On that note when therianthropy becomes about being a human roleplaying as an animal then a lot of folks start feeling a need to call themselves clinical lycanthropes and even psychotic delusional when they simply aren't. Just because they know they actually are the thing they identify as and it isn't a game. The same thing happened to fictionkin in the 2010s and we're now watching it happen to therians in real time.

While I'm not therian myself, I've been watching this unfold for a while. And for me, personally, I think the most frustrating thing is that many people have seen this coming for a while, but it's still be allowed to get to this point. I've seen multiple people ringing the alarm bells on this for years, and every time it got dismissed with things like "Let the kids have fun," or "Gatekeeping is wrong," without any consideration for how bad the problem could become.

Like you mentioned, the fictionkin community has already been through this, but the more significant example for me is the angelkin community. While the way in which things got watered down was different (ours was a flood of aesthetic posting and people treating "angelkin" and "angelcore" as the exact same thing), it still drowned out any attempts at asserting our definitions, and (combined with some other events around 2017) it absolutely destroyed the angelkin community, and we still haven't recovered. In many ways, the angelkin community is just gone.

(There have been some attempts at rebuilding the community, but it's still unclear if any of it will succeed or not. I'm not holding my breath.)

This kind of stuff is absolutely capable of wiping out a community if it isn't dealt with, and the time to start dealing with it was a few years ago. The therian community is large enough that they can probably weather through it, but as we've seen with the KFF problem, once it gets widespread enough, there really isn't a way to fully undo the damage. Hopefully the community will start taking steps to fix the problem before it gets worse, because it can get so, so much worse.

I've seen the same thing happen in the #faekin tag (though I think maybe not to the same degree, but then I have never followed #angelkin): a lot of stuff is also tagged #faecore and when that is the case, as far as I can tell the poster considers the two things to be equivalent to one another. Now, of course it is possible for someone who does actually consider themselves to be fae to simply enjoy posting aesthetics and whatnot; maybe they don't feel comfortable talking about nonhumanity/otherness here, or don't feel a need, or maybe they have a different blog for that where they don't tag the posts #faekin. But it sure feels like people posting #faecore saw others using #faekin in the same breath and so picked it up, which tends to dilute the meaning of the word.

I used to identify as ghostkin and saw our tags having the same problem. It held me back for way too long from being openly ghostkin because I felt being a ghost so seriously and intricately that the equivalency of the ghostkin label to ghostcore aesthetics drove me away. It turns out that my situation was something marginally closer to Cotard's than otherkinity, and I'm not even a ghost anymore at that, but even so, that is the problem a lot of real ghostkin and angelkin and faekin and techkin and dollkin and etc. etc. are facing.

I see therian spaces become focused on lifestyle and otherkin spaces become focused on aesthetics, with both circling back to the same problem: from an outside perspective (i.e., someone new to the community) neither allow space for people who identify seriously, so, those people try to find (pardon the pun) kinship elsewhere. Ergo, problem bleeds over to the clinical zoanthrope community.

Okay, but... genuine question. What do you think we ought to have done about it? How would you have dealt with it?

Correct the misinformation? The community does plenty of that.

Grumble about how "things were better back when I first joined the community"? We do that too, constantly.

Bar them from participating? That works if you're running an old-style forum, but the internet isn't structured like that these days. Anyone can use a tag and people are always going to tag things with whatever gets reach. (And it's pretty easy, at least on Tumblr, to just block anyone you don't want to see in the tags.)

Some kind of scorched-earth campaign against anyone wearing masks or doing quads or making moodboards? That would have just made the community utterly unpleasant.

The thing is, you'll never stop people from misinterpreting your words or tagging things poorly. And this really isn't a new problem, just one that social media has worsened the same way it's enshittified the internet in general. The community has always had people mistaking us for roleplayers. All you can do is keep spreading real information about what these things are.

This is what I eventually learned after a long, hard-fought battle to combat the misinformation about, and dilution of the meaning of, fictionkin in the 2010s.

In the end, you can't do anything except keep spreading and circulating the real information and meanings.

Hey, I recognize that you are a gimmick blog but you need to understand that otakukin/fictionkin already ARE their kintype. There is no 'transforming' into the character because that character already is you. That's literally what being fictionkin is.

Otakukin was in fact the original term for the community before "fictionkin" was coined!

The change happened on the livejournal community, where we discussed that the term "Otakukin" had negative (and overly specific) connotations that we wanted to avoid, ie, referring only to japanese media among other things.

So after some community discussion we (the group at the time) coined and started using fictionkin instead.

I don't use this blog all that much any more (I'm more active on a few others) but hello to the people who followed me/checked out my blog for the fictionkin/otakukin livejournal icons.

It's been 20 years. We've officially outlasted the trolls and haters who said it was a phase <3
