So I ofc adore all of the art and fics about Grocky exploring each other’s bodies in the name of science while road tripping to Erid. That said, one thing that’s always in the back of my mind is that Rocky is an engineer, not a scientist. I feel like while he is extremely curious, he’s more likely to want to know just enough to know how something works, and then once he's reached that point he wants to move onto something new. Adrian, however, I do hc as a scientist, specifically a biologist (specifically specifically an ecologist but still).

What I'm saying is that I think Rocky learned exactly enough about Grace’s digestive system to understand how to keep Grace healthy and not a whit more (ew eating gross gross gross) and then one day he walks into Grace’s house in the biodome and Adrian has their claws fully in Grace’s mouth

actually simon's willingness to be vulnerable in shocking, when you think of his backstory and his situation. i don't think it can all be chalked up to the intensity of what he's going through at the time. for example:

it's one thing to not be able to completely hide your emotions, but to express a need about them, and even to be in touch with oneself to this extent at all (rather than constant callousness and lashing out or total withdrawal, which are pretty typical in male characters especially), says a lot about the strength of his nature. that is, for someone to have a painful life where they aren't well-supported, the ability to still feel and express as deeply and vulnerably as this isn't easy to hold on to.

so in shipping terms, it makes the most sense to believe he would be totally aware of how he feels and both willing and able to openly discuss it, and have a warm attitude toward human connection, without denial or hostility toward (for example) grace.

tbh if you wanted to say one of them would be "better" at this kind of communication, i would pick simon for his emotional honesty.

grace can teach middle schoolers, but struggles to communicate or set boundaries with adults. he gives up or lashes out but doesn't take the risk or make the effort to reveal anything deeper about his feelings, if he doesn't think they will be "acceptable" to others.

simon doesn't hide his feelings to protect himself or to be polite, so everything he shows is just because that's how he really feels. and again and again in the film we see that how he really feels is empathy, compassion, as well as a sense of his own value as a person worthy of survival and respect just like everyone else.

grace is going to have to learn how to get in touch with his own feelings and lower his defenses for them to have good communication in their relationship.

When Simon arrives on the Hail Mary he brings a shit-ton of blood with him. Grace of course tries his best to clean it all up, but his first priority had been getting Simon to Armando for medical attention, and by the time he comes back to deal with it, some of the blood has seeped into the body of the ship where he can't reach it.

The blood is alive. It infects, mutates, and fundamentally changes whatever it comes into contact with, which includes the Hail Mary.

Shortly after Simon's arrival, the Hail Mary is alive too.

However, the key thing is this. The blood ocean was a malignant entity that thought it was helping humanity by absorbing them. The Hail Mary is genuinely helping humanity to find a solution for the astrophage crisis. Her purpose is to save humanity, to keep the humans aboard safe and alive so that they can fix the problem. So when she comes to life, that intent is going to carry over. Suddenly she has the capability, the capacity, and the desire to keep her crew safe.

Mary may be alive now, may be an honest to goodness artificial intelligence now. But unlike the blood ocean, she genuinely wants to do what's best for her passengers, which now include a rock spider and a very fucked up mutated human from another universe.

Just picture a sapient Hail Mary trying to do whatever she can to keep her new crew alive. Something breaks in the lab and starts emitting toxic fumes everywhere? She locks down the room until it can be safely vented. Unexpected asteroid in their path and no one is close enough to the controls to navigate them out of the way in time? She just does it herself. The more time passes, the more control she has over every part of her structure, to the point that maybe she's even able to repair parts of herself like a living thing heals from wounds so that Grace has less to worry about.

The cosmic horror leaked into the Hail Mary, but she just turns it into cosmic hope again.
