German Culture is buying single bottles only bc youre a student living by your damn self; then standing in front of a pfandflaschenautomat with a giant sack of empty pfandbottles, putting them in, one after the other. sometimes you have to try multiple times to get the hell-o-mat to accept your damn bottle. the queue behind you is growing and growing but you still have 56 bottles left. one bottle just wont go in. just wont. you put it on top of the automat, sweating profusely. the people behind you are coughing impatiently. you apologise, laughing awkwardly. the hell machine beeps suddenly. She’s Full. the whole queue groans. a woman is so kind and gets a shop assistant to empty the automat. you say thank you. the shop assistant rolls their eyes and leaves. you continue your darstardly deed.

This is from a sheltie group on fb, but I see these types of posts every once in a while and honestly they break my heart.

I was this person, kind of. Some details aside, I also walked into this more or less expecting the love-at-first-sight, instant (reciprocated) devotion experience, because when you get into getting your first sheltie/puppy, that’s what’s presented to you. You see eight-week-old puppies doing advanced tricks. You see four-month-olds heckin competition heeling (Sparty at that age just wanted to eat moss, she couldn’t even walk a straight line - much less watch me while keeping track of her stupid mantis legs).

Nobody talks about the ones that need even a day to find their balance - much less the ones that need six freaking months. You only hear about the amazing ones, and then only about their successes.

Even though I knew logically my dog was just a baby, all I saw around me were perfect puppies with seemingly irrevocable bonds to their owners and for half a year I slowly came to terms with the idea that I was a dog-owning failure. All I’d ever heard of were shelties and their work ethic and willingess to learn and perfect engagement, and I thought I was such a shitty owner I’d somehow managed to fuck up the un-upfuckable dog. As much as I loved her and wouldn’t trade her for the world, I resented myself and my abilities.

And even after the lightswitch moment at 8 months - just when I’d accepted owning a dog that didn’t even know I was there - our relationship has never stopped improving or developing. We’re five and a half years in and still getting ever closer.

Idk. I know I was stupid, but I guess I just wish someone had still taken the time to tell me.
