What are Jax's true thoughts on Gangle? Like i know she likes to bully Gangle in particular but we see moments where it seems like she actually thinks that they're friends almost (like when she says "what? She likes it when i'm mean to her") and ofc the scene with her in Jax's mind

I think Jax takes his complex feelings on his mother out on Gangle, but tries to justify it to himself through delusions that it's not ACTUALLY abuse, even though it is. Most abusers don't ever think of themselves as abusers, and tend to make up a reality in which their abuse is either not that big a deal or it's somehow warranted.

And from Gangle's perspective, she was at a very vulnerable place when she joined, and Jax took control of their relationship. She formed a bit of a codependent bond with him even though it just mostly caused her pain. Losing a friend who frequently hurts you can fill you with complex feelings that are really hard to make sense out of.

You know, the older I get, the more I question if "show don't tell" is actually good advice. I feel like that really depends on the context and what you're trying to get across. Like, what if...

Two characters are going to meet up at a cafe to catch up. Character A (main character) arrives early, but Character B never shows up. A couple weeks later, Character A finds out that Character B is in the hospital. They go to the hospital to visit Character B. Character B is in a hospital bed, and Character A asks them, "What happened?"

Is it better to have Character B tell Character A that they got into a car crash while on their way to the cafe, or is it better to cut to a flashback where we see Character B's POV of getting into a car crash?

I know that you could have a third option--if this is a visual medium--you could have Character B explain the situation while providing visuals along with it. But like, is that better than the other 2 options?

I know this is somewhat subjective, but what is the most effective way of getting this information across in a satisfying way to most viewers? I genuinely want to know.

I was just thinking to myself about how different Adrien and Cat Noir are in their personalities, and how I wish Adrien showed more of his Cat Noir side, especially now that Gabriel is no longer controlling him.

It got me thinking about how Adrien has gotten so accustomed to burying his emotions or being agreeable and people pleasing because of his father, and even with Gabriel gone, he acts almost like a blank slate by default because that's all he's ever been allowed to do.

And that made me realize how Adrien is treated kind of similar to how women are treated and expected to act. He's supposed to smile and wave, take everything that's thrown at him, do what he's told, never speak up, always be respectful, and just exist to be eye candy.

When I realized that, I thought it would be really cool if someone made an AU where Adrien was transmasc, forced to be the perfect daughter as a civilian, but gets to express himself masculinely as Cat Noir. The more he rebels against his father (like when he quit being a model), and Gabriel eventually passing away, he gets comfortable being more boyish and no longer expected to be perfect and elegant.

This was just a completely self indulgent heavily projected idea I had but I thought it was a cool concept worth sharing.

whenever queer rep is subtle people will be like “It’s not canon, it’s just implied” and it’s like… Why would the writers imply a character/relationship is queer if they didn’t want you to think they were queer. Why would two male characters be presented in a way that’s “ambiguously” romantic if the author didn’t want you to think they were romantic at all. Why would a character be “implied” to be trans if the author didn’t want you to think the character was trans at all?

I think if you understand TADC as a deeply personal and direct story centering on transness, emotional/self repression, the inner complexity of cruel people, ego, control, self-destructive tendencies, second chances, and what it means to live a meaningful life, all filtered through the core vision of one person, you'll find a raw expression of all those things, an experience being shared. You'll find a story that is consistent in its theme, subject matter, and quality throughout. Not something impossibly esoteric or flawlessly sophisticated, but a story that puts every piece it needs to into place. A story that completes itself, that says what it needs to and leaves a mark after it does.

Conversely, if you understand TADC as a story to take every single aspect, moment, outcome, and detail totally literally rather than in tandem with the thematic signficance it communicates. Or were looking for a more lore-driven story. Or were hoping for a more rounded exploration of its world and characters, a hollistic dive into the premise it sets up rather than a story barreling towards a specific end goal/a very pointed thematic stance. You're gonna end up disappointed with what you got.

And this is not a moral judgement, I don't think any expectation is at all more correct than another. I actually think my last point is probably even the most fair stance to have. Especially if you don't engage with any secondary material and just look at the show itself, since it doesn't totally establish Jax as a core focus until later in its run. Some storylines do feel very sidelined.

But if you view the show for what it was meant to be rather than what it was expected to be, I personally think it was rather beautiful. Not perfect, not the pinnacle of cinema, but as a trans woman, it was meaningful to me, dearly so. I feel like the standards its being held to aren't totally reasonable. I think it's a story that deserved to be told as it is, I think it's human.

I actually think if you're not trans, you shouldn't be starting discussions on whether or not Jax being transfem is a good or bad writing decision, or if it "makes more sense" for him to be transmasc. But that's just my opinion. Maybe cis people know more about the trans experience than trans people do. Maybe gooseworx, the transfem writer, doesn't understand the transfem experience and Jax would actually be better as a trans man or a femboy because the cis fans said so. /sarc

If you're transfem and think Jax is bad rep, I think that's absolutely valid. But if you're a cis person, (who thinks it’s bad rep*) maybe you need to admit that you just didn't understand it and you don't know what you're talking about.

Gooseworx made it subtle BECAUSE cis people can't understand it. You can still enjoy the story without acknowledging Jax is transfem, but you can't say it "doesn't make sense" just because YOU didn't understand it.

Gooseworx is stronger than me because if my introspective transgender theme narrative about identity and accepting your circumstances was infiltrated by media iliterate 12 year olds who treated my work like it was fnaf and said my self insert of me at my worst was literally the worst person who deserved nothing but the worst and could not recover ever i would actually fucking explode. I would kill people. How does she do it.

As a transmasc enby person in this fandom, I think all the backlash/denial of Jax being transfem is because people are mad that they got "tricked" (I don't actually mean tricked exactly, but thats the best word I can think of right now) into liking/relating to a female character, and not only that, a TRANSFEM female character, especially with the current transphobic stuff going on in the world right now. People only tend to find flawed male characters interesting but find flawed female characters "annoying" and "badly written", so by having us follow a pre transition transfem character this whole time who is flawed and then revealing she's transfem afterwards, people are trying to deny she's transfem because they don't like that they found a flawed female character relatable or likeable. It all comes back to misogyny, because people don't want to admit they like a deeply flawed, traumatized transfem character, so they'd rather deny deny deny and kill the cows so they can't ever come home.

Jax isn't canonically transmasc, nor is she a cis man or a cis woman. You can still relate to her as a transmasc person or a cis man or a cis woman or as a nonbinary person. Both things are true at once. There are many elements of Jax being transfem that come from the pressure of societal misogyny and patriarchy, and everyone in society is affected by that, so we can all still find Jax relatable. Just because a character isn't exactly like you doesn't mean you can't relate to them.

Anyways, all of this to say, Jax is canonically transfem, fellas. You can still like AUs where Jax is a cis guy or a trans guy (as I do, as a transmasc guy who kins Jax). Plenty of people like gender swap AUs and whatnot. However, the reality is that Jax is transfem, so let's please not deny it and be transphobic about it.
