Hi everyone

Hey everyone, it’s Delmo. Long time no see. I can’t believe it’s been five months already. Firstly, I just wanted to say how much I’m sorry about everything that’s happened and that I never would have imagined that things would have gotten this bad.

Aw man. I missed all of you. You guys are an amazing bunch of people and you were the ones to keep me going. I think you guys have made me stronger. So thank you.

I’m sorry I never warned or gave proper notice to anyone. I kind of wasn’t able to, but if I could’ve I would’ve. In case you don’t know what’s going on, my parents had found out about my art and drawings and did not agree with the content of my stories. So, they had everything taken down and I’m so sorry about everything suddenly disappearing.

I feel like a piece of me was taken away.

But I want everyone to know that I’m okay. The fight isn’t over yet because my parents are still very suspicious of me, however, things have died down a little bit–which is why I’m able to write this. I’m afraid I won’t be able to finish Wrong Answer right now because I had my drawing tablet taken away and they said they won’t give it back until next year. It sucks, I know. But I really feel like I can be patient. I can wait until next year.

I think at this point it’s better for me to lie low, the major stress has finally lifted and there’s some calmness entering the house again. So, I can wait until early next year to continue my comics. It’s not ideal and I kind of hate the idea, but I feel like I’m strong enough to do this properly. I can do this.

I hope that you guys can still stick with me through all this. It’s still a battle, but if we ride it out, it will be better in the end. I just know it. I will be back. That’s a promise. I just feel like this is the right way.

However, we can’t think that everything is rosy just yet. I won’t be able to reply to a lot of things without getting caught (my computer is in a heavily trafficked part of the house and checked regularly, so I have to get up early in the morning and cover all my history tracks). But I will try my best. I will not be able to be as ‘active’ as I was before. I’ll be here just enough to make it bearable for the both of us during this time. I hope that’s okay.

But don’t worry, it’s not all bad. I actually have been working on a BL story lately (secretly) that I’m happy to release chapter by chapter to make the wait a little more pleasant. It’s not a comic, unfortunately (as I said before, my drawing tablet is doing time out) but it’s a comedy BL with a similar charm to Wrong Answer. So anyway, do you want to read it?

Please, if an artist asks to send you back your money so that you can send it again correctly, do not be offended. You are paying them to do your commission, how can they do your commission with no money?

One of my favorite things in The Kindly Ones – or, indeed, in the whole of Sandman – is the conversation Neil has with his own work, depicted within different, seemingly unrelated panels throughout the story line.

Within Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series, the appearance of the protagonist, Dream, and his family the Endless changes slightly depending upon who they are talking to. When talking the Ancient Egyptian goddess Bast, for example, Dream looks more feline, when he’s talking to a cat he’s… well… a cat, and when talking to Titania he looks more like an Elf in some panels for example.

This also extended to humans as well, with Dream’s appearance and even speaking voice changing depending upon who he’s talking to. This appears in one notable scene towards the end of the Brief Lives storyline, where the guards protecting Dream’s son Orpheus hear Dream speaking in two different languages at once, which is what tips them off to his true nature.

A form of this is used in Gaiman’s new show American Gods, but in a different direction. While in Sandman the appearances of Dream, Death etc. changed to mimic the humans they were surrounded by, the first appearance of Anansi within the TV show has him both speaking in English and wearing modern clothing while on slave ship filled with people who in-theory shouldn’t understand what he’s saying.

Now, considering Mr Nancy uses the opportunity to exposit on how horrible life will be in America for the kidnapped folk and their descendants for centuries to come, it’s possible that he just chose a look he liked and stuck with it despite the anachonism. The language thing, however, leads me to believe that Anansi looks and talks like that because that’s how the MODERN AUDIENCE would see him, something seemingly supported by Anansi turning into a spider when seen from his worshipper’s perspective.

tips for writing bilingual characters

there are different types of bilinguals

the All Around: speaks, reads, and writes both languages pretty well

the Conversational: one language is stronger than the other; can speak the other language a lot better than they read/write it (a lot of kids of immigrants are this type)

the High Schooler: understands what’s being said to them in the other language, can’t really speak it

don’t have your characters randomly drop words from their other language mid-sentence around people who don’t speak it lol

languages are a mindset thing. like personally if i’m around english-speakers, i’m speaking english and i don’t really switch to my other language (which is portuguese)

so like if you’re writing a bilingual character who speaks spanish and have them say something like “hey chad let’s go to the biblioteca” to an english speaker i’ll probably spend 5 minutes laughing and then close your story lmao

exception: the character is speaking in their weaker language and forgot a word (”where are the…? uh… llaves…. keys! keys, where are they?”)

otherwise really the only time your character should be randomly switching languages mid-sentence is if they’re talking to another bilingual

like i don’t speak spanish but i’ve legit never heard a spanish speaker say “ay dios mio” to gringos lmao

conversations between two bilingual people can take a few different forms:

Pick One: they pick one language and kinda stick with it for the whole conversation (a conversation i might have with my portuguese-speaking mom: ”you okay?” “yeah, i’m good. how’re you?” “i’m fine, but your dad-”)

Back-and-Forth: someone says something in one language, the other person replies in the other (”tudo bem?” “yeah, i’m good. how’re you?” “tou bem, mas o seu pai-”)

