Fish and Chips
Fried fish, fried potatoesâubiquitous enough in most places Bond visited, given the propensity for port cities to deal in espionage. Too heavy prior to a mission, but greasy and salty enough for afterward. The unmistakable stench made the local doctors glower at him while he shrugged at them from his hospital bed; this was a bonus.Â
The only trouble was getting someone to smuggle it in for him.Â
In Porto, Tanner once pulled a tell-tale paper bag from his briefcase, the contents steamed soggy from their enclosure. âVery important mission notes,â he said with a wry quirk of his lips. Bond had to chew each bite extra slowly, nauseous from his medication, and Tanner ate half the chips for him without saying a word about it.Â
Felix brought an abomination from the U.S. fast food chain known as Captain Dâs into Bondâs private hospital room. âThis canât be representative of Houston cuisine,â Bond complained. He squeezed a âhush puppyâ testingly between two tremorous fingers. Â
Felix smirked. âItâs mystery fish from a mystery source; that kind of ambiguity is very Houstonian, which I expect you know, given your run-in with our mystery weapons dealer and their mystery bullets.âÂ
Bond threw the first hush puppy at Felixâs head, but he ate the second one: fried cornmeal and onion. Not terrible. The chips were the wrong texture and the fish was a travesty, but they were also not terrible.  Â
Felix could probably bring him a lot of things and Bond would rate them ânot terrible.âÂ
Laid up in his flat after an unwanted intracranial operation vis a vis Blofeld, Bond heard a knock at his bedroom window.Â
A drone with a telltale paper bag hovered outside. It flashed a Morse code âQâ at him.Â
Bond let it in.  Â
Inside the bag, the battered fish was wrapped not in newspaper but in what turned out to be, when Bond peered closer, blank mission report papers and equipment destruction logs. Bond barked a laugh, crunched into a first still-steaming bite, and gave the drone a thumbs up. âThank you, Q.â Â
The drone twirled in an extravagant circle and left the way it had come.Â
How very like Q to deliver the best and freshest of fish and chips without understanding that the fish and chips werenât at all the point. Or perhaps how canny of him, to offer Bond what comfort he could without closing the distance between them.Â
