Reminder to pay attention to your local elections because right now my city’s attempt to build a light rail system is being held up by one singular idiot on the city council.
Your character doesn't need to be likeable. They need to be legible. The reader needs to understand every decision they make even when it's wrong, even when it's ugly, even when they want to shake them. Likeable is easy and forgettable. Legible is what makes someone stay with you for years. Make the logic of every bad choice visible. The reader doesn't have to agree with it. They just have to follow it.
Just saw an interview with an MN healthcare worker that ICE agents are taking detainees who are badly injured (one had a fractured skull) and leaving them without clothes in the woods to die
there is a list circulating locally of the various parks throughout the metro area where severely injured abductees have been unceremoniously dumped with no warm clothing in subzero temperatures.
they're also claiming that one abductee currently in the ICU "deliberately ran head-first into a brick wall." this, after one agent told a healthcare worker that the abductee "got his shit rocked."
DO NOT LOOK AWAY.
While obviously horrific, this isn't new, unique to ICE or the US.
Over the course of just two weeks in January and February of 2000, three Indigenous men were found frozen to death in Saskatoon after being
Abolishing ICE is only the first step. It's cops and the entire carceral system next, because this is all of them.
swag won’t pay the bills but apparently neither will your degree
you are fifteen thousand generations removed from stone tools
to be clear you are fifteen thousand generations removed from the invention of stone tools. not from the end of stone tools. modern humans are still using stone tools.
Flawless tags, @baddywronglegs
I thought you meant we were descendents -of- stone tools
your father was a handaxe and your mother smelt of microliths
saw an ad outside a local restaurant that said "have a star-crossed dinner this valentine's day"
do...do people not know being star-crossed is bad?
"come here and have a dinner that's cursed by fate"
Something neuroscience-y that helps with prose: attention is selective. A character will not notice everything in a room. They will notice what matters to their goal, fear, desire, training, wound, or obsession. A jealous character notices hands. a hungry character notices food. A soldier notices exits. A lonely character notices pairs. Description becomes character when attention has a bias.
It's important to note that Chekhov's Gun was not originally about foreshadowing, but a piece of advice to playwrights about how every element in a play should have narrative relevance. The corollary to Chekhov's Gun is that if a gun mounted on the wall in act 1 is never used at all in the entirety of the play, then it should be omitted from the play entirely.
also very true
I saw an otter briefly hop on top of a babirusa at the zoo and when the stranger standing next to me heard my camera shutter click he turned to me with this look of immense relief, put his hand to his chest, and said in a dead serious tone “oh thank christ someone caught that on film”
Not the best photo but here it is for posterity
I wanted to draw them
i think kids should be freely and easily be allowed to transition at low or zero cost and i want every public school to have gender neutral bathrooms and staff who know what being trans is and i want transition to not be as difficult as it is for kids.
i also think parental consent shouldn’t be required for kids to transition but that might be a bit much for some of you

“Intimacy is often awkward. And that isn’t a bad thing. In some ways, I’d even say it’s always awkward, in the sense that it’s never really something that’s exactly easy, especially when we’re just starting to get intimate with someone, rather than when we have been for a long time. Getting and being close to each other physically and emotionally always has its challenges and ways where we make ourselves vulnerable: if it didn’t offer those things, few people would be very interested in sex or other kinds of intimacy in the first place. Getting and being close to each other is a constant process of learning – about the other person and about ourselves – and growth, and learning and growing, especially around things or places that are deep and personal? Awkward. When we learn to walk, we fall over a lot, we’re shaky in our legs, we’re uncertain in our balance. Same goes for learning to be intimate.”
