Fun fact: If my younger sister was in a car accident and desperately needed a blood transfusion to live, and I was the only person on Earth who could donate blood to save her, and even though donating blood is a relatively easy, safe, and quick procedure no one can force me to give blood. Yes, even to save the life of a fully grown person, it would be ILLEGAL to FORCE me to donate blood if I didn’t want to.

See, we have this concept called “bodily autonomy.” It’s this….cultural notion that a person’s control over their own body is above all important and must not be infringed upon. 

Like, we can’t even take LIFE SAVING organs from CORPSES unless the person whose corpse it is gave consent before their death. Even corpses get bodily autonomy. 

To tell people that they MUST sacrifice their bodily autonomy for 9 months against their will in an incredibly expensive, invasive, difficult process to save what YOU view as another human life (a debatable claim in the early stages of pregnancy when the VAST majority of abortions are performed) is desperately unethical. You can’t even ask people to sacrifice bodily autonomy to give up organs they aren’t using anymore after they have died. 

You’re asking people who can become pregnant to accept less bodily autonomy than we grant to dead bodies.

First point: Bodily autonomy can be preserved, even if another life is dependent on it. See again the example about the blood donation. 

And here’s another point: When you say that “rape is the exception” you betray something FUNDAMENTALLY BROKEN about your own argument.

Because a fetus produced from sexual assault is biologically NO DIFFERENT than a fetus produced from consensual sex. No difference at all.

If one is alive, so is the other. If one is a person, so is the other. If one has a soul, then so does the other. If one is a little blessing that happened for a reason and must be protected, then so is the other. 

When you say that “Rape is the exception” what you betray is this: It isn’t about a life. This isn’t about the little soul sitting inside some person’s womb, because if it was you wouldn’t care about HOW it got there, only that it is a little life that needs protecting.

When you say “rape is the exception” what you say is this: You are treating pregnancy as a punishment. You are PUNISHING people who have had CONSENSUAL SEX but don’t want to go through a pregnancy. People who DARED to have consensual sex without the goal of procreation in mind, and this is their “consequence.” 

And that is gross.

A life is a life. Regardless of how it came to be. All life should be protected, if not we are no different from monsters.

I certainly appreciate this point of view, and I feel like it holds very true in most situations.

But there *are* situations where forcibly violating the bodily integrity of another person would save a life, and in basically all of those situations- we dont do it.

We could require organ donation and blood donation, and we dont do that. We could have a sort of “organ draft” where if your social security number gets pulled in a lottery, you have to donate a kidney or a pint of blood. We could force people into medical trails without their knoweldge to develop life saving drugs. We could save so many lives. But we dont.

Our bodies and our control over them are integral to our personhood. For the government to ban abortion is for the government to decree that another person gets to use your blood and organs for 40 weeks, that another person is allowed to leech the calcium from your bones without consent. The government gets to say that your body is their property to redistribute to another person as needed.

And THAT is very very uncomfortable. Our bodies are not property that the government can claim and parcel out to others. Our personhood is not up for auction.

Yes, the fact that abortion ends a life is sad. Access to abortion, however, is fundamental to our right to our own personhood. It is a human right.

To preface: I am very pro choice and very pro vaccination. I’m just curious as to how the vaccine argument would stand up to this. In my world, abortions would be legal for this very reason AND vaccines would be mandated. But what do you say to anti-vaxxers using this same argument?

Yeah, not to stray too far from the point, but vaccination does raise interesting issues.

One way to argue it is that while abortion only involves the people directly involved- the pregnant person and the fetus- not vaccinating can endanger many more people. Which could be the basis of a different approach.

But, to be honest, I dont think that vaccination should be a *legal* issue. I think that individual entities, like employers and schools and day care and health care providers, can AND SHOULD have policies about vaccination. But I dont actually think that the government should forcibly vaccinate unwilling people or imprison people for failing to get vaccinated.

Rather I think a combination of education, out reach, access, and strong policies from non-government organizations should work together to keep vaccination rates as high as possible.

Partly that’s because legislating around things like health issues and religious beliefs is tricky at best. But also because I dont think government should be in the business of banning or mandating medical procedures.

I think every single person should be as fully vaccinated as possible, for their own safety and others. But I dont think that the way to achieve that is government legislation.

A Twitter user saw an ad for this neat, unassuming house for sale for less than $159,000. 

It had a beautiful yard, so he made an app’t to see it. And, that’s when things got weird. 

The living room was messy and tacky, but it had a nice spiral staircase, an open 2nd fl. balcony, and Mediterranean style. 

But what was up with this mural of outer space?

And these 2 creepy homemade aliens?

Well, the space theme continued into the dining room. The mural made it look like you were in a spaceship that landed on the moon- see earth off in the distance?

Hmmm. This looks like the conference room in a space ship. 

The kitchen is plain, but still has a few touches, as well as a “sealed” hatch door. 

What, you say you like the beach? This house has you covered. The bedroom has a waterbed and that’s real sand on the floor. 

The bathroom is a tropical rain forest. 

This 2nd bedroom is beautifully staged in a hippie retro theme- notice the square bed- it must be a cardboard box.

Look, this spare room is a blank canvas- you can make it anything you like.

And, I don’t know what this is on the mezzanine. 

The back of the house is nice, but it’s a little overgrown- the ivy is starting to cover some of the windows. It was sold for $152,500.
