Thinking out loud
subscribing to a fic isn’t enough I need the author to blast a bat signal into the night sky whenever they update
It's very endearing to me how many people are willing to keep an eye on a video feed so they can push a button and let a fish in the Netherlands get to the other side of a dam.
It is genuinely baffling to me, in a very kind and positive way, especially coupled with the local news continually going several shades of 'wtf, this thing is a roaring success again and we don't quite get why'. They've already quadrupled their capacity for simultaneous clicks and it's still nowhere near enough and there's just... Bewilderment.
I think people want to help the environment in small but tangible ways, which is hard right now because of.. well... because of The Horrors. And being able to say 'wow! I helped this creature cross a dam' makes you feel good.
I also think that most people can relate to a small, helpless creature trying to get from one place to another and there's a FUCKIN WALL in the way.
But to come back to point 1- Citizen Science fills a hole in the soul that wanted to go out on adventures and discover things when we were younger, but the study of it was hard or we didn't have the money or our schools were garbage. But you don't have to have a degree to do things like... press a button or download and use an app, or count or transcribe notes.
Anyways- here's some Citizen Science links if the Fish Doorbell makes you feel happy and you yearn for more ways to help scientists do stuff:
Foldit (folding proteins)
Fathomverse (sea animals)
Project Monarch (butterflies)
Bioblitz, an event where citizens identify as many species in an area within a period of time
Species Watch (animal species)
BOINC’s Compute for Science
Zooniverse is a website that hosts information on many citizen science projects
Label trees in aerial photos
Count cells in fossils and modern leaves
Digitize Atmospheric Data
Count penguins
US-based Citizen Science Database
eBird (bird identification)
Merlin (bird identification by sound)
iNaturalist (nature identification)
MapSwipe (collaboration between several Red Cross organizations and Doctors Without Borders, update vital geospatial data)
Smithsonian Archives Transcription Center
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Look buddy, i’m just trying to make it to Friday.
reblog if its friday and you made it
Love love love characters that present themselves as emotionally open social butterflies but the more you see of them the more obvious it is that they’re the most closed off fuckers in the story. Sure, they want to help you with your personal problems and messy emotions, but if you turn that shit back on them, they’ll shut down or deflect every time. Why are you sticking your nose in their business anyway? It’s not like it matters. They’re not a person, they’re just a role being played. They’re the guy who fixes things and saves people. Please ignore the man behind the mask, he’s fine. Everything’s fine.
I'm still thinking about the "baby ogres in Shrek universe just eat their siblings sometimes" thing because I think it's funny in a horrible way. Imagine not knowing about something like that about your partner's biology, as one of those things where it wouldn't even occur to you to discuss that beforehand because you weren't aware that it could go any other way.
Like picture Shrek being casual about it like aw you know what they say, can't get too attached to all of 'em. They'll pick out the weak on their own. Usually it's the two biggest ones that team up on the runt of the litter but ye know they say this means she's chief material. Can't say you didn't know this might happen.
And Fiona stares into the mostly empty, blood-splattered crib, eyes wide with utter horror, very clear that she 100% did not know that this might happen.
And the surviving baby girl, covered in gore and contently munching on her brother's severed leg, looks up to them and smiles a beaming adorable baby smile and goes "gah! :D"
met up with friends for a ‘friendsgiving’ thing yesterday and during a break between board games we started discussing smut and one of my friends said she would read a book about werewolf sex but only if they’re not like in werewolf form while doing it and (without thinking) I said “what’s the point then?”
offline people are weirdos
Most anime: The popular girl fell for the nerdy guy because it turns he has a heart of gold, which she really likes. The nerd melted the popular girl’s icy heart. Even though no one noticed him, she always noticed him. There was just something about the nerdy guy that made the popular girl fall in love with him. Even though the nerdy guy just played video games and kept to themselves most of the time, the popular girl fell for him because he was nice to her once.
DanDaDan: The popular girl falls for the nerdy guy because she’s a fucking weirdo too. Even the main female protagonist is weird af. All the main characters are weird.
Really can't go wrong in fantasy with a giant skeleton being part of the environment. I'm talking colossal, part of the scenery bones.
Oh yes, let me wonder what the hell it is, how it died, how long it has been there. Let me walk on its ribs pathways, climb inside an eyesocket, look at where it fused with the nature around it.

happy two years to the greatest bit tumblr ever made
honestly i love it when Things Happen on this webbedsite and people make videos like this. it's one of my favorite genres of posts
People who give pets a bit of chocolate when they know it’s their pets last day are a bit of a funny concept. Imagine being old and friends with an alien who will live ten times your lifespan and they’re like “ah shit he’s dying, well since you’re dying anyway haven’t you always wanted to know what uranium tastes like?”
In this scenario have you been asking to share the alien's uranium desserts for your entire friendship?
Well to be fair if I was friends with a heavy metal-eating alien and he LOVED uranium and loved to put it in various forms in his alien desserts or ate it on its own sometimes and his species had a guy who made intrictate edible uranium scuptures that everyone on Krunglr (Saturnian tumblr) lost their shit over then yeah I'd be quite curious too
yeah alright
Scrolled back up half expecting to see @elodieunderglass’s Horrible Things With Legs tag
Never too late to apply one!
I want this thing so bad. He even has the pattern in his bio. But I do not possess the tools to make it real. 😭😭😭

Lore-unfriendly companion who forcibly exits the menu screen to complain that they're bored if you spend more than five seconds reading an item description.
Lore-unfriendly companion who puts a real-time limit on NPC dialogue trees because if you try to explore every branch they'll wander off and accidentally cause some sort of incident. No other character is able to act in real time during dialogue in this fashion.
Lore-unfriendly companion whose presence in your party prevents you from ever finding out what the game's plot is about because the principal villain hates them so much they skip their monologue and fight on sight. What happened between them is never explained.
Lore-unfriendly companion who accidentally shoots the tutorial fairy while fiddling with their gun.