Combo: they speak a combo of the two languages, a popular example being spanglish, though basically every bilingual has their own combo language (”tudo bem?” “sim, tou bem. how’re you?” “i’m fine, mas o seu pai-”)

when in doubt: just ask a bilingual to look at your stuff and tell you if anything sounds weird

me and my cousin speaking our portuguese/english combo sounds a lot different than my mom and my godmother doing the same thing

that’s because me and my cousin are native english speakers and our parents are native portuguese speakers

the kids of immigrants usually come up with their own unique way of saying things that are different than native speakers

if you’re writing a bilingual family the older kids’ll probably be more bilingual than the younger ones

i know earlier i said that people will forget words if they’re speaking their weaker language but to be honest i do it no matter what language i’m speaking so yeah if your character forgets a word they might drop a word from their other language in conversation

filler words are weirdly universal

so like while bilingual people don’t usually switch languages around people who aren’t bilingual we’ll throw filler words in

“ele me olhou e, like, eu juro que eu quase deu um soco nele-”

a lot of languages borrow words from english so it’s not too weird to have a random english word in an otherwise non-english conversation (my aunt @ my mom: “lilian você viu meu post no Facebook?”)

also sounds in general are just kind of a language transcending thing

you wanna find out what someone’s first language was?? break one of their bones lol

me, when i cracked my rib: “AIIIIIII JESUS CHRIST MY RIB’S DEFINITELY BROKEN TAKE ME TO THE HOSPITAL”

so if your character gets hurt they might make a sound of pain associated with their native language but will probably still speak in the language of the people they’re surrounded by

if two people start speaking another language in public there’s a 40% chance they’re talking shit and a 60% chance they’re having a conversation like: “where’s the bathroom” “i don’t know, ask the waitress she’s right here” “i can’t just ask-”

The only other possible scenarios where I would randomly blurted out different language are:

- When I’m skype-ing/in a call with my friends/family overseas that talk to me with language A and my roommate/someone else who speaks language B decided to engage me in some conversation/ask me a question.

- I’m texting in language A and someone speaks to me in language B.

There’s just no enough time for me to switch mindset and sometimes I’ll speak in the wrong language and confuse the other party trying to talk to me in language B lol

Also, I have this weird thing where my accent would change depending on whom I’m talking to. If they’re also bilingual and we’re speaking one language, I’ll switch to a more heavily accented version of that language.

Yup. I work in an ASL/Deaf environment, with Deaf coworkers and students, but I teach English. Both of my languages are a mess most days because I don’t have enough time to fully mentally switch. This is also why bilingual folks automatically being able to interpret a conversation between two people speaking their two languages is not as common/easy as you might think. So a character translating between their family and boyfriend is maybe less realistic, or at least less smooth than you might think.

 A certain artist (based in the Philippines might I add) recently made a J.CO (Indonesian donut restaurant chain) gijinka recently, and people accused them of whitewashing their gijinka because the character’s skin was too bright. I, as an Indonesian, am seriously offended. 

Not by the gijinka, 

but by the masses of people who are being offended ON MY BEHALF FOR THE WRONG REASONS.  The most insulting thing about this whole situation is that this website fucking auto-assumes that all brightly colored characters have been whitewashed and that this is always a bad thing and racist because of how things are in the West. Hi. Indonesia is not the United States. Indonesia is not a country in Europe. Indonesia is a multicultural society in Asia made up mostly of Southeast Asians, Melanesians, and East Asians. You can NOT apply the same exact sensitivities and narrative to Indonesia as you can in the West.  …Let me give you a quick rundown:

 Racism in Indonesia is not always about about a white skinned race oppressing a darker skinned race. If anything, it’s more to do with Xenophobia and Religion.  Following up on that, here’s the shocker:  The DISCRIMINATED MINORITY in Indonesia has a lighter skin color than the PRIVILEGED MAJORITY.  East Asians, mostly Chinese, who generally have brighter skin tones than your regular Southeast Asian person, are regular targets of hate speech, discrimination, racism, and even a 1998 genocide that still strikes fear and opens up old wounds in their hearts upon mention.  PLEASE GET THAT INTO YOUR DENSE SKULL.  Indonesia has serious racial problems, but you can NOT automatically assume everything as from a western country perspective.  To do so is seriously, seriously racist.

 The intention was “right” from your perspective, but please. Do your research, and don’t automatically always assume that light skin is whitewashing. You’re touching on a VERY sensitive and often radically different subject depending on which nation you are talking about.  It’s INSULTING to your fellow PoCs.  I feel insulted. I feel like this website just made a unanimous decision for me because I’m either too “uneducated” “uninformed”, “tolerant” or WHATEVER the fuck you think of Indonesians to feel offended for myself. This website made me think that the Indonesian restaurant chain CAN ONLY be run by Southeast Asians when there are hundreds, if not thousands of East Asian J.CO employees whose lives and stories, and struggle against discrimination you’ve just invalidated just because of your westernized view of racism.  AND TO TOP IT ALL OFF,  THE ARTIST YOU’RE MAD AT IS A PoC FROM THE SAME REGION AS INDONESIA THEMSELVES, (the Philippines) AN ARTIST WHO HAD NO INTENTION OF WHITEWASHING.
