remember, folks: trans men are capable of transphobia and transmisogyny in the same way that all marginalized people are capable of lateral aggression but they are not your primary oppressors
"what social issues do trans men and other afab trans people face"??? well lets see
according to the 2015 u.s. transgender survey:
"transgender men (32%) and non-binary people who had female on their original birth certificate (36%) [were] more likely to report being denied hormone coverage than transgender women (18%) and nonbinary people who had male on their original birth certificate (16%)" [page 95]
"transgender men (57%) were more likely to be denied surgery coverage than transgender women (54%) and non-binary people, including non-binary people with female on their original birth certificate (49%) and non-binary people with male on their original birth certificate (35%)" [page 95]
"transgender men (42%) were more likely to report negative experiences [with health care providers] than transgender women (36%) and non-binary respondents (24%)" [page 97]
"transgender men (31%) [were] more likely to avoid [health care] out of fear of discrimination than transgender women (22%) and non-binary respondents (20%)" [page 98]
"lifetime suicide attempt rates were higher for transgender men (45%) than for transgender women (40%) and non-binary respondents (39%)" [page 114]
"more than one-third (36%) of transgender men hid their past gender transition in the workplace in order to avoid discrimination [compared to 29% for trans women and 14% for nonbinary people]" [page 155]
"transgender men (51%) and non-binary people with female on their original birth certificate (58%) [were] more likely to have been sexually assaulted, in contrast to transgender women (37%) and nonbinary people with male on their original birth certificate (41%)" [page 205]
"transgender men (52%) [were] more likely to report [negative experiences with airport security] than transgender women (31%)" [page 222]
"transgender men (75%) were far more likely to report sometimes or always avoiding using a public restroom, in contrast to transgender women (53%) and non-binary respondents (53%)" [page 228]
i highly recommend going through the rest of the survey to see the featured personal testimonials and other information - in the same survey you can find statistics about the absolutely horrendous oppression trans women specifically face, everywhere from higher rates of job rejection and k-12 school discrimination to severe violent crime, etc.
thus, the point here is absolutely not "trans men are more oppressed than trans women," bc that'd be a ridiculous and useless claim to make. the point is that they're not entitled to male privilege in the same way cis men are. so maybe we should stop letting that idea creep in before we end up bringing aggressive separatism back like the posts above. maybe we should stop basing our opinions entirely on personal experience and abstract theory and remember to look at statistical facts
ever wonder how badly skewed the statistics of trans men being murdered are by our families and/or the media portraying us as lesbians or cishet tomboys? how the same almost definitely goes for corrective rape, forced pregnancy, physical assault, domestic abuse, intentional medical malpractice, forced homeless, and pretty much every other hate crime?
ever think about how trans men are told that we're 'less oppressed' or 'benefit from male privilege' when really what actually happens is that the vast majority of violence towards us is taken out of context and painted as 'just' lesbophobia or misogyny rather than specific bigotry towards trans men by virtue of us being trans men?
because i sure do fuckin think about it all the time
One thing I hate about when people say that Transmascs face ‘misdirected misogyny’, is that it’s never to talk about how society views them as women and so treats them as women . It’s always to say that Transmascs can’t talk about how misogyny effects them.
Suddenly I can’t talk about how doctors denied me care because they perceived me as a women , because it’s ‘misdirected’ and therefore I can’t talk about it. Even though that ‘misdirected’ misogyny is going to cause me permanent problems for the rest of my life . Suddenly I can’t talk about how I was sexualized and dehumanized by the adults around me growing up , because it was ‘misdirected’ so it’s not that big of a deal!!
even if it’s ‘misdirected misogyny’ , it still causes Transmascs to be denied reproductive healthcare, denied transition care, to be raped, to be assaulted, and to be murdered.
Misogyny against trans men isn't misdirected because people see us as women, it's because that's how they treat trans men. It's not in spite of our male identity, it is 100% exacerbated by it.
When gay men are homophobically compared to women we don't call that misdirected misogyny, we call it homophobia because it's directed at gay men even though it's based in misogyny. If you think it's different for trans men, ask yourself why.
Well modern camera equipment can almost see in the dark so what do you even need lighting for?
i just gotta real quick make sure that youre joking. you are joking, right?
