I am nursing a hangover because my neighbors invited me over for a dinner last night that was actually a high school graduation party for their eldest daughter but what it actually actually was was 16 Hindu families getting drunk and having a dance party in the basement teaching me, the Lone Jew, how to do Indian dances and getting me Quite Drunk while the kids watched YouTube upstairs

Favorite highlights of the evening:

- my neighbors telling all their friends and family about my landscaping and woodland restoration. I have never discussed this with my neighbors! But hearing last night that it’s been positively noticed and they are so appreciative really did make me feel Quite Good. They also wanted to use my yard for photos because of all my native plant blooms lol and they can’t wait for winter for me to clear out more vines and bramble. The part that really made my heart sing was that everyone said they noticed a distinct increase in fireflies this year compared to last.

- a mom and her smol daughter are introducing themselves to me. Daughter gives me a very English sounding name, mom says something under her breath like “that’s not your name!” And I say to the smol girl “My Anglicized name is ____, but my real name, my Hebrew name, is ____. Do you want me to call you by your real name? Because I’d like to call you by your real name. I can pronounce it, I promise.” And both mom and smol daughter LIGHT UP and immediately ditch their English names.

- all 16 families give speeches about the high school grad and then suddenly I am also asked to give a speech about this girl I know only in passing. Made a joke, crushed it. I am the Cool Neighbor now.

- having Very Bad Scotch with all the men outside discussing Immigration, the Economy, and Agriculture. They were fascinated that I am the one who does all things outdoorsy, that I am the landscaper and gardener and farmer, not my cishet spouse. I give many facts about bats, I have convinced many to invest in saving bats by citing how much money they save Society in crop pest control annually. I give many impassioned talks about the prairies and learn a tremendous amount about rubber trees and rubber tree plantations in India.

- I have been over to their house a few times before this and there’s never ever been any alcohol so I assumed none of them drank but then this One Guy shows up and I am informed that he is The Guy. Next thing I know I have three drinks in my hand of three different liquors and I am thinking to myself “oh OKAY you guys party hard actually”

- when I am inside dancing with all the 50+ year old women, they are Impressed that I am picking up the moves so quickly and I say something off hand jokingly like “my people love to dance too” and then they stop the music and ask me to put on MY people’s music. Imagine it if you will, this Lone Jew, teaching 20 Indian women how to do the hora.

- love is real we have so much more in common than we don’t. People wanted my number to share with me Bollywood movie recommendations. I was sent home with so many leftovers. I love my little immigrant neighborhood. I love the instant Hindu-Jewish solidarity between our communities. It is so very, very real.

As someone who remembers the deep lore of Toby Fox being an accomplished pianist who then struggled with his playing and composition because of physical disability in his hands preventing him from being able to play effectively and without severe pain (right around the time when he was scripting Deltarune, in fact)...

The whole narrative of Kris being unable to play while shackled to the soul and then immediately spending the 10 minutes they have free of it (after requisite plot scheming) to play a 8 minute medley of Toby Fox songs (which I'm pretty sure is just a straight up recording of Toby himself playing) feels pretty personally moving in a way that I'm surprised I haven't seen more people talking about. Like yeah, those little moments of frustration when the soul tries to play and just plonks in the keys, that hits, I bet.

apparently my boss who is a professor at my school doesn’t have a cell phone and his coworkers were upset by this so they bought him a childs toy phone and labeled it “David’s jitterbug” (for those of you that don’t know jitterbugs are phones made for old people that have like massive buttons and shit) so the other day I walked into his office to ask him a question and he pressed a button on it which made it start loudly playing the ABCs and he said “excuse me I have to take this” and then started singing along to the ABCs while shooing me out of his office

Scent glands play a crucial role in Omegaverse biology, acting as biological markers of an individual’s secondary gender, emotional state, and hormonal shifts. These glands release pheromones that help with social bonding, attraction, and communication, especially during key life stages like pre-puberty, full puberty, heat, rut, and claiming rituals.

The Development of Scent Glands

Pup Stage (Before Pre-Puberty, Ages 0-8)

At birth, scent glands are underdeveloped and tiny—small enough to fit on the tip of a finger. Pups release a mild, powdery scent, usually described as milky, warm, and comforting. This scent acts as a natural bond between the pup and their family, making them recognizable to their parents, caregivers, and packmates.

Pre-Puberty (Ages 9-14)

As pre-puberty begins, scent glands begin to grow and activate, though they remain weak and inconsistent. Pups start developing early scenting instincts, like marking their belongings, rubbing their scent on trusted individuals, and recognizing pack members through smell alone.

Scent Evolution: The previously soft, powdery scent begins to change, subtly aligning with their developing secondary gender.

Sensitivity Increases: Certain areas, especially the neck and wrists, start becoming more responsive to touch and scent exchanges.

Social Learning: Pups instinctively start scent-marking close friends and family members as a way of bonding.

