they made buck’s coming out and first queer relationship about eddie and they made eddie’s whole texas arc about buck and buck’s feelings and then. did nothing with neither. the characters were guest stars in their own story for no apparent reason. which is just. great. it’s awesome. buck hasn’t even called himself bisexual and now people are calling him gay outside the show and also he’s maybe homeless (?). eddie and chris have not had one (1) single conversation about shannon’s doppelgänger. or why chris ran away. eddie had a very brief storyline about choosing joy and then decidedly did not once choose joy. and really, guys. this is all great. and awesome. we had maddie and tommy openly discuss that maybe buck has feelings for eddie and then the show buried that storyline with bobby. who they killed? for. uh. realism. again, all great and awesome. fantastic stuff.

Eddie squints at the phone screen. It's too bright and it's too late but there's only two people who's texts come through at this hour: Chris and Buck.

Before Eddie even picked up the phone, he knew it would be Buck. Because Chris is a normal human and is asleep at 2:16 in the fucking morning.

Adjusting his brightness, Eddie unlocks his phone and reads the message from Buck.

Okay, I know I love cheese, but even this is ridiculous to me.

Clicking on the link attached to it, Eddie is brought to an article from October 2024, where a man had stolen (or attempted to steal) about $390,000 worth of cheese.

Eddie snorts and goes back to his messaging app, tapping on the call button at the top of his and Buck's chat.

He switches over to speakerphone and drops his phone onto the mattress, yawning as the call rings once.

"Eddie?" Buck answers, sounding worried. Like he hadn't woken Eddie up for an article about cheese.

"Stop texting me weird stuff so late at night." Eddie grumbles in reply, eyes already closed. He won't fall asleep - not yet - but he's comfy and Buck's voice is soothing.

"Well that’s pretty rude of you to say." Buck fires back, "I thought you'd be asleep!"

"I was. Until you texted me."

"Sorry." Buck does genuinely sound apologetic. "We haven't had a call in a couple hours. Everyone is asleep--"

"Like normal people."

"And I couldn't sleep. So I started scrolling."

"You realize that article is from October last year, right?"

There's a beat of silence before Buck answers. "Yes."

Eddie snorts, "Liar."

"I just thought it was funny!"

"I know," Eddie smiles into his pillow, "I love when you send me stupid stuff. I love when you share it with me."

"Oh." Buck goes silent again. "Y-you do?"

"Of course I do, Buck." Eddie would rolls his eyes but they're still closed, and the affect wouldn't be the same with Buck in LA and Eddie in El Paso.

He ignores that pang of hurt.

"Then I'll keep sending them."

"I look forward to what you find next."

"I should let you go back to sleep though..."

"No, I'm awake now. I'll keep you company until a call comes in or someone wakes up."

"Eddie..."

"Come on, Buck, tell me what else you found."

Eddie swears he can hear the smile in Buck's voice as he starts telling Eddie about another article he'd been reading.

In the dark of the room, Eddie can almost pretend he'd in the station with Buck.

Eddie and Chris are talking enough that Eddie knew it was missing in the first place

Proof of Eddie being able to provide what his parents can't

Further solidifies Buck's spot in the dynamic as Eddie's co-parent and that he can help Chris too
