It’s a nice sentiment, I like the energy, I do. That said, I am actually descended from a “Salem Witch,” and my Ancestor, Mary Isham Towne, was not burnt at the stake, she was hanged by the neck until dead. We’re not savages y’know.

Furthermore, Mary Isham Towne was a churchgoing, god-fearing woman, who just so happened to be a widow who owned a piece of land that the local judge wanted to purchase, but which she refused to sell, and which he set out to acquire pretty much immediately after he sentenced her execution.

So, y’know.

All of this is true, and you should say it, but I never assumed they're talking about the Salem victims? Like, depending on your understanding on witchcraft it might not even be real, but for our purposes, let's say folk magic counts. There's a lot of overlap between folk magic and herbalism and superstition and folk Christianity, at least in my part of the world. And yes, they did burn people in the town I was born, quite famously, in fact. Dgmw I don't find this phrase good, it's tacky and reeks of the woowooified oughties feminism of eyeliner sharp enough to kill a man, I'm just baffled about the assumption that it's referring to Salem. Am I missing context?

if the phrase is an Americanism, the Salem references are logical in a way. The notes are full of Salem references. I don't know where it is from.
