Once you start noticing how the incapacity to handle discomfort affects how people live their lives it's actually pretty shocking how it ruins pretty much every conceivable aspect of existence. Interpersonal relationships, romantic and platonic. Career and education opportunities. Your politics Your willingness to go anywhere. The kind of food you eat. The kind of art you expose yourself to and your ability to read it. It's never just one thing, it touches everything, and once you notice it it's like suddenly being able to see germs or something. Just this horrific catastrophe people look at you askance for screaming about. As I grow older and see what became of my friends and peers who could not learn to handle discomfort, the more I'm like. This is a genuine societal issue

There's "not caring about public health", and then there's whatever the US has going on, which is an OUTRIGHT antagonistic relationship with the concept itself. Like, you get mocked and harassed here, even attacked (thankfully not common but it happens), if you openly care about public health. Wear a medical mask, you might literally get beat up or harassed in public here - at the very least some TikTok dork is going to record you to mock you online with thousands of other Americans who agree public health should be actively avoided and even sabotaged, as it's a sign of weakness...? I think. Caring about public health, hell even masking for JUST YOURSELF, is taboo here. We think anyone who DOES get sick here DESERVES to be sick and we should all collectively abandon them for being that weak. It's unhinged.