Full Puberty (Ages 15-19)

By the time full puberty hits, scent glands are fully developed, becoming strong, potent, and distinct. Different areas of the body release varying levels of scent intensity, depending on the location and the individual’s secondary gender.

Scent Profiles by Secondary Gender

Omegas

Omegas generally have sweeter, softer scents that change slightly based on body location:

Neck: Typically fruity, floral, or warm vanilla-like—this is their primary scent marker, often the strongest point of their pheromonal signature.

Belly: Becomes increasingly sweet and comforting, intensifying the closer it gets to their reproductive area.

Armpits & Inner Wrists: A lighter, more delicate version of their primary scent, often used for casual scent-marking with close individuals.

Alphas

Alphas typically have stronger, deeper scents with woody, musky, or spiced notes:

Lower Body / Genital Area: A much deeper, stronger musk, often with an added note of fresh, sharp spice or raw masculinity.

Wrists & Hands: More muted but still present—used for scenting objects or people during casual interactions.

Examples of Alpha Scent Combinations:

Peppermint & Mahogany (Neck) → Smoky Cedarwood & Leather (Chest) → Deep Musk & Sharp Spice (Genital Area

Sandalwood & Cinnamon (Neck) → Tobacco & Dark Honey (Chest) → Earthy Musk & Warm Amber (Genital Area)

Betas

Betas, being neutral in the hierarchy, have softer, more subtle scents that lack the intensity of Alphas and Omegas. Their scents are often clean, fresh, and slightly powdery, serving as a stabilizing presence in the dynamic.

1.Heat (Omegas)

During a heat cycle, an Omega’s scent glands become hypersensitive and overproduce pheromones, making them highly attractive to Alphas. Their scent shifts into a more intoxicating version of their usual profile, often becoming stronger, warmer, and more inviting.

Stronger Neck & Chest Scent: Used to lure potential mates.

Increased Slick Production: Their genital area releases a musky, fruity scent that signals fertility.

Sweeter Undertones: Scents become richer and more honeyed, sometimes with additional floral or sugary notes.

2.Dry Rut (Alphas)

Alphas in rut experience a surge in testosterone, making their scent thicker, heavier, and more dominant.

Sharpened Neck & Chest Scent: More intense woody, musky, or spicy notes.

Possessive Scenting: Alphas tend to rub or press their scent glands against objects and people they want to claim.

Aggressive Marking: Their scent is overwhelmingly strong, often lingering long after physical contact.

3. Claiming Rituals

When an Alpha and Omega bond, scent glands play a vital role:

Scent Mixing: Their pheromones blend, creating a distinct signature unique to their pairing.

Biting & Marking: The Alpha often bites the Omega’s scent gland (usually on the neck) to leave a permanent bond mark.

Mutual Scent Absorption: Their scents begin to subtly influence each other, making their bond recognizable to outsiders.

Scent Dynamics

Omegas

Compared to alphas, omegas generally have softer, more delicate scents. While there are exceptions, scents often include flowers, sweet scents like vanilla or caramel, fruity scents such as sweet berries, are among the common scent patterns. Scents follow a more “feminine” pattern while alphas have more “masculine” scents, although gender norms in terms of male or female are more loose in omegaverse as they’re overridden by alpha and omega. Omegas enjoy scenting their partners the most, and it is not specific to sexual settings. Scenting for omegas is an intimate act, and is ingrained from birth. Omegas generally scent their pups, beginning at birth and extending to the offspring’s mating. (So an omega will scent their pup until they have a mate of their own). Generally, omegas scent over the primary scent gland, which is the most major scent gland and the one located in the neck. The primary scent gland is the gland that is the most sacred to an alpha or an omega and is where a mating bite is placed. Betas do not have a primary scent gland. In addition, an omega’s scent intensifies during their heat cycle and may take on a more “pleasant” aphrodisiac note. During pregnancy, the scent is often sweeter.

Side note: Unpresented pups often have a scent like steamed milk, or a milky, soft scent.

Betas

Betas do not have scent glands, so they do not have individual scents. Occasionally, if a beta is in a relationship with a omega or alpha, it can be emotionally and instinctually satisfying for the partner to let them scent them.

Alpha

Alphas often have hardier scents, such as wood or sawdust (especially more fragrant ones such as pine or cedar), nature scents such as fresh rain, earthy scents such as wet soil or limestone, or crisp scents like ozone. Alphas tend to have “masculine” scents, granted masculine and feminine aren’t particularly solid concepts within the omegaverse as male/female is overridden by the overarching concept of alpha/omega. Alphas can also carry undertones to their scents, for example, an alpha may smell of fresh rain and iron, but carry a sweet scent as well of apples (FFVII Angeal Hewley’s scent in my headcanons). Alphas are territorial and scent their partner as a marking, similar to omegas. Alphas are more likely to scent their partner after mating, a rut, or their partner was around another alpha.
