August 12, 2026 - A pro-Palestinian march was held from Queensland, over the boder into New South Wales, Australia.

The Queensland Government currently faces legal action, as laws cracking down on criticism of Israel are challenged. After bowing to pressure from the Zionist lobby, the far-right QLD Government has introduced laws banning phrases used to call for Palestinian liberation, like "from the river to the sea, palestine will be free".

The march across the QLD/NSW border demonstrated the absurdity of these new laws. QLD police watched closely as protestors headed south from Coolangatta. Once safely in NSW, the crowd called for liberation “From the riverto the sea” with little interest from NSW police.

This is in stark contrast to QLD where over 25 people have been arrested under Crisafulli’s free speech crackdown. The maximum penalty is two years in prison. Arrestees include retirees, students, workers and anti-Zionist Jews, all for calling for the freedom of the Palestinian people. [video]

There’s a college in my city that has a rumor that there’s a secret basement below the known basement that can only be accessed via some hidden stairs scattered around the school or by pressing a secret number sequence in some of the elevators. The staff at the school are super annoyed by this and have no idea where this rumor started.

But I know. I think it was me.

In my defense I never intended to start a rumor. Many years ago I worked as a cleaner at the school and one evening I had to transport one of those big floor washing machines from the basement to the second level via the elevator. When the doors opened a very confused looking man stood inside. He was one of those slicked back gym-bro IT guys and made no movement to get out. The elevator wouldn’t fit him, me and the machine so I asked “Where are you going? Up or down?”

He gave me a smug shit-eating grin and said “Down?” in a mocking tone.

It took me a second to realize that of course he wasn’t going down, we were in the basement, but his look and tone annoyed me so much I refused to admit I misspoke and instead said “Yeah, down. I don’t know if you’re going to the second basement”

His smile disappeared “There’s a second basement?”

“Yeah but it sounds like you don’t have access to it so I guess you’re going up? I’ll just wait”

I never thought of it as anything other than a funny story to tell about that time I got so annoyed with a guy that I invented an entire second basement, but it turns out he probably refused to believe a cleaner fooled him and the story spread.

I demonstrated three types of spindle-spinning at an event recently (slightly over an hour of each one and then my arms would tell me it was time to change) and the different reactions from members of the public were quite fun.

1) Short suspension, low whorl (well, not much of a whorl at all, but weighted towards the bottom), with distaff - people mostly focused on what my hand was doing to the spindle. This one seemed fairly logical to onlookers.

2) Supported (tahkli), from the cloud - people mostly focused on the yarn in progress. They tended to watch for a little longer than with the first one.

3) Long suspension, top whorl, no distaff - people overwhelmingly asked "how does it keep spinning?". Like, over and over and over again. The fact that it was still spinning several feet away from my hands caught everyone. I would show them how I start it with my fingers and that's the only force and there are no other moving parts and it slows down eventually, and they would still ask what else made it go!

It was a very fun day. These were the three spindles I used, plus the lego one mentioned below. The white dog fur was on the tahkli.

Other notes from the day:

A) I had my other spindles on display and the lego+pencil spindle absolutely engaged people the most, much more than fancy carved ones did. I would highly recommend making something similar (colourful, cheap, robust, unexpected - it makes people want to reach out and they feel they can reach out) if you are spinning for the public outside of reenactment.

B) There were three of us for this part of the stall and we each used different tools (stick, spindles, modern saxony wheel; we didn't plan it this way, this is just who turned up!) which was very helpful when explaining some development of spinning and what each tool actually does. It would have been nice to have a demonstration of stages of fleece prep as well.

I was unknowingly working on a 35 foot long blanket for years

I started a blanket 10 years ago and put it down shortly after starting. It was on 30” circulars and I just kept casting on until I couldn’t fit anymore stitches. I was new to the hobby so I figured it would just be “blanket sized.”

I picked it back up about 6 months ago determined to finally finish this thing. I transferred it to 60” circulars to give myself more working space, and during that transfer I counted 450ish stitches, but that would just be a big king sized blanket right? So I kept going. But after about 9 balls of yarn and only 2 feet in length finished, I gave up and decided I would just crochet the blanket instead.

Halfway through my crocheted version, I ran out of yarn and made the sad decision to frog the knitted project for salvage yarn. After removing the circular needles, I thought it’d be interesting to see how wide the blanket actually was.

After straightening it all out I stared at my work, utterly dumbfounded, that I had been working on a 35 foot wide blanket this whole time. I am SO GLAD I did not finish this project as I would’ve cried at the monster I had brought into the world.

tl;dr - You should really pay attention to the size reference chart on your yarn and count the stitches when free-handing as a newbie.
