cups all purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 tablespoon fresh finely chopped rosemary

3/4 cup lukewarm water

1 tablespoon melted butter (or vegan alternative)

1 teaspoon sea salt for topping

2 teaspoons finely chopped rosemary for topping

Instructions

Pre-heat oven to 425F (220C) and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

In a large bowl whisk together the flour, salt, baking powder and 1 tbsp of rosemary. Then add the water and mix together with a spatula.

Sprinkle a flat surface with a little four, place the dough on top and gently knead for a minute or two until smooth.

Form the dough into your preferred loaf shape and score the top. Place on prepared baking sheet and brush your melted butter (or alternative) on top. Sprinkle the sea salt and remainder of rosemary on the butter.

Bake for 15 minutes then lower the temp to 350F(180C) for another 10 minutes.

Let cool on a wire rack before serving.

I think part of why the like. "Can you tell things about people based on what media/fiction they're into" discussion is so insufferable is because people are using the same words to talk about philosophical truth and functional knowledge.

Because like. Yeah. Sure. Everything you ever do "says something about you" on some level. If we are being pedantic and literal, and operating in the realm of true meaning™, then everything anyone has ever written read watched performed whatever. All art has meaning and this includes its creators as well as anyone who interacts with it. Interacting with the world outside of yourself is the basis for the creation of self!! Nothing is truly neutral we should all die and explode! Existentialism forever!!

But like. On a more practical level. No you actually cannot draw definitive conclusions about anyone solely from what media they interact with. Literally the only thing you can "know" in that case, is the fact of the action. They read the book, they watched the movie. That is all reading or watching actually tangibly "tells" you about a person.

Any further information gained is not actually gained from the action itself, nor the desire to engage with media in and of itself. If you talk to someone about their perspective as it relates to a piece of media, that is the mechanism that informs you of their perspective on real life topics related to what's in the media, not the knowledge of them having consumed the media itself.

It is infinitely possible for this to end up having ramifications about their character or intentions or whatever whatever, but that doesn't actually matter, because "they read/watched a thing" is never enough information to do anything with, on top of probably not being any of your business. And attempting to link the two for the sake of controlling hypothetical actions and anticipating threats, specifically, by finding A Way to identify dangerous people by their desires and inclinations before they've actually done anything. Is in fact the basis of Puritanism and conservative thought. Like it just is. No amount of noble intent makes this less true.

It's also just like. On a very basic level a fact about reality that needs to be accepted. You cannot know what is going on in people's heads and no systemic attempt can be made to overcome this fact that wouldn't require deeply harmful violations of people's right to privacy and autonomy.

So like yes. Technically!! Everything affects everything else nothing is independently true least of all humans not being a product of their environment and choices and access to information and art, etcetera. But that's not actually what's being talked about. It's only meaningful to center this in the discussion if you feel that the need for censorship is somehow self evident, and inability to know everything about everyone is some intolerable moral risk. Neither of these are self evident much less true.

lord of the rings is a fun place to fandom because there's so many options to obsess over no matter what your interests are, but because of that it's also a humbling reminder that different people like different things and that's ok.

like, for me the heart and soul of lotr is the hobbits, and it always bemuses me to see how underrated they can be in fics or fandom like?? you have these funky little fuckers who are really brave and kind and loyal but also have oddball forms of government and eat and party a lot and get into scrapes and have all these hobbit pals and there's all sorts of shipping options and they have interesting nuanced social politics and second breakfast and pipeweed and they give presents on their birthday instead of the other way around so they're always getting presents and they're hilariously weird about their family trees and they led full-scale guerrilla warfare against these bastards who invaded their homeland but also all they want to do is chill and have nice gardens and probably judge vegetable growing competitions and have pretty dances

and instead people are getting super invested in basic-bad-boy-bitch sauron? huh. fair enough. the world is indeed a rich tapestry.

in the interests about being open and honest about my own flaws the early iteration of this post was way snider about this particular fandom quirk*. but you know what? if people want to go nuts over a particular character who is (in order) middle earth's top model/a sentient heap of metal work/a disembodied eyeball, then who am I to heap scorn on that in the main tag?

(I do think more people should have fun with the sentient scrap metal/disembodied eye element of the character just for shits and giggles. if you're going to go mad over a villain at least have fun with it, you know?)