I’m not joking. Do you understand the ISO value system as it relates to film?
im not arguing that you cant film in the dark without special lighting (obviously you can), im saying you shouldnt. im arguing with the second half of your statement. the lighting in the first picture is very purposeful and enhances the horror of the film. they didnt get into the editing room and go “oh darn, we forgot to shine a light on the guy hiding in the shadows!” jaws was made scarier because you could rarely see the shark, so your brain invented the scariest possibility. you can just… see the whole man in the second picture. having a flat shot where the lighting doesnt even draw in the viewers eye to anything (much less obscure something thats supposed to give the movie tension and anticipation) looks fucking boring and adds nothing
thats what we need lighting for
One of these is much more visually appealing than the other
Lighting in film, and especially horror is so *so* important to the tension in the scene, it’s a significant part of visual storytelling, and the cinematographer/DOP (director of photography) should’ve picked up on that.
It’s particularly embarrassing in comparison to the original material, as with digital/modern technology, you can literally see how the shot looks while you’re shooting.
This should’ve also been sorted in comp and fixed well before distribution.
As already pointed out, the lighting values have no depth to them, thus creating a very flat scene (this is one of the first design principles we are taught in design for animation/film- if I had handed in a lighting shot or concept anything like this, I would’ve failed the module).
If you take the shots and put them into greyscale, you can see this a lot clearer.
In the original Halloween shot, we can see a high range of value (how bright or dark something is)- the lighting is brightest on Jamie Lee Curtis, the viewer’s eye is drawn to her first- we can see her emotions clearly and gain sympathy for her character. Then we are drawn into the darkest value, creating dread, and this is fulfilled and heightened with the contrasting (and next highest) value of Michael’s mask.
In the modern shot, all the values are within a similar range (mid-greys), and there is no proper depth in value- making the tension within the shot fall flat (not ideal for horror).
In fact, the highest value in this shot is the fire in the background- which is where the eye is drawn to first. The background. Not the action. So instead of feeling empathy or dread, we are focusing on the wrong details.
And yes, while it could be said from a film analysis POV that the flatness of the shot ‘puts the characters on the same fighting ground/level of power in the shot,’ I’m not going to give them the benefit.
To top it off, the use of colour in the modern shot highlights the errors in lighting. Whilst sharing the blue/orange colour scheme of the original shot, everything is blue except the one area of contrast, the orange fire. So once again, we are drawn to none of the action and instead the background.
With a very small edit in compositing and lighting to match the original Halloween, the feeling (and focus) of the shot is completely changed. The shot has higher contrast and range of values- the focus is on Curtis, while Michael feels more foreboding in the darkness. The contrast puts the characters on opposite sides- good vs evil, telling a narrative in contrast to the unedited shot.
These effects could’ve easily been achieved by adding a key light on Curtis and rim lighting on Michael in production, and if necessary, editing value depth in comp to enhance the raw footage.
TLDR: Digital filmmakers still need to know traditional film and design theory- just because you have good actors, cameras and composition, does not mean you can forgo basic film craft. The aim of cinematography is to enhance the narrative, not restrict it.
ultimately… who cares if cameras can see in the dark? we’re not making movies for cameras.

My new meds make my skin throw a fit. It’s not terribly bad, just a few things here and there, but it’s bumming me out because I’ve never really had too many run-ins with acne.
My four-year-old sister, however, is under the impression that it’s just “3D freckles”, and that they look very, very pretty. She wants all of my freckles to “pop out”, especially the ones across my nose; they’re her favourite.
And it puts me in this weird position where I can’t say, “No, this is acne, and it’s bad,” because I don’t want to teach her that it’s a bad to have unclear skin, you know?
Because the more I think about interactions I have with children, the more I realise that children will consistently compliment “flaws” until they’ve been taught not to.
Like, a kid at the library, whose sister has vitiligo, saw my scars once and suggested that his sister and I should be cats for Halloween, since I have “tabby skin” and she has “calico skin”. “I can be a black cat,” he immediately added. “It’s not AS cool, but they’re the spookiest.”
When I started losing weight, my little brother immediately demanded that I gain it back, because I wasn’t as comfortable to cuddle with anymore.
And my other little sister always wants to wear her paint-stained clothes to school so that “everyone can tell [she’s] an artist”.
