Given the blistering temperatures of late, I decided to give BlackBall Taiwanese Dessert a try, despite the tepid reviews on Yelp. BlackBall is a Taiwanese dessert chain that markets itself as an ‘healthy’ dessert alternative, with an emphasis on grass jelly desserts and the Taiwanese penchant for QQ, i.e., chewy.

AN ALMSGIVING FEAST IN YANGON

My family’s trip to Burma this past January coincided with my aunt’s and uncle’s. In honor of my grandmother, who passed away 17 years ago, they arranged an almsgiving ceremony at the Tipitaka Monastery in the centre of Yangon. As I’ve said before, the community is interwoven into the fabric of Burmese life. Almsgiving ceremonies, which are really communal feasts, including a donation of alms to the monastery, are just another manifestation of the this generous spirit. And the lunch served was absolutely delicious.

STREET FOOD 101: TAIPEI’S MENGJIA NIGHT MARKET

I went to Taipei with the goal of hitting up as many night markets as humanly possible. So our first night in the city, we headed off to the closest one to our hotel, Huaxi Night Market (華西街觀光夜市), which was rather sedated the night we went, with a lot of shuttered shops. So we instead spent a fair amount of time traversing Mengjia Night Market (艋舺夜市) instead. Both are anchored by Longshan Temple, a 16th century Buddhist-Taoist temple located in the middle of Taipei’s oldest district, Wanhua.

HOW TO EAT YOUR WAY THRU LA IN 8 HOURS

A few months ago, our good friend Janet flew back to Socal from Chicago. We picked her up at LAX around noon and immediately proceeded to do what we know best: eat (barring karaoke, of course).

Chicago’s paucity of good Asian eats is pretty well-known, so we had decided on an ambitious list of spots beforehand. With nearly a dozen places at hand, we managed to hit up almost all of them. The 27 mile food trek took us through 4 different neighborhoods: K-Town, Fairfax, Thai Town, and the San Gabriel Valley.

STREET FOOD 101: TAIPEI’S SHILIN NIGHT MARKET

Shilin Night Market (士林夜市) is a sprawling night market that extends along several streets in the middle of Taipei’s 2nd most populated district of the same name. While it’s widely cited by tourist guides and a great experience overall, if I were pressed for time, I’d pass this one, only because it lacks the signature grittiness of other Taipei night markets. (Food’s still awesome).

SAN PYA DAW KYI - YANGON, MYANMAR

Plenty of curried chicken bits, and fried pea fritters for a nice change of texture. Supple yellow wheat noodles perfectly complementing the intense creaminess of the noodle’s broth. The curdled duck blood, almost burgundy in color, delicate and rich. I immediately dove into my bowl, forgetting to cleanse my palate with some of the complimentary green tea served at Burmese restaurants.

DAW YIN SHWE’S MOHINGA - YANGON, MYANMAR

The mohinga broth was a beautiful goldenrod hue, with just the right amount of liquid to solid ratio achieved from freshly roasted peanut powder and pea flour (which act as thickening agents to achieve that chowder-like texture).

And the broth was just the perfect remedy to a bumpy 4 hour road trip back into the city. Piping hot, hearty, and rich in flavor. And the sheer variety of ingredients in a 60 cent bowl: cooked banana stem, onions, shredded fish, and yummy fish cakes. My bowl of mohinga required no extra seasoning.

THIP SAMAI - BANGKOK

The noodles were on the thinner side, moist and chewy, seasoned for a nice sweet and sour contrast (fish sauce plus tamarind juice). The egg was cooked to perfection. Foregoing the standard proteins found in Thai American versions of pad thai, my plate came with dried shrimp and tofu. The noodles turn an orange-pink hue from the dried shrimp oil that’s used. Fresh bean sprouts, coriander and lime wedges were served on the side.

M JUICERY & CREAMERY - ALHAMBRA, CA

On my visit, there were 12 interesting flavors on display, ranging from drink-based flavors (Vietnamese coffee, Thai tea and caramel apple cider) to fruits (strawberry balsamic, pineapple celery sorbet, and cayenne mango sorbet). Flavors that one would presume would be diametrically opposed to each other oddly worked well together!
