The French Republican Calendar was a calendar in use during the French Revolution in 1793 as part of a broader effort to replacing all religious and pre-revolutionary influences from all aspects of French society with "rational" replacements. It was dissolved by Napoleon in 1805, making it a short-lived and relatively forgettable part of history.

The calendar started on the autumnal equinox and consisted of 4 seasons, each with three months made of a french neologism that combined a word related to the season with a suffix for the season (e.g. all three months in Autumn ended with 'aire'). Each month had three 10 day weeks. Extra days that did not fit in the 365.24 day solar year were held in autumn, not belonging to any month.

To replace the Catholic Calendar of Saints, a calendar that named a Saint for every day of the year, which was popular in the countryside, the new Calendar named every day of the regular year after far more "rational" plants, animals, minerals, and tools. The day of the Chestnut was the 3rd day of Vendémiaire (the 24th of September).

Hours, minutes, and seconds were also decimalized, but this was very unpopular. (10 hours to a day, 10 minutes to an hour, 10 seconds to a minute).

The French Republican calendar persists in a few small ways: many events during the French Revolution are still labeled with the date in the Republican calendar. For example, the "Thermidorian Reaction" is used to describe the expulsion of Maximilian Robespierre, which occurred during the month of Thermidor. Thermidor in general is sometimes used to refer to a counter-revolutionary, reactionary push back. Similarly, the rise of Napoleon is known as the Coup of 18 Brumaire.

Other French Revolutionary rationalization efforts, like the metric system, were far more successful at proliferating.

The problem with studying the deep ocean is that humans need light to look at things, the depths of the ocean are extremely dark, and what lives there is accustomed to spending most of its time in that darkness. So when we go down there with submersibles and turn on Big Lights to see, we invariably and dramatically alter what's going on, in the same way that it's generally difficult to observe the natural behaviors of terrestrial animals if you whip out a megaphone and shout HEY GUYS WHAT ARE YOU DOING at them first.

I put this in the comments but feel it needs a reblog- Check out some of Dr Edith Widder’s work on light in the deep sea! Among other things, she used the bioluminescence of stoplight fish to deduce wavelengths which most deep sea animals can’t perceive and used that to create light filters to be able to film with minimal disturbance! And that’s how we got 25 minutes of giant squid footage!!!!

If I had to take a guess you were searching for Bathyspheria, a deep sea dragon fish seen only on the first bathysphere dive thought to be around six feet long on observation but never seen since. The timeline doesn’t fit as that was 1932 but in terms of everything else it would make sense.