I don’t know. I guess talking to little kids just reminds me that all of this superficial shit we worry about really is 100% made up.
not to Discourse but I’m a cis man and my partner is an afab enby and if you call us a “straight couple” I will personally come to your house tie you to a chair and make you listen to a podcast about gender identity on endless repeat
this is specifically @ the people who saw us at pride together and saw them wearing a “THEY/THEM” button and still referred to them as my “girlfriend” you’re all cancelled thanks
it’s called respecting queer people juice
y'know the really amazing thing about the notes on this post - apart from just the sheer number of people who are, like, viscerally terrified of the existence of a person who isn’t cis - is how many of them are responding to things that aren’t here. specifically, you’ll notice I said nothing about my sexuality. I didn’t say I identified as non-het, or that I considered myself part of the LGBTQIA community. on the flip side, I also didn’t give you any reason to believe I’m not bi, or that I’ve never been in a relationship with a cis man. y'all know nothing about my sexuality from this post and you don’t need to and I’m not going to tell you about it now because! this post! was not! about me!
it was about respecting my partner’s identity. and the fact that they don’t get that respect from people in the exact community that they should be able to count on getting it from.
ie, you.
they are not het or cis, and no relationship they are in will ever be a “straight relationship” because they. are not. het. or. cis.
everyone in the notes gatekeeping me because I’m “not oppressed”? I never said I was. the person you’re really attacking and invalidating by shitting on this post is them, a pansexual nonbinary person who is unerasably queer.
huh. it’s almost as if the whole “we can’t let straight men use queerness to worm their way into our community” discourse is just an excuse to hate trans people, isn’t it.
I reblog this every time I see it–
DO NOT VOLUNTEER TO BE A CO-SIGNER OR GUARANTOR FOR SOMEONE ON TUMBLR.
I just saw a 'mutual aid' post going around where instead of asking for donations, the person was asking someone to be a "guarantor" - also known as a "co-signer" - for their rent.
DO NOT DO THIS.
I am all for mutual aid. I think credit scores are a scam designed to fuck poor people. I get it. I do. BUT. Being a guarantor/co-signer for someone basically means that if they don't pay what they owe, for whatever reason, their landlord, bank, creditors, etc. can and will come after you for the full amount.
It seems like such an easy way to help someone. You don't need to pay any money, just lend them your name and good reputation so they can get permission to borrow and spend their own money. It feels like you're getting one over on the shitty capitalist system and using your privilege of good credit/income to help someone else.
But it is a HUGE risk. Do not do this. All it does is give that shitty system more ways to get their hooks into you and create tons of problems for you down the line.
You can really fuck yourself over in the long run by getting tangled up in a financial situation like this. Even co-signing for someone in your life who you trust, like a sibling or a parent, can be really risky. No matter how much you trust someone not to purposefully leave you holding the bag, now you're on the hook if they end up with financial problems neither of you anticipated.
Do not co-sign for another person's loan, car, rent, etc. unless you are able and prepared to pay the full amount or subject yourself to the mercy of whatever that person gets themselves into.
ESPECIALLY do not do this for someone on the internet, where scams are rife. Do not share your personal information with people online and NEVER allow someone else to use your personal information for their finances.
Here is an article with more information.
I... I can't believe this is actually a thing that's happening. Babies, PLEASE don't cosign for someone on social media! Even if it's someone you trust, it can go tits-up real fast. We talk about it in this episode of the podcast:

Monica is the head negotiator for the Writer’s Guild, a collective of Hollywood screenwriters who are edging closer and closer to a full on strike if the studios refuse to meet their incredibly reasonable demands. All the writers are asking for is fair treatment and compensation for their labor, but after a meeting with the greedy T-Rex CEO of Cobbler Studios goes south, a strike is called.
Now Monica and her companions are marching the picket lines and making their voices heard, working together to create better working across the film industry.
Unfortunately, this puts a terrible distance between Monica and her girlfriend Holly, who happens to be the physical manifestation of her own screenwriting. With no way to process these feelings, Monica looks for solace in the writing community itself, but will these efforts be enough to battle the cruel, money-hungry CEOs?
This important no sex tale is 4,100 words of collective bargaining as laborers organize to protest a nauseating dinosaur CEO with the power of solidarity and love.
