one of the most tedious panels i’ve coloured so far. way too many individual parts.

the only consolation was that i also got to spend all that time watching porco’s hubris get wrecked by the SC

the two that gave reiner and zeke PTSD

thought i should finally finish this ackerman colouration in time for levi’s birthday.

the right panel was a pain to colour because the manga base just didn’t seem suited for colouring because there was too much white space.

also, isayama’s shading usually helps a lot in the colouring but for some reason the lighting did not translate well into colour. 

ended up having to re-shade and re-light everything in colour which was tough. hopefully it works!

this was the panel that first made me think, “wow isayama can sure draw”. 

look at grisha’s luscious locks. 

been sitting on this panel for awhile because i couldn’t think of a way to colour freida’s transformation smoke in the interesting manner. 

tried going for the anime’s green-orange transformation colour palette but eventually settled on a technicolour palette for the smoke and freida’s eyes because PATHS.

by that i mean the colourful threads the anime uses to animate eren’s insta-regeneration.

reiner, get out bertholdt, got you annie, fall

each time RBA is defeated by the SC, an execution catchphrase is uttered right before the finishing blow.

“reiner, get out” has got to be my favourite. 

it perfectly encapsulates the catharsis of blasting the armoured titan right out of his nape. 

however, after chapter 97 of the reiner arc, him taking a projectile through the mouth has a new dark and depressing meaning. this panel is no longer as cathartic as it once was anymore...

isayama has always done a good job at creating this sense of insurmountability of the SC defeating the titans. prior to this chapter, i could never imagine how the SC would eventually, not only take down but, take the power of, the colossal titan - i.e. the face of the antagonists of the series, the god of destruction. 

hence, this scene was super satisfying and feels very well-earned. 

i loved how this scene paralleled the earlier scene where eren first faces the colossal titan,

i also think it’s cool that the colossal is taken down by the 3DMG instead of eren’s titan form - very david/goliath-esque

while it was super gratifying watching bert get dragged out like that when this chapter first came out, after reading the marley arc, i can’t help but feel a sense of despair when revisiting this scene.

eren and bert could have been friends if they had been born in a different world. they could have grown old together, retired together and have had drinks with one another. 

but because of the cruel reality of the world they were brought into, they were destined to hate and kill one another. kinda sad really and props to isayama for portraying such complexity in the core battle between the series’ main protagonist and antagonist.

don’t ever challenge the beast titan, unless you’re levi ackerman

this was another epic panel. after almost an entire chapter of dialogue, we are suddenly thrown this double-page panel of the aftermath the armoured vs the beast titan.

it was frankly shocking to see reiner’s armour smashed into smithereens like that. the way that the cracks radiate outwards suggests that it was caused by the mere punch of the beast titan.

in just one panel, it immediately established how deadly and powerful the beast is. 

it also foreshadows its rock-crushing strength later displayed in the return arc.

sorry annie but you’re gonna have to wait...

coloured one of my favourite panels and best title-drop ever - shingeki no kyojin.

everything about this name-drop is so well done. the overlay of kruger’s exposition of the freedom-seeking nature of the attack titan and the wings of freedom of the survey corp highlights the parallel between the advancing nature of both the attack titan and the SC.

shadis’ cloak is so well-illustrated and the sun glint streaming from across his shoulder creates this great sense of wonder and hope, as seen by that look of awe (and relief?) in grisha’s eyes.

and of course, the revelation that the title of the series was referring to eren (or at least the attack titan) all along...
